Students and teachers receive Awards
Bratislava, 23 November 2021: On the occasion of the International Students’ Day, the Rector of Comenius University presented the award to nearly sixty students and teachers. For the second year in a row, the traditional ceremony has not taken place due to the pandemic but Comenius University Bratislava still continues to acknowledge the excellence of its exceptional students and teachers. Twenty-nine students and thirty teachers received the academic commendation of the Rector of Comenius University, one of them in memoriam.
Jana Cihanová is a student of civil law who presented a realistic proposal for the revival of tourism in Slovakia after the pandemic in the Youth Embassy category, including a financial plan. Jakub Martinček, a student of teaching of pedagogy and music, received the award for his research of how high school students could perform extra-curricular activities and use their free time productively during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Petra Lenčová who studies pharmacy also received the award. Her research of ischemia-reperfusion injury to organs in relation to kidney transplants won prizes in several competitions. Pavol Vigláš is four-time organizer of the Martinský beh medikov charity run of medical students from Martin who also participated in the organization of the Festival of Medical Students under the motto of 'Live and Let Live', linking sports, entertainment and culture with social life.
Several students received the award for their successes in sports. One of them is Veronika Vadovičová, a student of sports coaching, who has represented Slovakia in sport shooting for a number of years. So far, she participated in six Paralympic Games and her medal collection includes four gold medals from Rio de Janeiro, Beijing and Tokyo, one silver medal from Rio and a bronze medal from London. She holds the Paralympic record in the mixed 50 metre rifle prone discipline. Biochemistry student Patrícia Guspanová received the award for her second place in the C1 women 1000 metre and 500 metre categories and for her victory in the C1 women 200 metre category at the Slovak Canoe Sprint Championship.
The Rector of Comenius University presented the award for supporting the scientific, artistic or professional activities of their students to thirty teachers, including one in memoriam. Among them are surgeon and transplantologist Ľudovít Laca, historian Eva Škorvanková, sports physiologist and fitness popularizer Viktor Bielik, and theoretical physicist and popularizer of science Juraj Tekel. The late computer scientist and IT teacher Peter Tomcsányi received the award in memoriam for participating in the international committee of the iBobor competition.
"Those students who, in addition to their study duties, devote their time to research, social issues or sports, and spread the good name of our university, deserve our recognition. Every day, they receive support from teachers who are their tutors, mentors and role models. I am pleased that I can thank them all for representing our alma mater in this way, on the occasion of the International Students’Day," said the Rector of Comenius University Marek Števček.
