The Faculty of Law of Comenius University Establishes a Strategic Partnership with South-Central Minzu University in Wuhan, China
From 11 to 15 November 2025, a delegation of the Faculty of Law of Comenius University in Bratislava (CU) visited the prestigious South-Central Minzu University (SCMU) in Wuhan. The purpose of the visit was to expand international cooperation, strengthen relations with a significant Asian partner institution, and open new opportunities for students, academic staff, and researchers.
The Faculty of Law was represented by:
Prof. Eduard Burda, PhD. (Dean),
Prof. Lívia Trellová, PhD. (Vice-Dean for International Relations),
Assoc. Prof. Peter Lukáčka, PhD., Assoc. Prof. Branislav Fábry, PhD., Assoc. Prof. Katarína Burdová, PhD., JUDr. Zoltán Gyurász, PhD., and JUDr. Sára Kiššová, PhD.
South-Central Minzu University: A Unique Institution Focused on Diversity
Founded in 1951, South-Central Minzu University ranks among the most important Chinese universities with a strong focus on cultural and ethnic diversity. In addition to members of the Han majority, representatives of all 55 officially recognised ethnic minorities in China study at SCMU.
The university is built on the principle of unity in diversity, actively promoting respect for cultural differences while encouraging cooperation and mutual understanding. The university campus embodies this philosophy — students are supported in preserving their cultural traditions while engaging in a shared academic community.
The Department of Law was established in 1996, and the Faculty of Law launched its first undergraduate programme in 1989. SCMU places particular emphasis on high-quality higher education, strong international partnerships, and academic cooperation, as evidenced by its active collaborations with European and Asian universities and its commitment to academic excellence and interdisciplinary research.
The Faculty of Law currently offers a Bachelor’s programme in Law and Intellectual Property Law (LL.B.), as well as seven Master’s programmes in the fields of legal theory, constitutional and administrative law, civil and commercial law, criminal law, procedural law, economic law, and international law.
Two-Day Negotiations: A New Framework for Academic Cooperation
During the visit, the delegation held intensive meetings with the leadership of SCMU’s Faculty of Law, including: Prof. Pan Xongxiang (Dean), Prof. Liao Hua (Vice-Dean),
Ms Sun Xiaoli (Director of the International Relations Office), as well as other academic representatives and members of the university administration.
Discussions focused on the development of specific forms of cooperation, including:
• student and staff mobility programmes,
• joint scientific research projects and academic initiatives,
• short-term and long-term research stays,
• cooperation on conferences, workshops, and summer schools.
Both institutions expressed a strong interest in developing a long-term partnership that will strengthen their position in the international academic community. The second day of meetings concentrated on designing concrete models of academic and research collaboration and preparing future joint research activities.
Engagement with the Academic Life of SCMU
Members of the delegation actively participated in the academic activities of the host institution, including:
•attending a seminar in Constitutional Law taught in English,
• participating in the final round of the university Moot Court competition,
• presenting diplomas to the winning teams, awarded by the Dean and Vice-Dean.
The programme also included two specialised lectures delivered by members of the Slovak delegation:
• JUDr. Zoltán Gyurász, PhD. — The European Approach to IT Law (Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence)
The lecture focused on the European Union’s legal framework governing information technologies, particularly cybersecurity and artificial intelligence. Special attention was given to the EU’s efforts to build a secure and trustworthy digital environment accessible to all actors wishing to operate in the European market.
• JUDr. Sára Kiššová, PhD. — Trade in the European Union
This lecture addressed contemporary challenges of the European internal market and provided a practical explanation of how the EU’s four fundamental freedoms and its common commercial policy operate in practice. Students gained a comprehensive overview of how EU rules influence trade relations, the movement of goods and services, and business activities in the European economic area.
During transitions between scheduled activities, the Slovak academics also had the opportunity to experience a ride in an autonomous vehicle, now a common element of everyday transport in Wuhan.
A Step Toward Strengthening the Global Presence of the Faculty
The visit to SCMU represents a significant milestone in enhancing the international engagement of the Faculty of Law of Comenius University. The new partnership creates opportunities for student mobility, collaborative research, and deeper academic exchange between Slovakia and China.
Through such initiatives, the Faculty continues to build a global network of academic partnerships that foster modern legal education and high-quality research.

On this exceptional occasion, CU Rector Marek Števček expressed his conviction to persevere in the development of critical thinking. "In my opinion, science is first and foremost a conviction. A conviction that it makes sense to explore how and why things work, that it makes sense to examine the world so that we may make it a better place. [...] If science is a certain form of faith, let us believe that the supracritical part of the world has not definitively gone mad, that we will not find the truth with a few clicks on social media governed by the algorithms of our own bubbles, and that artificial intelligence will simply not find the answers for us, but only our own," he stated in his address.
The Rector's Awards for the best dissertation thesis in 2025 were conferred upon:

Seminar of Department of Theoretical Physics - Alessandro Manta (25.11.2025)

Tuesday 25.11.2025 at 14:00, Lecture room F2/125

Alessandro Manta (University of Vienna):
Quantum Spacetimes and Gravity in IKKT matrix model
Abstract:
In this talk I will explain how gravity can be extracted from the IKKT matrix model. IKKT is a non-perturbatively defined model of quantum gravity, which studies quantum dynamics of quantized (fuzzy) spacetimes, represented as matrix configurations. I will explain how the weakly coupled regime of a 4d spacetime with fuzzy extra dimensions contains Einstein-Hilbert gravity at one-loop. Furthermore, for a class solutions of IKKT, Covariant Cosmological Quantum Spacetimes, we study different mechanisms for dynamical stabilization of the extra dimensions.

