FMPI CU researchers speed up AI and make history

Researchers at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics at Comenius University (FMPI CU)...

Large language models, including those behind familiar chatbots, have enormous potential. Running them, however, requires vast amounts of computing power and memory. “An LLM is essentially a computation that can be described using a large set of numbers – tens to hundreds of billions of them – which we call weights. Storing these weights is a major challenge,” explains Associate Professor Vladimír Boža of the faculty’s Department of Computer Science.
The most common way to reduce the size of these models, he explains, is to lower the precision of the numbers, a technique known as quantisation. Another approach is pruning: setting unnecessary connections in the network to zero to produce a leaner, “sparse” network. Until now, however, this approach has faced a fundamental obstacle.
“While sparsity looked great in theory, it often failed to deliver in practice on modern graphics processing units (GPUs), because the hardware is designed for large-scale computations with a predictable structure,” explains Vladimír Boža. As a result, even removing half the numbers from a model made little difference to processing times on standard hardware.
The researchers have now overcome this hardware obstacle. Their new method, MACKO-SpMV, combines an efficient way of storing data with algorithms specifically optimised for GPUs. “MACKO-SpMV allows sparse models to run quickly on modern hardware, making them a practical alternative rather than just a theoretical dream,” says Vladimír Boža. At 50 per cent sparsity, the team achieved processing speeds 1.2 to 1.5 times as high while halving memory use: all without the need to buy specialised hardware.
A historic achievement for Slovak AI research
The significance of the breakthrough was recognised when the team’s paper was accepted at the International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML) in Seoul, South Korea. Alongside NeurIPS and ICLR, ICML is one of the world’s three most prestigious AI research conferences. The CU researchers’ paper was selected for a Spotlight presentation, a distinction reserved for roughly the top 3–5 per cent of the thousands of submissions received from around the world.
This marks a major milestone for Slovak science: the first time a research team from a Slovak institution has received Spotlight recognition at ICML. The software library developed by the team is freely available as open-source software, and its practical value has also been recognised by technology giant NVIDIA, which featured it on its official developer blog. The research was supported by grants APVV-24-0045, VEGA-1/0140/2 and VEGA-1/0538/2. The authors also thank the administrators of the Devana and Leonardo high-performance computing clusters for providing computing resources.

Faculty of Law, Comenius University launches unique joint programme "Law and International Law" with Uzhhorod University

Faculty of Law, Comenius University Bratislava, 27 August 2026

The Faculty of Law of Comenius University Bratislava and the Faculty of Law of Uzhhorod National University are opening a joint bachelor's double-degree programme, "Law and International Law", taught in English, in the 2026/2027 academic year. It is the first joint cross-border training of lawyers in the history of Slovak–Ukrainian academic relations, accredited in line with the requirements of both the Slovak Republic and the European Union.
The programme combines a classical legal education with an international dimension and is intended for students who wish to complete a university degree in English, as well as for international applicants. Graduates receive a single bachelor's (Bc.) diploma issued jointly by both universities, simultaneously in two specialisations — 30. Law (under the legislation of the Slovak Republic) and D9 International Law (under the legislation of Ukraine). The diploma is recognised across the European education area under the Lisbon Recognition Convention and the Bologna Process.
Study in two countries
The programme lasts four years in full-time form. The first and fourth years take place at the Faculty of Law of Uzhhorod National University, the second and third years at the Faculty of Law of Comenius University Bratislava. Students thus gain genuine international experience and full integration into the European academic environment. The status of a regular European student also brings practical advantages — a legal basis for a residence permit in Slovakia, mobility within the Schengen area, and access to European educational infrastructure.
Focus and career prospects
The programme centres on European Union law, public and private international law, comparative law, international trade, human rights protection, international arbitration, and the legal aspects of digitalisation. Graduates find positions in international and intergovernmental organisations, EU institutions, law firms and consultancies, public administration bodies and multinational corporations, or may continue to master's studies in law and related fields.
Admissions, tuition and deadline
Tuition is €2,000 per academic year. The admissions procedure consists of an academic component (a minimum of 150 out of 200 points) and a language component, which can be demonstrated by an international certificate at B2 level, by the result of the school-leaving (maturita) examination in English, or by an online test on the Moodle platform; citizens of Ukraine take the National Multi-Subject Test (NMT). The application deadline is 14 September 2026.

What to do if you were not allocated dormitory accommodation?

The regular phase of the accommodation process has ended and most available beds at Comenius...

