Doctoral colloquium - Adams Zekeri (18.11.2024)

Monday 18.11.2024 at 13:10, Lecture room I/9

[Translate to English:] Prednášajúci: Adams Zekeri
Názov: Leveraging Meta-Modelling Language for Ontology Structuring and Validation
Termín: 18.11.2024, 13:10 hod., I/9
Abstrakt:
Knowledge representation (KR) is foundational to AI, providing the structures that enable systems to reason and interpret complex domains, powering applications like expert systems and intelligent agents. Yet, traditional KR methods struggle with the growing complexity in fields like biomedicine, finance, and cybersecurity, where inter-dependencies and rapid change challenge accurate representation. Meta-modeling offers a flexible solution with reusable frameworks that improve adaptability. Ontological meta-modeling, in particular, provides hierarchical structures for more abstract, adaptable models. However, current frameworks often lack standardized formal structures and strong theoretical foundations, limiting practical adoption. Issues in validation and consistency further constrain scalability in real-world settings. Our study addresses some of these gaps by formalizing the PURO meta-modeling language, focusing on theoretical rigor and verification techniques for consistency.

Seminar on Qualitative Theory of Differential Equations - Hana Mizerová (5.12.2024)

Thursday 5.12.2024 at 14:00, Lecture room M 223

Hana Mizerová:
Dissipative weak solutions in numerical analysis of compressible Euler equations

Abstract:
Numerical simulation of fluid dynamics plays an important role in a wide range of modern industrial and real life applications, such as vehicle engineering, engines design, aerospace or weather forecast. In the past decades, great effort was put in the development of efficient and accurate numerical methods. Based on our approach to numerical analysis of nonlinear equations of fluid dynamics in the spirit of the Lax Equivalence Principle (stability + consistency = convergence), dissipative weak solutions may be seen as a universal closure of stable and consistent approximations. Numerical solution of the complete compressible Euler equations stated in the conservative variables lacks uniform bounds to control the integrability of the convective terms in the discrete energy inequality. To solve this problem, we study convergence of these approximations in terms of the conservative-entropy variables. Combining the concept of dissipative weak solutions, the set-valued version of the Strong law of large numbers and Komlós theorem on strong convergence of empirical averages of integrable functions, we obtain several results on convergence of the Monte Carlo method applied to the isentropic Euler equations with uncertain initial data.
These results are based on a joint work with E. Feireisl, M. Lukáčová, B. She, and C. Yu.

Nuclear Seminar - Sara Rebecca Gozzini (20.11.2024)

Wednesday 20.11.2024 at 14:00, Lecture room F1/364

Dr. Sara Rebecca Gozzini (Instituto de Física Corpuscular, CSIC and University of Valencia, Spain):
The KM3NeT Neutrino Telescope: Indirect Searches for New Physics

Abstract:
KM3NeT is a multi-purpose neutrino observatory under construction in the Mediterranean Sea. It is composed of two Cherenkov detectors with different designs: ORCA, a compact and dense detector optimised for the high-statistic measurement of atmospheric neutrino physics in the 1- 100 GeV energy range, and ARCA, a set of two telescopes instrumenting a cubic kilometre to catch fluxes of extraterrestrial neutrinos from 100 GeV to 10 PeV. With a modular layout, KM3NeT takes data promptly upon deployment throughout its installation phase. Beyond astronomy and oscillation physics, KM3NeT searches for neutrinos produced in pair annihilations of dark matter. The Galactic Centre, which is thought to host the largest close-by over-density of dark matter, is in good visibility from the KM3NeT site, which gives this detector a unique opportunity to set limits on a signal of dark-matter induced neutrinos from this source. KM3NeT has the chance to investigate other effects of physics beyond the Standard Model through modifications that those induce to the flavour oscillation pattern of atmospheric neutrinos. A data set recorded with a partial configuration of KM3NeT has been analysed in search for non-standard interactions, neutrino decay, and neutrino quantum decoherence.

Faculty is a world research centre in several scientific areas

FMPI CU is in the ScholarGPS® ranking evaluated as a world research centre in environmental...

<link https://scholargps.com/ _blank>ScholarGPS®
, an American company based in California launched the premier online source for the analysis and rating of scientists at universities and other institutions, which is based on scientific publications (journals, books, patents). The compilation of metadata covers more than 200 million publications of over 30 million scholars from 55,000 institutions, as well as rankings of more than 15,000 academic institutions from over 200 countries. Artificial intelligence platforms have been applied for ranking of scholars and institutions in 14 Fields, 177 Disciplines, and over 350,000 Specialities. The rankings are based on a specific quality index, which covers authors‘ productivity, impact, and quality of outputs. However, as only publications up to 20 authors have been evaluated, these rankings do not cover multiauthor papers mostly published in physics (e.g., in particle physics and nuclear physics). Outputs are arranged either in the lifetime mode, or over the recent 5 years.
FMPI CU in lifetime ranking together with FNS CU is a world leader in Radioanalytical chemistry, and in the last 5 years (2018-2022), in the top ten are listed Environmental radioactivity (#3), Radioanalytical chemistry (#5), Nuclear chemistry (#5), and Plasma physics (#8). In the last 5 years mode, Pavel Povinec is listed as #5 in Environmental radioactivity, in Radioanalytical chemistry and also in Nuclear chemistry, and Štefan Matejčík as #22 in Plasma Physics. Behind these successful stories there have been over hundred colleagues from FNS CU, FMPI CU, FPHARM, and from the CU Science Park, whose ratings allowed the faculty to gain such a prominent position in the scientific world, although about 50% of publications (mostly in Physics) have not been included in the evaluations as they exceeded the permitted limit of 20 authors/publication.

Cities in Motion: Cities partner up with universities to seek transport solutions

Cooperation between universities and their cities is one of the priorities of the ENLIGHT alliance....