THE CHURCH IN KOPČANY IS ONE OF THE OLDEST CHURCHES IN CENTRAL EUROPE

The international consortium consisting of seven radiocarbon laboratories dated the church of st....

An international consortium of radiocarbon laboratories from the USA (University of Arizona in Tucson; University of Georgia in Athens), Switzerland (ETH in Zurich), Austria (University of Vienna), the Czech Republic (Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague), Hungary (Institute for Nuclear Research of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Debrecen), and the Department of Nuclear Physics and Biophysics of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics of the Comenius University, dealt with determining the age of the Church of St. Margaret of Antioch in Kopčany. Since the Church was severely damaged several times during its long history and therefore often rebuilt, its age was not exactly known. During the recent reconstruction of the Church there was a chance to search for samples which could be used for radiocarbon dating. Altogether 13 samples (wood, charcoal, mortar and plaster) were collected from the walls of the Church and analyzed using highly sensitive accelerator mass spectrometry. This technique enables us to analyze radiocarbon (14C) even in sub-milligram samples of carbon, which was not possible before using radiometric methods.
The 14C results obtained from the different laboratories, as well as between the different sample types, have been in very good agreement. Resulting the 14C calibrated age of the Church, based on dating a single piece of a wooden levelling rod (diameter of 2 cm) is 774–884 AD (95.4% confidence level), which is in very good agreement with Bayesian modeling result based on dating of wood, charcoal and mortar samples (788–884 AD, 95.4% confidence level). The probability distribution from OxCal calibration shows that 79% of the probability distribution lies in the period before 863 AD, implying that the Church could have been constructed before the arrival of Constantine (St. Cyril) and St. Methodius to Great Moravia. If we take as the terminus post quem the documented date of consecration of the Church in Nitra (828 AD), as a natural assumption that the first church was built in the centre of the Nitra Principality, Bayesian modeling determines the age of the Church in the range of 837–884 AD (95.4% confidence level). Although the 14C results were obtained with very high precision (± 10 years), the specific plateau shape of the calibration curve in the period of interest (as seen in the figure) has caused a wide range of calibrated age.
The radiocarbon-dated Church of St. Margaret of Antioch in Kopčany therefore represents, together with the St. George’s Rotunda in Nitrianska Blatnica (dated to the same time interval; Povinec et al., Radiocarbon 63 (2021) 953–976), probably the oldest standing Christian churches in Central Europe east of Salzburg.

Doctoral colloquium - Pavol Kollár (24.11.2025)

Monday 24.11.2025 at 13:10 hod., Lecture room I 9

Pavol Kollár:
Combinatorial problems -- a place where classical enumeration fails
Abstract:
Combinatorial problems are, by their very nature, interesting and daunting at the same time. These types problems are approachable and can be explained with very little technical background and yet one can ask deep questions that require powerful machinery to approach answers and solutions to such questions.
In this talk we consider two such problems. One considers symmetries of graphs and generalises these concepts to the realm of permutation group theory and so-called "r-regular families of permutations". This project is continued work from previous years and we will report on our progress. The second problem generalises the classical antidictionary problem, where one wishes to distinguish between words that do not contain certain subwords and the ones that do, into two dimensions. This technique developed to tackling the classical antidictionary problem is useful in searching algorithms, especially the ``string searching'' algorithms. We will also see a famous class of graphs, so-called de Bruijn graphs, and how they are related to this two dimensional problem.

JFMED CU Enhances Traditional Anatomy Teaching with a Virtual Dissection Table

The Department of Anatomy at the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University in Martin...

At the Department of Anatomy, students gain their first in-depth understanding of the human body, its structure, and its interconnected systems. While traditional methods such as anatomical models, preserved specimens, and cadaver dissections remain essential, modern technologies offer new and innovative learning opportunities.
“Our approach to teaching anatomy combines time-tested methods with modern tools,” said Assoc. Prof. Desanka Výbohová, MD, PhD, Head of the Department. “Cadaveric dissection still plays an irreplaceable role, offering students real experience with the human body and the chance to develop their manual skills. The virtual dissection table, however, provides new possibilities for interactive, 3D exploration of human anatomy.”
Using digitized cadavers created from real CT and MRI scans, students can examine the entire body—including bones, muscles, internal organs, vascular and nervous systems. The table is used during both practical and dissection classes, where students study anatomy systemically and topographically. They can make virtual cross-sections in various anatomical planes, peel away tissue layers, and compare normal and pathological findings.
“The table offers dynamic, visual presentations of anatomical structures and can be tailored to various levels of learning—from undergraduate students in medical and healthcare programs to postgraduate training for young physicians,” added Assoc. Prof. Výbohová. “Thanks to the wide range of built-in pathological examples and case studies, it supports the development of clinical thinking and encourages active student engagement.”
By combining traditional and digital approaches, JFMED CU provides students with a more engaging, modern, and comprehensive anatomy education.