The regular phase of the accommodation process has ended and most available beds at Comenius University dormitories have already been allocated. For students who were not allocated accommodation, as well as mobility students arriving in Bratislava for whom dormitory accommodation is currently unavailable, we have prepared several tips that may help when looking for accommodation in Bratislava.
1. Submit an additional accommodation application
CU students who were not allocated a bed during the regular accommodation process are advised to submit an additional accommodation application.
The application form is available from 19 August 2026. Additional applications will be processed approximately from the end of August and throughout September, depending on the availability of beds.
Submitting an additional application does not automatically guarantee accommodation. It is therefore advisable not to rely on this option alone and to explore other accommodation possibilities at the same time, particularly if accommodation is needed as soon as possible.
Students from universities other than CU may also submit an additional application. However, CU students will be given priority in the allocation process, which means that accommodation for non-CU students may only become available later during the winter semester.
Students coming to CU as part of a mobility programme do not submit an additional application. In such cases, please follow the information available on
.
All information about additional applications is available on the websites of <link https://mlyny.uniba.sk/en/detail-of-news/back_to_page/vysokoskolske-mesto-l-stura-mlyny-uk/article/dodatocna-ziadost-o-ubytovanie-5/ _blank>CU Mlyny
and
.
2. Where to start looking?
Accommodation offers in Bratislava can be found through a number of different channels. It is best to combine several ways of searching rather than relying on a single source.
Useful places to check include:

websites offering rental properties and shared accommodation,

social media groups focused on flats, rooms and shared accommodation in Bratislava,

student and faculty groups,

listings for individual rooms in shared flats,

short-term accommodation options for the first few days or weeks of the semester.

For those looking for a more affordable option, renting an entire flat is not the only possibility. Renting a single room in a shared flat or finding flatmates and looking for a flat together may be more affordable.
3. Do not look only at the advertised price
When comparing offers, always check what exactly is included in the stated price.
Before making a decision, it is worth checking in particular:

Is the price per person, per room or for the entire flat?

Are utilities included? Is internet included? Are there any other fees associated with the rental?

Is a deposit required and, if so, how much?

For what period is the contract concluded? If additional dormitory accommodation is allocated later, when and under what conditions can the contract be terminated?

Is the room or flat furnished?

How many people will live in the flat and which areas will be shared?

An offer with a lower monthly rent may not ultimately be the cheapest option if additional regular charges are added.
4. If Bratislava is unfamiliar, check the location before booking
When looking for accommodation in an unfamiliar city, it is better not to focus only on the name of the district, the distance from the city centre or the number of kilometres.
First, check where the relevant faculty is located and where most classes will take place. Comenius University facilities are located across several parts of Bratislava, and some study programmes may require travel between several university buildings.
For each accommodation offer, it is therefore useful to check the exact address and, in particular:

how long the journey to the faculty will take,

where the nearest public transport stop is,

whether transfers will be necessary,

what public transport connections are available early in the morning and in the evening,

the availability of grocery stores and basic services,

connections to the railway or bus station, particularly for those planning to travel home regularly.

Accommodation farther from the city centre can sometimes be more practical than a flat that appears closer on the map but requires a more complicated journey or several transfers. For long-term accommodation, good public transport connections may therefore be more important than the distance in kilometres.
Connections can be checked using the IDS BK journey planner or public transport timetables.
5. Be cautious with offers from private individuals
Demand for rental accommodation is particularly high at the beginning of the academic year. Pressure to make a quick decision, however, is not a reason to send money without knowing exactly what the payment is for.
Before paying a deposit or the first month’s rent, check the basic information about the offer, the rental conditions and the person offering the accommodation. Whenever possible, view the flat or room in person before making a payment.
For students arriving from abroad who are unable to attend an in-person viewing, it is advisable to request at least a video call or a current video tour of the accommodation and to have all conditions confirmed in writing.
Particular caution is recommended with offers that are significantly cheaper than comparable accommodation or require an immediate payment without providing a reasonable opportunity to verify the accommodation first.
6. No long-term accommodation yet? Consider a temporary solution
If suitable long-term accommodation cannot be found before arriving in Bratislava, it may be more practical to arrange short-term accommodation for the first few days or weeks and continue looking for a long-term rental after arrival. While demand is very high in August, the situation often becomes calmer later in the autumn and more favourable accommodation offers may become available. At the same time, vacancies may gradually become available at CU dormitories as well.
This also makes it possible to view accommodation offers in person, become more familiar with Bratislava and better assess which location is most convenient in terms of the university and daily travel.
The search for long-term accommodation can also continue while waiting for the result of an additional application for CU dormitory accommodation.
