Dean's Opening Speech for the 2024/2025 Academic Year at JFMED CU

Read the speech delivered by Prof. Andrea Čalkovská, Dean of the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine,...

Dear colleagues, esteemed students, and honored guests,
Thank you for the kind and encouraging words about our faculty. Let us take a moment to reflect on where we have been and where we are headed. Last autumn (2023), we welcomed a team from the Slovak Accreditation Agency and successfully accredited our study programs, while also aligning our disciplines for habilitation and inauguration procedures. We continue progressing under new standards.
The evaluation procedures and standards for Slovak medical faculties were recently officially recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME), and it was at our faculty that the Slovak Accreditation Agency’s work was assessed. This recognition strengthens our international reputation and enhances our competitiveness in the global academic market. The degrees earned by our students are now internationally comparable and accepted by the global medical community.
We’ve also completed major projects funded by the EU’s structural and investment funds, including the first phase of the Biobank, which was finalized in April. We are working diligently to ensure this unique facility reaches its full potential. Since February, the land designated for the new hospital has no longer been owned by the university or faculty, allowing preparations for its construction to proceed without delay, as demonstrated by the ongoing activity on-site.
We also participated successfully in project calls under the Recovery and Resilience Plan, securing grants for eight projects through the Scholarships for Researchers initiative (R2-R4). In addition, our faculty members continue advancing their qualifications, with five habilitations and four inaugurations completed in 2024. We are currently accrediting further education programs, with 50 programs now offered and 1,106 healthcare professionals and 60 residents enrolled.
In preparation for the next cycle of scientific evaluation, VER2026, we are adapting our incentive tools to encourage publications that contribute to this process, in line with evolving science evaluation systems.
On the first day of the semester, I was reminded, as I have been many times before, of how empty the faculty feels during the summer. On September 16, the campus was once again filled with smiling students, gathered in groups, with backpacks on their shoulders. I warmly welcome all of you—students of General Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Midwifery, Public Health, PhD candidates, and especially our first-year students. We innovate and modernize for your benefit: from pre-state exam internships in your home regions to curriculum updates with a stronger focus on clinical subjects and the renovation of the Medical Education Support Center (our simulation center), which gained three new rooms over the summer. At the end of September, we will also participate in a major call from the Ministry of Education for simulation-based teaching, in partnership with University Hospital Martin, to further integrate this training with clinical practice.
Now, let’s take a brief look back. Imagine a scene similar to today—students, staff, and guests gathered to start the academic year, though perhaps on a smaller scale—in 1969. On July 21, 55 years ago, our faculty became independent. During a thorough cleanup of our archives, we discovered what I would call a treasure: a leather-bound commemorative book from the student dormitory of Comenius University’s Medical Faculty in Martin. On its first page, handwritten, it reads: “When the medical faculty in Martin was founded, much good was done, but also some bad. To those who come after us: Forget the bad, but ensure that your contemporaries and future generations are reminded of the good.” It is signed by J. Kukura on November 28, 1969. He knew what he was talking about—Prof. Jozef Kukura, MD. was the chairman of the committee for building the medical faculty in Martin. His determination and dedication to this effort were legendary. He later became dean of the medical faculty in Bratislava and wrote these words during a visit to Martin.
I believe this says it all. Those who experienced that time, and those who have studied the faculty’s history, know it was a challenging period. This is why we must learn from history—focusing not on what divides us, but on what unites us.
Since relationships are delicate, we greatly value and appreciate them. We owe special thanks to the city of Martin, whose support has been crucial. Just yesterday, Mayor Ján Danko was awarded the Comenius University Grand Gold Medal by Rector Marek Števček in recognition of this strong partnership. I would also like to thank University Hospital Martin, our main teaching base and research partner.
We have an eventful academic year ahead. In closing, I wish that, together, we continue building lasting values that will support us through both good times and challenges.

CU RESEARCHER RECEIVES THE PRESTIGIOUS IUGS AWARD

Bratislava, 25 September, 2022: Associate Professor Michal Šujan from the Faculty of Natural...

