Seminar on Qualitative Theory of Differential Equations - Hana Krakovská (24.10.2024)

Thursday 24.10.2024 at 14:00, Lecture room M 223

Hana Krakovská (Medical University of Vienna):
Resilience of attractors in dynamical systems

Abstract:
While local stability has been extensively studied in dynamical systems theory, assessing "non-local" stability or "resilience", is a challenging task. There are numerous interpretations and definitions of resilience, primarily driven by applied fields, which are often vague. However, to develop a mathematical theory of resilience that can be used across various domains, it is essential to establish precise and rigorous definitions of resilience indicators. In the talk, I will present and analyze the most relevant resilience indicators for the attractors in continuous dynamical systems. Additionally, I will compare the resilience indicators in a classic ordinary differential equation model from population dynamics with the Allee effect, demonstrating that a detailed mathematical analysis leads to direct quantitative comparisons of resilience in different parameter regimes. I will highlight that our analysis reveals different conclusions about the resilience of the attractor depending on which indicator is used. Thus, it is crucial to carefully determine the nature of the perturbations that affect the attractor when posing a resilience question and select an appropriate resilience indicator accordingly.
The talk is based on the paper
Krakovská H, Kuehn C, Longo IP: Resilience of dynamical systems.
European Journal of Applied Mathematics 35 (2024), 155-200.

New Classrooms for Simulation-Based Teaching

This summer, the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine expanded the teaching facilities at the Medical...

"We find smaller rooms more suitable for our needs. The original space was divided with partitions, allowing us to create more classrooms," explained Professor Jana Plevková, MD, PhD, Director of the Medical Education Support Center. She further clarified that the expansion was in response to the increased demand from clinical staff interested in teaching students at the simulation center. "With only two classrooms, we couldn't accommodate all the requests. Teaching often extended into the late evening hours. Now, up to five instructors can conduct simulations or practical exercises simultaneously," she added.
The facility now includes classrooms for teaching surgical subjects and internal medicine, as well as two separate simulation rooms equipped with a control room. In these rooms, two simulations can be run at the same time, allowing students to work alone with a patient while technicians and instructors observe from another room. These spaces are mainly used for courses in first aid and emergency medicine. Additionally, a fifth classroom is being prepared, which will feature the birthing simulator Victoria. The construction modifications required an investment of up to 20,000 euros.
Simulation-based teaching has become a standard in medical education. At the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, students begin their simulation training in the first year of their studies. "It is highly effective because muscle memory and repeated practice allow even students with fewer skills to master techniques sufficiently," said Professor Plevková. The faculty plans to further expand simulation-based teaching by participating in a funding initiative from the Slovak Ministry of Education to support simulation centers at faculties. "We expect to secure a larger amount of funding, which will cover the modification of existing spaces and allow us to create entirely new ones directly within the University Hospital Martin," concluded Professor Jana Plevková.

15 October 2024, UN

Our student Sofia Šillerová, who holds the position of youth delegate, had the opportunity to represent Slovak youth at the highest international level! During the first two weeks of September she attended the Summit of the Future and the UN General Assembly.
Sofia was present at the adoption of the new Pact for the Future, which sets out priorities and measures to address global challenges. As the youth delegate of the Slovak Republic to the UN, she spoke in the third committee, where she stressed the importance of meaningful youth participation in decision-making processes.
We are proud of Sofia and her contribution to Slovak youth!

Doctoral colloquium - Lukáš Gajdošech (14.10.2024)

Monday 14.10.2024 at 13:10, Lecture room I/9

Lukáš Gajdošech:
From Synthetic Data to Real-World HRI: Leveraging 3D Vision for Humanoid Robotic Perception
Abstract:
In this talk, I will present my research timeline towards the recent work at the intersection of Computer Vision, 3D perception, and Human-Robot Interaction (HRI). My research projects so far focused on object detection, classification, and localization in industrial settings. Due to the scarcity of available data from such environments, we tackled these problems by training models on synthetic data. However, these approaches encounter limitations when applied to objects from problematic materials. The complexity of photorealistically rendering materials, such as glass, often leads to poor generalization in real-world scenarios. Building on this experience, in connection with international colleagues, my current interest shifts toward real-world data capture in the context of Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) context. I had an opportunity to work with a robotics team to enhance a humanoid robot’s ability to collaborate with humans in the task of pouring liquids into transparent containers. This task presents unique challenges in perception, scene reconstruction, and real-time interaction. Additionally, the design of the data-capturing procedure enabling further research in different areas of computer vision will be discussed. These include advances in NeRF evaluation, surface fusion, depth estimation, and transparent object detection.

Two of our colleagues, Prof. Farkaš and Dr. Herman, reached the finals of the prestigious ESET Science Award, where they ultimately triumphed. The award ceremony took place on Thursday, 10 October 2024, at the Slovak Philharmonic in Reduta.
In the category of Outstanding Academic in Slovakia, the winner was our colleague Prof. Igor Farkaš, one of Slovakia’s leading experts in artificial intelligence, neural networks, and cognitive science. At the Centre for Cognitive Science, he has long focused on researching artificial neural network models and their applications in cognitive science and robotics. He has supervised 12 PhD students, founded the interdisciplinary Master’s degree programme in Cognitive Science, and secured numerous domestic and international research grants. Additionally, he has served for many years as the head of the Department of Applied Informatics.
In the category of Outstanding Scientist in Slovakia Under the Age of 35, the winner was Dr. František Herman from the Department of Experimental Physics, who returned to Slovakia after completing his postdoctoral studies at ETH Zurich. His research, conducted with a team of students, focuses on theoretical condensed matter physics, particularly superconductivity and the microscopic effects of disorder. He is actively involved in teaching and mentoring, having led several successful student research projects. He was also awarded the prestigious SASPRO2 grant.
In the category of Outstanding Scientist in Slovakia, the winner was Prof. Mária Bieliková, who previously worked at FEI and FIIT. One of her most notable achievements was founding the Kempelen Institute of Intelligent Technologies (KInIT), the first independent AI research institute in Slovakia.
We sincerely congratulate all the awardees and wish them continued creative success in the future.
