Nuclear Seminar - Ivan Sýkora (5.11.2025)

Wednesday 5.11.2025 at 14:00, Lecture room F1/364

doc. RNDr. Ivan Sýkora, PhD.:
Long term monitoring of Bratislava atmosphere aerosol radioactivity
Abstract:
Variations of cosmogenic 7Be, primordial 40K, radiogenic 210Pb and anthropogenic 137Cs in Bratislava air studied during 2001–2024 using a weekly sampling and HPGe gamma-spectrometry are presented. A new sampling device (Senya Snow White), recently installed in our meteorological station was tested and compared with the old sampling system. While 7Be variations were associated with transport of air masses from the lower stratosphere to the ground level air, an inverse trend was observed for 210Pb variations due to infiltration of radon from the soil. The 137Cs activity concentrations (excluding the Chernobyl and Fukushima accidents periods) were decreasing with half-life of 1.9 years, however, during recent years they were almost constant. The increased atmospheric 40K levels were due to soil resuspension and radionuclide transport by winds.

We Succeed in ENLIGHT Grants

Comenius University Bratislava has once again shown that it is an active participant in the...

This year, the ENLIGHT alliance has again earmarked funding to support cooperation among its members. The ENLIGHT Thematic Network and ENLIGHT Incubator Grant calls attracted a record number of applicants: a total of 1,400 academic staff from all 10 partner universities submitted 104 project proposals, representing a 30 percent increase compared to last year. Among the supported projects, CU is the coordinator of one and a partner in three under the ENLIGHT Thematic Network call, and the coordinator of two and a partner in four under the ENLIGHT Incubator Grant call. ENLIGHT Thematic Networks support interdisciplinary academic networks and aim to establish long-term cooperation. ENLIGHT Incubator Grants support joint educational projects (joint programmes, blended mobility, winter/summer schools, joint study programmes, etc.).
“We are very pleased that almost all CU faculties took part in the calls and that the successful projects will be implemented at as many as eight of them. These results show that ENLIGHT is not just an administrative network of universities but a living platform that connects expertise and delivers tangible benefits to society. The success of our academics in the ENLIGHT grant calls confirms Comenius University’s strong position within the alliance and its active contribution to international cooperation,” says CU Vice-Rector for International Relations and ENLIGHT coordinator, Jozef Tancer.
This is further demonstrated by the fact that among all applications submitted under the Incubator Grant call, the project HATCH, coordinated by the CU Faculty of Medicine, received the highest evaluation.

Article by authors from the Institute of IT Law and IP Law published in the prestigious European Journal of Risk Regulation

October 29, 2025

An article entitled “Rethinking Cybersecurity Research Governance: Lessons from the Act on Digital Services?” has been published in the prestigious scientific journal European Journal of Risk Regulation, issued by Cambridge University Press.
The authors of the article are Michal Rampášek and doc. JUDr. Matúš Mesarčík, PhD., LL.M., both affiliated with the Institute of Information Technology Law and Intellectual Property Law at the Faculty of Law, Comenius University in Bratislava.
In the article, the authors examine the legal status and role of cybersecurity researchers in the context of the current European Union regulatory framework. Particular attention is paid to the Digital Services Act, the Cyber Resilience Act and the NIS2 Directive. The article focuses especially on the legal uncertainty surrounding the status of cybersecurity researchers, the conditions for data access and auditing under the DSA, as well as the limits of the so-called vetted researcher model.
The publication highlights the need for a more systematic and sustainable legal framework for cybersecurity research in the EU. The authors argue that although the DSA introduces new instruments of external oversight over very large online platforms, cybersecurity research also requires consideration of more flexible mechanisms, particularly coordinated vulnerability disclosure and bug bounty programmes.

Seminar on Qualitative Theory of Differential Equations - Christopher Morison (6.11.2025)

Thursday 6.11.2025 at 14:00, Lecture room M 223

Christopher Morison:
Somatic mutations accumulate stochastically in cancer cell populations
Abstract:
New distributions of mutational information are measurable thanks to single-cell sequencing technology. I first describe how some of these can be derived from a simple branching process model of neutral evolution. Using the neutral model as a baseline against which one can measure selection, I next consider cancer cells acquiring deleterious antigenic mutations, triggering the immune system, which seeks to eliminate them. Informed by stochastic simulations, I finally discuss what coevolutionary dynamics take place under different regimes of interactions between the immune cells and their cancer prey and how this can inform immunotherapeutic treatments.

Doctoral colloquium - Onoja Monday (3.11.2025)

Monday 3.11.2025 at 13:10 hod., Lecture room I 9

Onoja Monday:
Integrating Ontology and Graph Neural Network for Explainable Malware Detection

Abstract:
Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) are increasingly applied to cybersecurity tasks such as malware detection, intrusion detection, and program analysis, as they effectively model structured program representations and capture relational dependencies beyond flat feature vectors. However, their black-box nature poses challenges in security-critical domains, where analysts require explanations for trust and forensic analysis. This motivates the use of explainable GNNs (XGNNs), which aim to provide interpretable insights into model predictions. In this work, we investigate Relational Graph Convolutional Networks (R-GCNs) for ontology-based malware detection. Proof-of-concept experiments demonstrate that incorporating bidirectional relations through edge reversal significantly improves both predictive accuracy and interpretability. Specifically, R-GCN with edge reversal (RGCN2) achieved 98% accuracy and true positive rate (TPR) on the numeric data subset of the reviewed Ontology - Knowledge Graph Ember dataset with 1000 binary, compared to 67% in baseline models, and delivered 87% fidelity with the Captum explainer. These results highlight the promise of relational GNNs for leveraging semantic structures in ontology-driven cybersecurity, where explainability and robustness are essential.

Seminar of Department of Theoretical Physics - Jacinto P. Neto (11.11.2025)

Tuesday 11.11.2025 at 14:00, Lecture room F2/125

Jacinto P. Neto (Universität Wien & IPP, Brazil & Rio Grande do Norte U.):
Enabling Thermal Dark Matter within the Vanilla ℓµ – ℓτ Model

Abstract:
Thermal dark matter is a compelling setup that has been probed by a multitude of experiments, mostly in the GeV–TeV mass range. The thermal paradigm in the subGeV range is about to experience the same experimental test with the next generation of low-energy accelerators and light dark matter detectors. Motivated by this, we investigate thermal dark matter in the ℓµ – ℓτ and assess how the introduction of a matter-dominated era impacts the parameter that yields the correct relic density. Interestingly, we show that the projected experiments, such as MuSIC, FCC-ee, and LDMX, will probe a large region of the viable parameter space that yields the correct relic density. In the GeV–TeV mass regime, the usual large-scale detectors push the sensitivity. Our work highlights the rich interplay between early-universe dynamics, dark matter phenomenology, and the discovery potential of next-generation experiments.