Michal Šujan works at the Department of Geology and Palaeontology of the CU FNS and is a renowned European expert on rock sedimentation processes and the use of cosmogenic nuclides for dating in geology (geochronology). Cosmogenic nuclides are isotopes of elements like beryllium or aluminium, which arise through nuclear reactions in rocks and in the atmosphere, as a result of interaction of particles with cosmic radiation.
The award-winning geologist leads a team of 24 researchers and students, which is the worldwide leader in authigenic 10Be/9Be dating, and collaborates with experts across Europe. The authigenic phase analysed in this dating method consists of a layer of minerals precipitated on the surface of sediment grains when they are transported by water flowing in a river. This new method makes it possible to determine the date of deposition of the ubiquitous clay sediments, something that could not be done before. Michal Šujan established a lab at CU to process samples of cosmogenic nuclides.
"I am very grateful to all my mentors who guided me on this journey, mainly Professor Michal Kováč from Bratislava and Dr. Régis Braucher from Aix-en-Provence in France. The research I did would not be possible without the team of my CU colleagues who taught and supported me. This award is a significant recognition of their work and they have a share in it," said the researcher Michal Šujan.
The nomination for the award was presented to the IUGS executive by the National Geological Committee of the Slovak Republic, which is currently led by the Vice-Dean of the FNS Marianna Kováčová. "In sports terminology, the award given to Assistant Professor Šujan can easily be compared to an Olympic gold medal in one of the team sports. It is a huge success and a confirmation of the high quality of geoscience education at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University, and of the international impact of the laureate's research," added Associate Professor Kováčová.
The International Union of Geological Sciences
was founded in 1961 in Paris and is one of the largest and most active non-governmental scientific organizations in the world. IUGS promotes the study of global geological issues and facilitates international and interdisciplinary collaboration among geoscientists.

The IUGS Early Career Scientist Medal is an award given by the union once every four years to a young researcher who has achieved exceptional results in original geology research. The laureate is chosen by the IUGS Executive Committee which includes representatives of national geology organizations from 121 countries, among them the Slovak Republic, and represents over a million geoscientists.

Ceremonial Opening of the 2024/2025 Academic Year

On Tuesday, September 24, the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University in Bratislava,...

A total of 1,750 students enrolled in medical and non-medical programs at JFMED CU for this academic year. As part of its commitment to admitting more medical students, 149 students were accepted into the first year of the Slovak-language General Medicine program, up from 118 in the previous year.
In July, the faculty celebrated its 55th anniversary of independence, which was also referenced by Dean Prof. Andrea Čalkovská, MD, DSc., in her opening speech. She noted, “We discovered a real treasure in our archives—a leather-bound commemorative book from the university dormitory, containing a handwritten account from the time the faculty was founded. It mentions the complexity of the process, but emphasizes that future generations should remember the good things. This is a message we aim to continue developing.”
The dean also highlighted several ongoing projects, including grants from the Recovery and Resilience Plan for top researchers. “We are currently awaiting a call for proposals from the Ministry of Education, which will allocate significant funds for simulation-based teaching. This summer, using our own resources, we renovated our simulation center, adding three new rooms to improve the quality of instruction. We plan to collaborate with University Hospital Martin to establish a simulation center within the hospital through this new funding,” added Prof. Čalkovská.
The ceremony also featured the presentation of academic commendations to students and commemorative medals to current and former staff members of the faculty.

COMENIUS UNIVERSITY OPENS ITS 106TH ACADEMIC YEAR

Bratislava, 23 September 2024: The oldest university in Slovakia begins its 106th academic year. On...

