On 8 March 2017, the Academic Senate of Comenius University in Bratislava approved a proposal submitted by Comenius University Rector, Professor Karol Mičieta, to appoint Associate Professor Marek Števček to the position of Comenius University Vice-Rector for Legislation for a term commencing on 1 April 2017. The senate also approved the rector’s proposal that Associate Professor Vincent Múcska be appointed to the position of Vice-Rector for Development for a term effective from 1 May 2017. Associate Professor Múcska, who is from the Faculty of Arts, will take on the role of Vice-Rector for Development for a second term.

Associate Professor Marek Števček was born on 20 February 1976 in Bratislava. After completing studies at the Faculty of Law at Comenius University in 1999, he commenced work at the faculty’s Department of Civil Law, where he has been to the present day. In addition, he has worked at the Department of Civil Law at Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica and at the Institute of State and Law of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava, where he was a researcher. He has also lectured on civil procedural law at the Faculty of Law at Palacký University in Olomouc. He undertook his internal research assistantship in the field of civil law in 2006 and in 2012 he habilitated as an Associate Professor of Civil Law. From 2012 to 2015 he was the chairman of the Recodification Commission for Civil Procedural Law. After the completion of the recodification process, Števček was then appointed by the Minister of Justice to the position of chairman of the Commission for the Recodification of Private Law on 1 July 2015; the commission’s primary role was to prepare a proposal for a new Slovak Civil Code. Števček’s scientific and publishing activities focus on a wide range of issues present in civil law. He has published dozens of professional and research papers both domestically as well as abroad in periodical literature and in book form. Števček has also participated in many scientific conferences in Slovakia as well as abroad. He has been the co-author of several monographs and textbooks on civil substantive and procedural law, family law, and international procedural law, and has contributed to the Encyclopaedia Beliana. He is a member of the Educational College of the Slovak Bar Association and is on the editorial board of several professional journals.

Associate Professor Števček replaces Professor Mária Patayková in the role of Vice-Rector for Legislation because Patayková was elected to the position of Public Defender of Rights.
