Seminar of Graph Theory - Martin Škoviera (17.3.2022)

Thursday 17.3.2022 at 9:50, Lecture room M/213

Martin Škoviera:
Cyclic connectivity, edge-elimination, the twisted Isaacs graphs, and beyond

Abstract:
Edge-elimination is an operation of removing an edge together with its end-vertices. We study the effect of this operation on the cyclic connectivity of a cubic graph. Disregarding a small number of cubic graphs with no more than six vertices, this operation cannot decrease cyclic connectivity by more than two. We show that apart from three exceptional graphs (the cube, the twisted cube, and the Petersen graph) every 2-connected cubic graph on at least eight vertices contains an edge whose elimination decreases cyclic connectivity by at most one. A substantial ingredient of the proof is a theorem that provides a structural characterisation of Isaacs flower snarks and their natural generalisation, twisted Isaacs graphs.
We explain how the result is related to several other problems concerning cubic graphs, for example, the existence of long cycles, decycling, and maximum genus embeddings of cubic graphs into surfaces. This is a joint work with Roman Nedela.

St. George’s Rotunda in Nitrianska Blatnica

International consortium of radiocarbon laboratories dated St. George’s Rotunda in Nitrianska...

Radiocarbon laboratory of the Department of Nuclear Physics and Biophysics (DNPB) of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics of the Comenius University determined that the St. George’s Rotunda in Nitrianska Blatnica was probably built in the years 830 ± 30 AD, i. e., the Rotunda could have been constructed before the arrival of Constantine (St. Cyril) and St. Methodius to Great Moravia (< 863 AD). As archeological investigations indicated that the Rotunda could have been constructed later, and also because this result attracted international interest, an international consortium of radiocarbon laboratories from USA (University of Arizona in Tucson, and University of Georgia in Athens), Switzerland (ETH, Zurich), as well as from neighboring countries (to contradict possible doubts) – from Austria (University of Vienna), from Czechia (Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague), from Hungary (Institute for Nuclear Research of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Debrecen), and also from DNPB. The objective of the international consortium was to verify the age of the Rotunda by analyzing all samples which were found during its recent restauration. As the Rotunda was during its long history several times seriously damaged, and therefore repeatedly reconstructed, its present Baroque look did not suggest that it could be an old stone building.
Radiocarbon analysis of 20 samples collected from the Rotunda walls (wood, charcoal, mortar and plaster) showed good agreement between laboratories analyzing the same as well different samples. Elaboration of results (using the newest radiocarbon calibration curve) showed that the consortium results have been consistent with the previous DNPB results. The obtained age of the Rotunda suggests that it is probably the oldest standing sacral building not only on the territory of Slovakia, but also in the eastern part of the Central Europe (east of Salzburg).
This discovery suggests that Christianity on the territory of Slovakia (more precisely in the Nitra principality) was already spread during the reigning of Prince Pribina.

Message from Rector and Student Section of Senate to students from Ukraine and Russia

The Rector and the leadership of the Student Section of the Academic Senate of Comenius University...

Immediately after the military conflict broke out on 24 February 2022, the Rector of Comenius University addressed the following letter to the Ukrainian students of our university:
Dear students,
allow me to express my deepest sympathy and solidarity with you at this time which is so difficult for your homeland. We are on your side and as your university we want to assist you by concrete measures rather than just gestures and declarations. I would like to inform you that I have taken immediate steps towards identifying specific problem areas and drafting effective solutions. I am convening the first crisis meeting today at 2 p.m. and we will keep you continuously informed of the measures we adopt.
We will welcome any help and active participation from you. Please, let us know how your university can assist you. We will appreciate your participation in determining what assistance we should provide to yourselves, your relatives and your entire country facing this difficult situation.
Let me assure you that our university will leverage its entire reputation and social status to stand up for you and help you.
Yours respectfully, Marek Števček, Rector of Comenius University

The Rector of Comenius University also addressed the following message to the students from the Russian Federation in order to assure them that we were also prepared to assist them:
Dear students,
I address you, because I am aware of the complexity of the situation in which you now find yourself as students from Russia. I want to offer my full assurance that your university and me personally understand your difficult situation, which arose through no fault of yours.
The worst about any military conflict is the suffering of the innocent, often on several sides. For many of you, life has become more difficult. You may be facing traumatising confrontations and perceive negative reactions to the policies of your country's political leaders. Please do not hesitate to contact your faculties or the Rector's Office directly if the situation becomes too difficult for you and you need assistance. This could range from the provision of the essentials of living, the need for psychological counselling, administrative assistance in complicated daily interactions, or any other kind of support.
I wish you all a lot of strength and determination in these difficult times and would like to express the belief that the tension will de-escalate soon.
Yours respectfully, Marek Števček, Rector of Comenius University

The Rector also expressed his approval with the letter of the Student Vice-Presidents of the Academic Senate of Comenius University who call on the students to show mutual empathy and humanity:
Dear colleagues,
our country and our university find themselves in direct proximity to a military conflict not seen in Europe since World War II. After months of pandemic, our resolve to uphold human dignity will be tested again.
Comenius University Bratislava has already formulated its response to the events unfolding in Ukraine and is doing its utmost to help university students and staff affected by the conflict.
.
During wars, the worst human qualities always come to the surface. Let us make sure we do not insert this conflict into our academic environment, because nothing good would come of it. The most important thing today is for us, students, to stick together and lend a helping hand to each other. It doesn't matter where we come from or what language we speak, because we are united by our studies at Comenius University Bratislava. It has always been a beacon of humanity, and has stood firmly on the side of truth and freedom at every turning point in history.
I call on all of you to ask your colleagues and friends how they feel and whether they need help. The war in Ukraine may not affect you directly, but it may have some indirect impact on your life nevertheless. You can be assured that Comenius University Bratislava and your student representatives in the academic senates of faculties and of the university are here for you. Do not hesitate to contact us and follow communication channels of your faculty and the university.
I call on you to help students from Ukraine, but in the same way I ask you to refrain from expressing negative attitudes towards students from the Russian Federation. Even we, Slovaks, do not always agree with the decisions of our political leaders. The days, weeks and months to come will be difficult for us all. None of us can be blamed for the military aggression, but we all will face the consequences of the ensuing humanitarian crisis. We need to stick together, even though it won’t be easy.
Respectfully,
Matej Gajdoš, Vice-President of the Academic Senate of Comenius University,
mobile: 0911 808 414,
e-mail: gajdos96@uniba.sk

The Rector of Comenius University and the leadership of the Student Section of the Academic Senate of Comenius University reiterate their determination to help our students from Ukraine, the Russian Federation and any other countries, for whom life has become difficult. We call on the whole academic community to stand united and deal with the consequences of the war.
