Seminar of Graph Theory - Ján Pastorek (23.10.2025)

Thursday 23.10.2025 at 9:50, Lecture room M 213

Ján Pastorek:
Maximal Asymmetric Depth and Conference Graphs
Abstract:
Almost all graphs are asymmetric, possessing no nontrivial global automorphisms. Despite this fact, all graphs contain non-trivial local symmetries which we study using isomorphisms between induced subgraphs, known as partial automorphisms. We investigate the extent of asymmetry of graphs through the measure of asymmetric depth defined through the rank of the largest non-trivial partial automorphism. We will show a lower bound for the asymmetric depth of any simple graph Γ on n vertices. Any graph achieving this bound must be a strongly regular graph with parameters (n, (n−1)/2, (n−5)/4, (n−1)/4), also known as a conference graph. We implemented a parallel algorithm for checking asymmetric depth on a high-performance cluster. Using this algorithm, we identified an asymmetric conference graph on 37 vertices that attains this bound, thereby proving its tightness. We showed that it is of the smallest possible order to attain this bound by checking all asymmetric conference graphs up to 37 vertices.
The talk is based on joint work with Tatiana Jajcayová.

Biophysicist Zuzana Garaiová from CU Receives the L’Oréal–UNESCO For Women in Science Award

In the ninth edition of the L’Oréal–UNESCO For Women in Science programme, the award went to Zuzana...

Zuzana Garaiová focuses on the biophysical study of nanoparticles, such as nanoemulsions, which have potential applications in targeted cancer therapy. These are extremely small oil droplets dispersed in water, capable of delivering drugs directly into tumour cells and increasing treatment effectiveness. In developing the oil component of the nanoemulsions, she plans to explore the use of natural substances with anticancer properties, including squalene and pomegranate seed oil. She also aims to source these materials sustainably, for example from lipid-producing yeasts that can grow on inexpensive or waste substrates.
The L’Oréal–UNESCO For Women in Science programme supports women scientists working in Slovakia and highlights the importance of their research. Its ninth edition recognised three PhD holders aged 40 or under who work at Slovak research institutions. Each laureate received a financial award of EUR 7,000, which is not restricted to research use and can also support their professional development or private needs. A total of 30 talented researchers applied for the programme.
Scientific research remains a predominantly male field. According to 2023 Eurostat data, 7.7 million women scientists and engineers were employed in the European Union, representing only 41 percent of all workers in these sectors. The situation in Slovakia is even less favourable: women make up just 34.3 percent of scientific and engineering staff, placing Slovakia among the EU countries with the lowest share of women in science. Yet it is precisely the female perspective that brings new insights and innovative approaches to research.

CU RESEARCHERS EXPLORE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HUMOUR AND DEMOCRACY IN A EUROPEAN PROJECT

Bratislava, 16 October 2025: Comenius University Bratislava (CU) joined a research consortium of...

Four researchers from the Comenius Faculty of Arts represent CU in the
project – Associate Professor Nina Cingerová, Associate Professor Irina Dulebová and Associate Professor Katarína Motyková from numerous philological departments and Associate Professor Anna Sámelová from the Department of Journalism. As part of the project, they are researching Slovak humour in the online space. “Our goal is to better understand how the mechanisms of humour work online and what its pragmatic effects are. In general, we are interested in the role of humour in the support of democracy and civic participation,” as mentioned by Associate Professor Nina Cingerová.
On the one hand, humorous expression – even when provocative or controversial – is a vital ingredient of democratic life. On the other hand, especially in recent years, humour has been increasingly used as a disguise for spreading disinformation and hateful messages (for example in the form of racist or misogynist memes). Since the beginning of the 21st century, there has also been an increase in so-called “humour scandals”, starting with the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy back in 2006-2007 - when the publication of editorial cartoons depicting the Islamic Prophet Muhammad resulted in widespread protests, riots, and death threats to the cartoonists. Humour-related controversies have only become more frequent in recent years, as both a cause and effect of increasing polarisation.
Launched in March 2025, the first tangible result of the project is a
. As DELIAH member Dr. Aitor Castañeda-Zumeta of the University of the Basque Country remarks, “The way humour contributes to a better democracy is still not clear, but it has a great power to affect the way we see and understand the world. In this sense, we want to discover which are the best humour practices to promote democratic values.”
In addition to a better understanding of the role of humour in democracies, DELIAH will also develop evidence-based approaches to humour-related controversies. It will work with social media companies to develop more effective policies for the adjudication of humorous expression, with activists and civil society to develop effective counter-speech strategies, with schools and other organisations to develop educational programs and with different levels of public administration to formulate better policies.
“The research being conducted by the DELIAH team could not come at a better moment,” says DELIAH project coordinator Prof. Dr. Andrew Bricker of Ghent University. “We are addressing both sides of humour: the way humor contributes to democracy and public debate and the way humour sometimes harms European democratic participation by eroding trust, spreading disinformation, and undermining democratic values.”
DELIAH is made up of researchers divided into
from Ghent University (Belgium), the University of Groningen (The Netherlands), the Comenius University Bratislava (Slovakia), University of the Basque Country (Spain), University of Göttingen (Germany), University of Tartu (Estonia), and Cartoon Movement (The Netherlands).
DELIAH has two sister projects that are also funded by Horizon Europe. All three research projects were funded through a call for proposals focused on
.

explores how grassroots culture – from youth-led campaigns to protest art and nightlife activism – is shaping new forms of democratic participation across Europe.

pioneers an innovative approach to strengthening democracy by harnessing the transformative power of live action role-playing (LARP).

Doctoral colloquium - Elena Štefancová (20.10.2025)

Monday 20.10.2025 at 13:10 hod., Lecture room I 9

Elena Štefancová:
Trustworthy Recommender Systems
Abstract:
Artificial intelligence plays an increasingly important role in our society, however it also entails risks. Some of the potential solutions to make AI more trustworthy are greater transparency and fairness. This work investigates specific fairness aspects within recommender systems, focusing on their inter-relations and trade-offs. By analyzing various fairness dimensions, the research aims to interpret the results in a manner that enhances users' trust in the outputs provided by these systems. Furthermore, the work develops a novel synthetic data generation method designed to evaluate changes in the internal representation of recommender systems, facilitating a deeper understanding of their behavior and decision-making processes. The outcomes of this research provide valuable insights into the balance between fairness and performance, offering tools for more transparent and trustworthy recommender systems.

Seminar of Graph Theory - Stanislav Jendroľ (16.10.2025)

Thursday 16.10.2025 at 9:50, Lecture room M 213

Stanislav Jendroľ (UPJŠ Košice):
On colorings of plane graphs with few colors
Abstract:
A facial path in a plane graph G is a subpath of the boundary walk of a face of G. The Four Color Theorem states that every plane graph contains a proper vertex 4-coloring in which each monochromatic facial path consists of exactly one vertex. Czap, Fabrici, and Jendrol’ in 2021 conjectured that every plane graph G admits an improper vertex 3-coloring (resp. 2-coloring) in which every monochromatic facial path in G has at most two vertices (resp. three vertices). In our talk we present a proof of the first conjecture. Our result is optimal. Next we will present what is a set up on the second conjecture.