At the opening ceremony of the academic year which took place in the Auditorium of Comenius University, the rector of the University Marek Števček awarded medals to personalities who made an extraordinary contribution to the development of both Comenius University and the society in Slovakia as a whole. Gold Medals were awarded to Professor Ján Danko for promoting the principle of self-government in the management of public affairs and for his unceasing support of the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in Martin, and to Associate Professor Daniel Böhmer for his long-term leadership of supreme bodies of self-government at the Faculty of Medicine of CU, as well as for his personal contribution to the fight for academic rights and freedoms. Ing. Róbert Šimončič was awarded a silver medal for his years of active membership on the General Board of Comenius University and for raising public awareness of the university.
In his speech, the rector drew a parallel with the recent floods and with the solidarity and selfless help shown by people of various social backgrounds, of different world-views and political preferences, who quickly formed a solid community. He also emphasized the need to build metaphorical bridges between different opinion groups. "Such a formative experience brings to the surface the most beautiful of humanity. It is something we absolutely need today! Here I see a parallel with us, with the academic community. We don't need apocalyptic experiences to know what unites us. Collegiality, cohesion, friendship... In my opinion, communities need to prove that the diseases of the society are treatable. The role of communities like ours is to provide positive examples of communication bridges. Decency, truthfulness, respect for the dignity of someone with a different opinion, preferring arguments over dehumanisation in a discourse, those are our tasks. Cultured social discourse can be a formative experience because there is a dire lack of it. Let our community prove that we can do it." The solemnity of the occasion was enhanced towards the end by the musical performance of Vocalatté, a vocal-instrumental group.
So far, 21,500 people have registered to study at Comenius University in 2024/2025, over 3,500 of whom are from abroad. Enrolment is still ongoing and the figures are not yet final. Final figures will be published at the end of October. In the 2024/2025 winter semester nearly 467 Erasmus+ students and other international students from 34 countries will study at our university. Most of them will be from Spain, France Italy, Portugal, and Germany.

Comenius University Bratislava is the oldest and largest university in Slovakia and offers education at all levels of study (bachelor, master, doctoral and PhD studies) in 750 study programmes at thirteen faculties, located in three cities (Bratislava, Martin, Nitra).

OUR STUDENTS BRING THREE SILVER AND A BRONZE FROM BRNO!

ON 19 SEPTEMBER 2024, MASARYK UNIVERSITY IN BRNO

At the Faculty of Law of Masaryk University in Brno yesterday (19. 9 2024) the Czech-Slovak round of the ŠVOČ (Student Scientific Professional Activity) took place, where we were represented by 11 students (Adam Briešt'anský, Lýdia Jakubjaková, Emma Humeňanská, Karolína Ozimyová, Daniel Richter, Dominika Krištofičová, Michael Kunst, Barbora Bodíková, Dávid Školník, Vivienn Üvegesová and Mária Krakovská), three of them online, and 7 teachers as members of the committees (prof. Ján Svák, doc. Marek Kordík, Ing. Albert Priehoda, Dr. Renáta Kišoňová, Dr. Sandra Meňhartová, Dr. Kristína Slámková and prof. Ján Škrobák).
Four "medals" from the competition, where students from eight Czech and Slovak law faculties presented their work in eight sections, made this year's edition of the Czech-Slovak round probably the most successful since the restoration of the "ŠVOČ".
The award winners were:
ADAM BRIEŠŤANSKÝ - 2nd place in the section Theory of Law, Constitutional Law, Human Rights (thesis topic Human Rights Aspects of Punishing Extremist Symbolism, consultant prof. Prof. Tomáš Ľalík)
Bc. DANIEL RICHTER - 2nd place in the section Criminal Law (thesis topic: Effectiveness of the ultima ratio principle in relation to the principle of proportionality, consultant prof. Eduard Burda)
Bc. BARBORA BODÍKOVÁ - 2nd place in the section Administrative Law, Financial Law, Social Security Law and Environmental Law (thesis topic: Appropriateness of the age limit of liability for administrative offences and criminal liability, consultant: Dr. Mária Havelková)
KAROLÍNA OZIMYOVÁ - 3rd place in the section Theory of Law, Constitutional Law, Human Rights (thesis topic World Cup, Qatar 2022: the visibility of Qatar in the football world or well-planned sportswashing?, consultant prof. Tomáš Ľalík).
CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT REPRESENTATION! We are pleased that although the core of our representatives were current fifth year students, two of the awards were won by colleagues from the Bachelor's study programme, and that also creates the promise of continuity in future years.
Thank you to our other young scientists, you were all excellent!
Of course, we also thank the consultants; and we thank our friends from the Faculty of Law of Masaryk University in Brno for their excellent handling of organizing such a big event in a hybrid format during the flood situation, when their university was forced to postpone the start of the semester.
If you consider taking part in the Student Scientific Professional Activity Competition this year, you will find it interesting to know that next year the Czech-Slovak round will be held in Moravia again, but this time a little further to the north - at the Faculty of Law of Palacký University in Olomouc. Take part in the ŠVOC, we are looking forward to it!

