Comenius University Rector, Professor Karol Mičieta, and Vice-Rector, Professor Daniela Ostatníková, gave an outline of the study of Romanian at the Department of Romance Studies at the Faculty of Arts and the extent of its tradition. Romanian was the first Romance language to be taught at the faculty; tuition began in 1922. They also provided information on Comenius University’s participation in the Danube Rectors’ Conference, and discussed the possibilities for expanding the partnership between Slovakia and Romania, which are themselves connected by the Danube River.

Ambassador Steluţa Arhire is from the region of Transylvania, which in 2018 will celebrate 100 years of being part of Romania. She suggested that the Comenius University leadership look into working with Babeş-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, which is Romania’s premier university, and meeting with that university’s rector, Professor Ioan-Aurel Pop, who is also a member of the Romanian Academy of Sciences.
