Preventing neurodegeneration through science, nutrition and movement

As populations continue to age, neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s are becoming an increasingly pressing challenge. Researchers from the Faculty of Medicine of CU and University of Vienna have therefore joined forces in a new cross-border initiative called Brainhealth. Their aim is to show that healthy nutrition and regular physical activity are not just lifestyle choices, but scientifically proven tools for protecting brain health.

Alongside ageing itself, the rising incidence of these conditions is linked to chronic diseases, environmental toxins and modern lifestyle factors such as sedentary behaviour, long-term stress and poor dietary habits. Although older adults remain the most affected group, neurodegenerative disorders are increasingly impacting younger generations as well.

Brainhealth builds on the earlier Nutriaging project. “Our project focuses on preventing neurodegenerative diseases through a combination of proper nutrition, regular exercise and early diagnosis. We aim to improve the quality of life of older adults while reducing the risks associated with ageing,” explains Jana Muchová, Head of the Department of Medical Chemistry, Biochemistry and Clinical Biochemistry at FMED CU and the Slovak lead investigator for the project.

The research team plans to carry out a human intervention study alongside experiments using animal models and central nervous system cells. The project also includes the creation of a specialised laboratory dedicated to identifying early biomarkers of neurodegenerative diseases. Another objective is to map the occurrence of neurodegenerative and mental health disorders in the Slovak-Austrian border region and develop recommendations for preventive strategies.

The project is led by Karl-Heinz Wagner from the University of Vienna. The FMED CU team is headed by Jana Muchová, who is working on the project together with Deputy Head Ingrid Žitňanová and project manager Zdeňka Ďuračková.