Cycling in the dark in Ghent
Our alliance partners are much further in supporting bike transport and shared mobility solutions. Together with the Netherlands and Denmark, Belgium is one of the European cycling superpowers and 85% of the population of the university city of Ghent use a bicycle daily to travel to work or school. Public debate no longer focuses on building infrastructure. One of the current debates is how to increase bike use at night. "Many people are afraid to bike in the dark, because of poorly lit bicycle paths. Therefore, we are looking at ways of designing the lighting so that the safety of cyclists is improved while biodiversity is not disturbed," said Hannah Hook from the University of Ghent, presenting a project in which the local government cooperates with the university to improve cycling at night.
Winter bike tires in Uppsala
The university city Uppsala may be located in the north of Europe and is covered in snow for several months of the year, but bicycles have been the primary means of transport for several decades. "In the winter, we clear the snow on bike paths and put winter tires on our bikes," said Teresa Uggla from the municipality of Uppsala. She presented the city's plan, according to which climate neutrality in transport should be achieved by 2030. The city builds new rental houses without parking spaces for cars, but with sufficient infrastructure for bicycles. One of the challenges they are currently facing is dealing with a city borough housing many immigrants who have not brought a positive attitude towards bicycle transport from their countries.
In Galway they dress for the weather
The municipality of Galway in Ireland also strongly supports sustainable transportation in the city. Recently, an elegant steel bridge for cyclists and pedestrians was built next to the historic Bridge of Hope in the city centre. It is located on the campus grounds and the University of Galway participated in its construction, as was explained by Eoghan McDermott from Galway Municipality in his presentation. Even though rains are a frequent occurrence in the region, students and residents use bikes every day. "It's all about your mindset. We dress for the weather," says Eoghan McDermott.
Car-free schoolstreets in Bratislava
At present, Bratislava is still a city where people prefer to travel by car. Nevertheless, there is a gradual shift towards more sustainable modes, as shown by Dorota Šaríková and Katarína Bajerčík Kocková from the Bratislava Metropolitan Institute that is a part of the municipality. They presented a project named "school streets" which involved a series of gradual, well-thought-out steps to increase safety and motivate children to use bikes or scooters, or walk to school. The project is developed jointly by MIB and the Department of economic and social geography, demography and territorial development of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University. Department member Marcel Horňák took the guests from partner municipalities and universities on a city tour to the borough of Petržalka along the new tram line and spoke about specific urban design choices made during socialism. The tour ended in Eurovea on the bank of the Danube, which is an example of efficient and modern use of public space and a successful attempt to return urban life to the riverfront.
Inspiration from the partners
"The meeting showed how important it is to connect universities and cities and seek modern sustainable transport solutions while involving students. It appears that we can inspire each other through this cooperation. I hope that we will meet more frequently as part of ENLIGHT activities and that this cooperation will bear fruit in the form of actual projects," says Marcel Horňák.

Record-Breaking Funds Raised by the Medical Charity Run for Pediatric Patients

On Tuesday, November 6, the organizers of the 8th Medical Charity Run presented proceeds from the...

The 8th run attracted over 740 participants, and while previous years saw more runners, this year’s total fundraising exceeded all past records. "I'm thrilled about it," said organizer and student Amy Van Brecht. "Most volunteers were medical students who not only educated the public at booths during related events but also participated as runners. I’m glad this event has gained popularity not only among medical students but also the general public." She expressed appreciation for the collective effort in making a positive impact for pediatric patients in the hospital while promoting health and fitness.
The Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University (JFMED CU) in Martin has long supported this event. “I greatly appreciate our students’ commitment to this charitable cause, and I was pleasantly surprised by this year’s donation amount. I trust the clinic will use the funds effectively to support children in need. The event is always accompanied by strong emotions, and I am very grateful to the organizer and her team. I am incredibly proud of them,” stated JLF UK Dean Professor Andrea Čalkovská, MD, DSc., at the donation handover.
The entire sum is designated for the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the children’s clinic. “We are delighted with this amount; it was a wonderful surprise. Given the current healthcare situation, any support to improve quality care for our youngest patients is most welcome,” said Professor Miloš Jeseňák, MD, PhD, MBA, Dott.Ric., MHA, head of the Clinic of Pediatrics at University Hospital Martin. He added that the funds will go toward improving various aspects of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. “We aim to make the patient intake process more efficient and to enhance comfort for both young patients and their accompanying parents.”
The clinic plans to purchase new infusion pumps and perfusers, replace some beds, and create a separate observation room. “We currently lack an observation or intake area in the children’s clinic. Space is limited not only for admitting pediatric patients needing intensive care. A dedicated room will allow patient intake, even at night, to occur without disrupting care for other pediatric patients on the ward,” explained the clinic’s primary physician, Peter Ďurdík, MD, PhD.
The Medical Charity Run has supported the Clinic of Pediatrics in previous years. Proceeds from the 7th run funded a complete renovation of a room for pediatric oncology patients. "Parents are very happy about this, as the children now have a more comfortable space that feels less like a hospital," shared the clinic’s head nurse, Ivana Dzurecová, PhDr. The 9th Medical Charity Run will take place in 2025, with proceeds once again designated for pediatric departments at the University Hospital Martin.

Abstract:
In the first part of the seminar, we focus on the origin and general properties of CP asymmetric reactions, which are needed to generate the matter-antimatter asymmetry according to the Sakharov conditions. Then, in the second part, a leptogenesis model will be introduced, in which massless right-handed neutrinos undergoing ultraviolet freeze-in are the only out-of-equilibrium particles. It will be shown that even though the lepton number source term vanishes, opposite asymmetries of the decoupled right-handed neutrinos and standard model leptons are washed in.
