Abstract:
The results of pilot study performed on data from selected homes in Slovakia suggested that the best agreement between measured and calculated annual mean indoor radon activity concentration were obtained using seasonal correction factors determined for winter season December – February. The first seasonal correction factors for Slovakia were estimated on the basis of 3-month indoor measurements using radon track detectors. Further, seasonal correction factors were applied on results obtained during a new, independent radon survey performed in homes during years 2022-2023. In this study, 79 rooms were monitored throughout the year in four cycles based on 3-month indoor radon measurements in areas with high, medium and low soil radon potential.

Algebraic Graph Theory Seminar - Roman Nedela (29.11.2024)

Friday 19.11.2024 at 13:15, Lecture room VIII (online too)

Roman Nedela (University of West Bohemia, Plzeň, Czech Republic):
Topological equivalence between groups of symmetries of Riemann surfaces and generation of the automorphism group of a Fuchsian group
Abstract:
In my talk I will discuss the problem of classification of classes of topological equivalence of finite group actions on Riemann surfaces. By the Riemann-Hurwitz bound, there are just finitely many groups that act conformally on a closed orientable surface S_g of genus g≥2. With each such action of a group G on S_g one can associate the fundamental group Γ =π(O) of the quotient orbifold O=S_g/G, isomorphic to a Fuchsian group determined completely by the orbifold’s signature. The Riemann existence theorem reduces the problem of the existence of an action of G on S_g to a purely group-theoretical problem of deciding whether there is an smooth epimorphism mapping the Fuchsian group Γonto the group G. Using computer algebra systems such as Magma or GAP, together with the library of small groups, the generation of all finite group actions on a surface of fixed small genus g≥2 becomes almost a routine procedure. The difficult part is to determine the classes of these actions with respect to topological equivalence. To achieve this, one needs to investigate the action of the automorphism group of a Fuchsian group on the set of finite group actions on S_g with the corresponding signature. We derive several results on the topological equivalence of finite group actions on Riemann surfaces. As an application, we derive complete lists of finite group actions of genus g≤8 distinguished up to the topological equivalence. By a classical result of Zieshang every automorphism of a Fuchsian group lifts to an automorphism of the corresponding free group. Therefore the problem of determining the equivalence classes is closely related to the problem of determining a proper generating set of the group of lifts. The latter requires to employ techniques of combinatorial group theory.

Young pharmacists honour actress Emília Vášáryová

Bratislava, 22 November 2024: The Slovak Association of Pharmacy Students is launching an award...

The physical representation of the award is a cracked megaphone. "Metaphorically, it reminds us that words and voice itself are very powerful and can move the world. The award itself is quite heavy. The path to success is not always easy, and is often beset by obstacles that test our grit and determination. It also represents the voice of young pharmacists - the award was conceived by us students who possess the ambition to advance patient care, healthcare and the field of pharmacy itself," said Ivana Radosová, vice-president of the Slovak Association of Pharmacy Students, while presenting the award.
In her address, she recalled student involvement in the events of November 1989, which set off the Velvet Revolution, precipitating the fall of the totalitarian regime in the former Czechoslovakia. "Let us learn from our past and our history. Let our voice and the voice of those who fought for freedom and democracy 35 years ago not be silenced," urged Ivana Radosová.
In her thank-you speech, Emília Vášaryová endorsed the legacy of November '89. "I am grateful for standing once again on academic soil. We were meeting here quite often those thirty-five years ago. Students from various faculties were coming to the auditorium and my son was a member of the strike committee. I greatly appreciate and see it as an honour to be here with you this evening," added the award-winning actress.
The Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy (FPharm) Ján Klimas also spoke of the new award created by young pharmacists: "I am proud of our students. It is reassuring to see that the younger generation understands values and feels the need to remember them."
The film Docentka z lekárne (Associate professor from the pharmacy) was an initiative of the Slovak Chamber of Pharmacists in cooperation with FPharm. Its first screening in the CU's Auditorium which took place after the professor's lecture by Dean Ján Klimas, was attended by its creators. Their team was led by director Adriana Totiková, who spoke highly of the collaboration with Ondrej Sukeľ and Lenka Vasiľová from the Slovak Chamber of Pharmacists, and with Professor Klimas from FPharm. "Creating such a work of art was quite difficult. It took days, weeks and months of poring over archives. The resulting film is a proof that art can be combined with science. I am very pleased that Madam Vášaryová agreed to voice associate professor Zemanová Šimaljaková. Let the associate professor's legacy live on," said Adriana Totiková after the screening of the film.
Jarmila Zemanová Šimaljaková (née Raimanová) was a distinguished Slovak pharmacist who was the first woman in history to hold the position of vice-dean in Slovakia, the first female associate professor in the field of pharmacy in Czechoslovakia, the first woman on the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Pharmacy, and the head of the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical-Industrial Operations at FPharm, which she also founded. At present, the faculty presents an award bearing her name to students who demonstrate exceptional preparedness for the profession of a pharmacist.
