Nuclear Seminar - Lucia Keszeghová (27.11.2024)

Wednesday 27.11.2024 at 14:00, Lecture room F1/364

Mgr. Lucia Keszeghová:
Associated production of the top-quark pair and Z boson in proton-proton collisions at the ATLAS experiment

Abstract:

The largest grant in the history of the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University will support research into loneliness and social isolation

Loneliness and social isolation are increasingly common in our society. Some experts even call the...

Researchers from the Department of Psychology of the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University in Bratislava (FARS) received a prestigious research grant from the Excellent Science scheme of the Recovery and Resilience Facility. "We are extremely happy that we managed to win this grant despite the strong competition. Over the next two years, this grant will enable us to carry out comprehensive research into the social, psychological and neurobiological underpinnings of loneliness and social isolation. We are planning to focus both on the general population, and also on people with mental disorders, who are at greater risk of loneliness and social isolation," explains research team leader, Associate Professor Michal Hajdúk. "We are very pleased that this ground-breaking research will be conducted at the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University. The DISCONNECT project represents significant progress in the field of psychological research in Slovakia, because it involves very diverse research methods and a thoroughly interdisciplinary approach," added Marián Zouhar, dean of FARS.
Loneliness and social isolation have a negative impact on overall physical and mental health. They increase the risk of premature death, because insufficient quality and quantity of social relationships are linked to increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Even international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) have been adopting measures to raise awareness of this issue and developed a number of guidelines. The WHO Commission on Social Connections was created in recognition of this issue as a global public health priority. "We would like to follow up on these international initiatives. The DISCONNECT project is a pioneering way of obtaining a deep understanding of the issue, especially among the vulnerable population, which includes younger adults as well as older people," explains project leader Michal Hajdúk.
The project will launch with a large-scale epidemiological study on 3,000 subjects. "We hope to collect enough data to enable international comparisons, while at the same time identifying high-risk social groups in Slovakia. It will help us make informed decisions to battle against this problem,” Associate Professor Hajdúk stated. The project will make use of digital technologies to personalise patient contact along with modern neuroscientific methods. A well-equipped research lab will be created at the Department of Psychology to study the neurobiological mechanisms of loneliness and social isolation.
DISCONNECT is expected to contribute to increased awareness of loneliness and social isolation and to generate recommendations for the healthcare and social care sectors.

Seminar of Department of Theoretical Physics - Michaela Brchnelová (26.11.2024)

Tuesday 26.11.2024 at 14:30, Lecture room F2/125

Michaela Brchnelová:
Space weather: the good, the bad and the ugly

Abstract:
In 1967, space weather almost caused the third world war when the Sun blinded the US Ballistic Missile Early Warning System, with the Americans thinking that this was caused by the Russians. In 1989, millions of people in Québec, Canada, remained without electricity for hours as a result of a geomagnetic storm. In 2015, Sweden had to ground air traffic for over an hour as a result of a solar storm. Space weather can disrupt our critical systems and infrastructure, and the only way to mitigate and/or limit its damage remains, for now, accurate forecasting and modelling of its phenomena in real time. As these phenomena, however, contain fairly advanced physics, including some of it that we still do not understand, modelling these in real time ranges between difficult to impossible, depending on the accuracy that we need to achieve. In this seminar, I first introduce the topic of space weather, including the causes and the possible effects. Then, I will talk about some of the techniques we currently use to model and forecast it and where the current biggest challenges lie.

Academic commendations are awarded by the Rector to those students who achieve excellent academic results, exhibit exemplary student participation and civic involvement, or represent the university. This year, CU rector Marek Števček presented awards to thirty students.
One of them was Claudia Feitscherová who studies general medicine and researched the distribution of immune cells in selected organs of the reproductive system and their impact on fertility. Another awardee was Dominika Lešková, a student of ethnology and laureate of the prestigious Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund, who was honoured for her excellent study and research results.
Michal Kaššaj, a student of management, also received the award. His papers accumulated international renown and have 60 citations in the Web of Science and Scopus databases. Several students received the commendation for representing the university in sports. Two of them, Eliška Mintálová a Tamara Potocká, participated in the Summer Olympics in Paris.
Thirty teachers also received letters of gratitude from the rector for their contribution to the success of their students in science, arts and professional life. They include civil law expert Romana Smyčková, historian Eva Benková, naturalist Adrian Purkart, seismologist Peter Moczo, mathematician Paul Quittner, and others.
This was the first occasion on which the rector presented awards to authors of four exceptional publications:
Róbert Letz and Peter Ženuch for the monograph: The tradition of Cyril and Methodius as a fundamental element of the religious and national identity of Slovaks,
Martin Hurbanič, Dušan Zupka and Lukáš Rybár for two volumes entitled Central Europe across times, Studies in social history I. - II.,
Boris Mravec for an extensive monograph on the neurobiology of tumours - Neurobiology of Cancer. Role of the Nervous System in Cancer Etiopathogenesis, Treatment, and Prevention,
and Tibor Macko for a book on mathematics named Surgery Theory.
They received awards for extraordinary contributions in the fields of social science, humanities, medicine, and natural sciences because of their original approaches, extraordinary contributions to their fields, and practical benefits of their work.
In his speech, the rector commemorated the 35th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution and reminded of its ideals of freedom and hope for a better life which require constant effort to maintain. "Let us remember the main thing that must matter to us at the university: a deep respect for other people's opinions, beliefs, or faith. But when it comes to the proverbial breaking of bread, emotions must give way to disciplined, evidence-based thinking. This is the only known antidote to social network algorithms that create dangerous echo chambers and lead to social polarization. Polarization breeds fanatics who are not afraid to spill the blood of others and therefore, let us empathetically respect the opinions of others, but let us insist on the basic principles of scientific thinking." said Marek Števček, Rector of Comenius University, in his address to the awardees.

Seminar of Department of Theoretical Physics - Hamed Mohammady (19.11.2024)

Tuesday 19.11.2024 at 14:00, Lecture room F2/125

Hamed Mohammady:
Physical constraints on the quantum measurement process
Abstract:
In the general framework of operational quantum physics, the observables of a quantum system are represented by normalised positive operator valued measures (POVMs) which, together with states, produce the probability distributions obtained when measuring a system. Similarly, the so-called state-update rule is characterised by instruments, which transform the system to be measured in such a way so as to be compatible with the observed measurement statistics. Instruments that reveal non-trivial information about the measured system necessarily disturb at least some property of the system: there is no information without disturbance. However, quantum theory allows for some observables to be measured in a "minimally invasive" fashion, so that at least the measured observable itself is not disturbed by the act of measurement. Such measurements are referred to as "measurements of the first kind", which include the standard formulation of measurements in textbook quantum mechanics. But assuming the universal validity of quantum theory, a quantum system of interest is measured when it undergoes an appropriate interaction with another quantum system playing the role of a measuring apparatus. It stands to reason, therefore, that the measurement process must be compatible with other known physical laws aside from quantum theory: for example, conservation laws and the laws of thermodynamics. In this talk, I will discuss how conservation laws, as well as the second and third laws of thermodynamics, impose fundamental constraints on the observables that can be measured, and their commensurate disturbance, in practice.
