Matúš Horváth, a student at the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University is one of the victims of the shooting which happened on 12 October 2022 on Zámocká Street in Bratislava. Sadly, according to available information, his murder was motivated by hatred. It is scary to see what hatred against people, who are guilty of just being different, can do. We must renounce hatred more resolutely. This cannot go on!

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Rector Marek Števček said: "I am horrified. Being different is not a sin, a crime or a reason for hate. Let's all stand up against the hatred aimed at anyone. Hate is the worst emotion, because it only begets resentment, anxiety and misery. Yet more lives were wasted pointlessly, and for the most incomprehensibly absurd of reasons. Yet more pain for our university after such a short time. These are dark times for our institution. Matúš, rest in peace. I express my deepest, most sincere condolences to the relatives and loved ones."

On behalf of the university, we express our sincere condolences to the bereaved. For those who want to join us, the book of condolences will be available for signing in the vestibule of CU's building at Šafárik Square.

A passenger car drove into a group of people who were waiting for public transport at the bus stop on Zochová street in Bratislava’s Old Town. The driver killed five people, four of whom were university students.

Arrogance and irresponsibility was the cause of a tremendous amount of pain.
