Bi-lingual study programmes in the areas of management, medicine, biochemistry, mathematics and physics attracted the greatest interest. Comenius University offers potential students Slovak lectures and preparatory courses to master the language. Visitors were also interested in continuing their master or doctoral studies in Slovakia, and asked about the practical aspects of student life in Bratislava, like accommodation options, living expenses and possible study mobilities abroad.
World Education Fair is the largest network of recruitment events in Southeast Europe. For 16 years, it has been holding events focusing on education in Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Slovenia, Albania, Serbia, and in Lithuania in the Baltics, connecting educational institutions with current and potential students, and creating opportunities for personal meetings.
The participation of CU in fairs in the Balkans was supported from the Recovery and Resilience Facility of the Slovak Republic as part of the "Support for the promotion of universities abroad" call.

Nuclear Seminar - Mgr. Ovidiu Nitescu (30.10.2024)

Wednesday 30.10.2024 at 14:00, Lecture room F1/364

Mgr. Ovidiu Nitescu (doktorand KJFB):
Nuclear beta and double beta decay studies for neutrino physics
Abstract:
We investigate the atomic exchange effect between the final atom's bound electrons and those emitted in the allowed β decay and 2νββ decay of the initial nucleus. The electron wave functions are obtained with the Dirac-Hartree-Fock-Slater self-consistent method, and we ensure the orthogonality between the continuum and bound electron states of the final atom by modifying the last iteration of the self-consistent method. We argue that our findings can solve the mismatch between the predictions and experimental measurements in the low-energy region of the β spectrum. The relevance of exchange corrections is also analyzed in the context of one of the most promising candidates for determining the neutrino mass scale: the unique first forbidden β transition of 187Re. Additionally, we examine the contribution of all s-wave electrons available for capture in the two-neutrino double electron capture (2νECEC) processes, going beyond the K and L1 orbitals considered in prior studies. A systematic study is conducted for all nuclei undergoing 2νECEC process, and more details and improvements are presented for the recently measured 2νECEC process of 124Xe. Finally, based on the observation that the effective nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) of two-neutrino double beta decay in both neutron-rich and proton-rich nuclei span similar ranges, we propose a semi-empirical formula (SEF) for calculating the NMEs. Compared with the previous phenomenological and nuclear models, the SEF yields the best agreement with the experimental NMEs. Its stability and predictive power are cross-validated, and predictions are provided for nuclear systems of experimental interest.

Doctoral colloquium - Daniel Kyselica (28.10.2024)

Monday 28.10.2024 at 13:10, Lecture room I/9

Daniel Kyselica:
Processing of light curves of satellites and space debris for the purpose of their identification
Abstract:
With the increase in space traffic in recent years, precise monitoring of space debris is necessary. Observations in the form of light curves provide us with information about an object’s physical properties including shape, size, surface materials and rotation. Publicly available databases contain a huge amount of gathered light curves that can be used to train machine learning models. Pieces of space debris can fall down to the Earth in a process called reentry, therefore 3D reconstruction of this event can bring more understanding of the physical processes.

Doctoral colloquium - Jozef Kubík (21.10.2024)

Monday 21.10.2024 at 13:10, Lecture room I/9

Jozef Kubík:
Active learning for Bert models in Slovak language
Abstract:
Large language models pretrained on (general) language data are often used for many different specific text classification tasks. Success in these tasks depends not only on pre-training on a large amount of raw data, but also on fine-tuning on a smaller amount of (usually hand-annotated) task-relevant data. Popular languages such as English or French usually do not have problems with data availability. On the other hand, low-resource languages, such as Slovak, suffer from the lack of training data in general. This is even more pronounced for fine-tuning. Manual annotating is not only expensive and time-consuming, but it also depends on how many people can actually annotate data in a given language.
In our work, we try to experiment with the fine-tuning process of models pre-trained in low-resource language (Slovak). The goal is to improve these models to produce similar or better results while reducing the amount of annotated data needed in the fine-tuning process. For this, we connect the fine-tuning process to different functions from Active learning paradigm, in which the model itself tries to tell us which data should be preferentially annotated, thus reducing the amount and cost of manual annotation.

Peter Mészáros:
Schwarzschild spacetime with extra compact dimensions
Abstract:
There are two branches of 1+(3+n)-dimensional spacetimes with (1+3)-di\-men\-si\-o\-nal part corresponding to spherically symmetric spacetime and with Euclidean symmetry in n extra dimensions which satisfy vacuum Einstein field equations. One branch is a trivial extension of the Schwarzschild spacetime, while the second branch is nontrivial. The extra dimensions may be compactified, so that, in principle, these solutions may be relevant in our (1+3)-dimensional Universe. We will discuss some unusual features of the nontrivial case, based on tests through Newtonian limit, Kretschmann scalar invariant, and conserved energy defined through Landau-Lifshitz stress-energy pseudotensor. These tests indicate nonphysical properties.

Seminar on Qualitative Theory of Differential Equations - Hana Krakovská (24.10.2024)

Thursday 24.10.2024 at 14:00, Lecture room M 223

Hana Krakovská (Medical University of Vienna):
Resilience of attractors in dynamical systems

Abstract:
While local stability has been extensively studied in dynamical systems theory, assessing "non-local" stability or "resilience", is a challenging task. There are numerous interpretations and definitions of resilience, primarily driven by applied fields, which are often vague. However, to develop a mathematical theory of resilience that can be used across various domains, it is essential to establish precise and rigorous definitions of resilience indicators. In the talk, I will present and analyze the most relevant resilience indicators for the attractors in continuous dynamical systems. Additionally, I will compare the resilience indicators in a classic ordinary differential equation model from population dynamics with the Allee effect, demonstrating that a detailed mathematical analysis leads to direct quantitative comparisons of resilience in different parameter regimes. I will highlight that our analysis reveals different conclusions about the resilience of the attractor depending on which indicator is used. Thus, it is crucial to carefully determine the nature of the perturbations that affect the attractor when posing a resilience question and select an appropriate resilience indicator accordingly.
The talk is based on the paper
Krakovská H, Kuehn C, Longo IP: Resilience of dynamical systems.
European Journal of Applied Mathematics 35 (2024), 155-200.
