Seminar on Qualitative Theory of Differential Equations - Patrik Mihala (30.10.2025)

Thursday 30.10.2025 at 14:00, Lecture room M 223

Patrik Mihala:
Fully Implicit Finite-Volume Method for Doubly-Nonlinear Diffusion in Two-Component Domain

Abstract:
This work models diffusion in two adjoining regions governed by a doubly nonlinear diffusion law. The regions are coupled across their common interface by continuity of the normal flux and a nonlinear Nernst-type relation. In the simulations we use a conservative finite-volume discretization in space and fully implicit time stepping with adaptive step sizes and adaptive damping. The interface condition is approximated by a penalty formulation. The resulting nonlinear system is solved by Newton's method with an analytic Jacobian. The experiments show close agreement with a validated explicit scheme with approximately half the computational time, successful computation of a stiff case that explicit scheme cannot compute, and long-time relaxation with a stable interface jump.
This is a joint work with J. Filo and J. Babušíková.

Nuclear Seminar - Horst Lenske (29.10.2025)

Wednesday 29.10.2025 at 14:00, Lecture room F1/364

prof. Horst Lenske (Institut für Theoretische Physik, JLU Gießen, and NUMEN collaboration, LNS Catania):
From Nuclear Double Charge Exchange Reactions to Lepton Number Violating Electron Scattering

Abstract:
Lepton number violation (LNV) as underlying neutrinoless nuclear double beta decay (DBD) and equal-charged lepton pair plus di-jet production in ultra-relativistic hadron collisions are expected to deliver the heavily searched for signatures for physics beyond the standard model (BSM). To study the totally unexplored rank-2 nuclear isotensor spectroscopy inherent to DBD independently, peripheral heavy ion double charge exchange (DCE) reactions, as studied in the NUMEN project, are the proper tool. They include sequential (DCSE) and direct (MDCE) processes formally corresponding to two-neutrino and neutrinoless DBD, respectively. DSCE reactions are the perfect tool for isotensor two-particle - two-hole spectroscopy. MDBD leads to pion potentials as surrogates of the neutrino potentials in neutrinoless DBD. Direct probes for LNV are lepton DCE (LDCE) reactions at accelerators, apparently and surprisingly never considered before. Theoretical concepts are discussed, merging into a second-order approach. As a first application total cross sections of ΔL=+2 (e-,e+) reactions on nuclear targets are estimated. At beam energies beyond 10 GeV, cross sections of magnitudes are predicted which might be measurable at existing facilities.

Doctoral colloquium - Janka Boborová (27.10.2025)

Monday 27.10.2025 at 13:10 hod., Lecture room I 9

Janka Boborová:
Comparing abduction algorithms using CATS
Abstract:
Abduction is a fundamental way of reasoning, alongside induction and deduction. It aims to explain observed phenomena by identifying their possible causes (explanations) based on available background knowledge. Although it was long regarded as a non-standard reasoning problem, it has recently attracted increasing attention. It has been applied in various domains such as ontology engineering, debugging and repair, medical and system diagnosis, and multimedia interpretation.
In our work, we focus specifically on ABox abduction, where both observations and explanations are statements about individuals (i.e., facts). Among the existing algorithms for abduction, we concentrate on those that are universally applicable, regardless of the expressivity of the knowledge base. Using a dataset from previous evaluations, we compared several such algorithms employing our experimental abduction solver, CATS, and subsequently implemented and tested a number of optimizations. Currently, we are developing a more comprehensive evaluation dataset of ABox abduction problems to conduct a proper evaluation.

International mini-symposium 2025

An international minisymposium was held at the Faculty od Medicine at Comenius University...

On October 6, 2025, the Faculty of Medicine at Comenius University Bratislava hosted an international mini-symposium with a workshop for medical students and early-career researchers in the field of medical neuroscience.
The event was organized by Associate Professor Ján Bakoš as part of the Enlight+ project, which focuses on advanced education in neurodevelopmental disorders and the use of animal models. During the conference, Professor Daniela Ostatníková, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, introduced the activities and mission of the Academic Center for Autism Research. Among the distinguished guests was Professor Andreas Frick from the University of Bordeaux, France, who delivered a lecture on sensory changes in animals with Fragile X syndrome. Professor Olga Penagarikano from the University of the Basque Country, Spain presented relationship between brain reward systems and autism symptomatology. Additional contributions from guests representing France, Hungary, and Slovakia addressed the pathogenesis of autistic symptoms observed in various animal models of autism as well as in humans.
The event attracted medical students, PhD students in medical neuroscience, experts, and guests from related scientific disciplines. Graduates and PhD students researching neurodevelopmental disorders and autism spectrum conditions, along with young physicians and psychologists, actively participated in the student section and workshop. The workshop was interactive and aimed at developing specific skills, enhancing participants’ abilities to secure grants, and supporting attendance at international events and courses. The conference concluded with awards for the best presentations, given to doctoral candidate María Prieto-Pizarro from Spain and Maren Bindel, a student at the Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University Bratislava.