Bratislava Legal Forum 2024

Bratislava, 17. september 2024

The jubilee 10th year of the international scientific conference "Bratislava Legal Forum 2024" was traditionally opened in the premises of the Faculty of Law of Comenius University in Bratislava (PraF UK) on Tuesday, 17 September 2024, with the plenary session of the conference with the primary topic: '"The Impact of European Law on National Legal Systems". Distinguished guests such as V4 Ministers of Justice, V4 Presidents of Supreme Courts and V4 Presidents of Bar Associations were invited to the plenary session.
In his opening speech, the Rector of Comenius University Marek Števček drew attention to the fact that in addition to climate change, we are also experiencing a change in the social climate, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic Juraj Blanár appreciated the organisation of the conference. In conclusion, Minister Blanár expressed his wish that the Bratislava Legal Forum would become a legal conference of pan-European format. The attention was then turned to the opening ministerial panel of the conference, moderated by Dean Burda, whose guests were the Ministers of Justice of the Slovak Republic, Boris Susko, and Hungary, BenceTuzson, Deputy Minister of Justice of the Czech Republic, Vilém Anzenbacher, and Zuzanna Rudzińska-Bluszcz, Polish State Secretary of the Ministry of Justice. In their speeches, all of them assessed the functioning of EU legal system in their respective countries and commented on both the positives and negatives of the membership. Ms Rudzińska-Bluszcz stated that the EU no longer has the same shape as it had twenty years ago and pointed to several changes that took place during that period. She stated that there is enhanced cooperation between the states within the EU and there is also a harmonisation of legal systems, based on the European values.
Then, in the discussion, Dean Burda asked the participants the first question, "Where do you see areas of law that are over-regulated by the EU and where do you see areas that still require a certain degree of the European regulation in order to function properly and efficiently?" From the discussion, it became clear that it is necessary to examine the case law and, based on it, to identify which areas of legislation need to be regulated. At the same time, it is important to focus on consolidating national legislation in the areas of cultural and ethical issues, family law and judiciary, with the need for further regulation in the area of digitalisation and the online space. Participants also pointed out that the EU produces a large amount of legislation that creates a confusing network of the legal system. They concluded the topic by stating that EU legislation should be adapted to the 21st century and move forward by anticipating and predicting certain social phenomena in the future.
The discussion was followed by Dean Burda's statement that, unlike the Anglo-American system, the judicial law-making is not inherent in the continental system of law. He asked those present whether, in view of the fact that the EU had adopted many elements of the Anglo-American legal system, we were not thereby getting into a situation where judges were confusing their role and interpreting the law beyond the scope of their competences and whether there was a need to strengthen judicial law-making or to set up regulations in this respect. "The Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU) is indispensable in judicial drafting of EU law, but this should be based on the principles of subsidiarity and proportionality. The CJEU seeks to strengthen EU position, which comes at the expense of the identity of the member states," the Minister of Justice of the Slovak Republic said on the issue. The discussion focused on the expansion of the competences of the CJEU, which currently has various consequences, and this creates the need to reflect and rethink the entire EU legislative practice. Those present agreed that procedures of the CJEU are too long and that speed of decision-making is one of the fundamental features of justice.
At the end of the first panel, the relationship between national and EU law was discussed and the question of what the concept of the rule of law meant to the guests was also raised.
