Robert Lukoťka:
Rich nowhere-zero flows on general graphs
Abstract:
A rich k-flow is a nowhere-zero k-flow such that each pair of neighbouring edges has different absolute flow values. We show the following. If a graph G with maximum degree Delta admits a rich k-flow for some k, then it admits a rich (264.Delta-521)-flow. The proof utilizes an idea from Seymour's proof of the 6-flow theorem. Besides this, we will discuss several variations of the notion of rich flow, focusing on complete bipartite and complete graphs.

ENLIGHT Alliance Marks Its Fifth Anniversary in Bratislava

The ENLIGHT Alliance held its annual meeting in Bratislava from 2 to 4 December 2025. It was the...

The formal opening was held on 2 December in CU’s historic Auditorium. “ENLIGHT was born out of a simple yet bold idea: that universities across Europe can work together not only by exchanging students, but also by sharing ideas, courage, and curiosity. Five years later, we are creating joint study programmes and micro-credentials, and supporting genuine mobility – both physical and virtual. Our researchers are working closely together, and students can propose solutions to real societal challenges alongside peers from ten countries,” said CU Rector Marek Števček.
Over the following days, more than 150 participants met in working groups to discuss topics such as the digital campus, lifelong learning, and the role of university alliances in the European Education Area. They assessed the successes achieved during five years of cooperation and the activities planned for the future. One of the plenary lectures was delivered by the Slovak Public Defender of Rights, Róbert Dobrovodský, whose office is a partner of the ENLIGHT Regional Academy.
New President of the Alliance
In Bratislava, Professor Anders Hagfeldt, Rector of Uppsala University, was elected President of the ENLIGHT Alliance. In his new role, he will provide high-level strategic leadership, set and safeguard the alliance’s long-term vision, and ensure that its decisions reflect the concrete work of university teams. He will also represent the alliance in European and political discussions, advocate for its interests beyond the member institutions, and serve as its principal representative. As ENLIGHT President, he chairs the Board of Rectors of the ten member universities and leads the alliance into the next stage of its shared development.
The annual meeting in Bratislava reaffirmed the strong and shared commitment of the ten universities to continue strengthening their cooperation. “The meeting outlined a clear path for the next phase – consolidating joint processes, deepening links between the universities, developing high-quality educational and research initiatives, and increasing ENLIGHT’s impact both within academia and in wider society. The alliance is entering a new period with the ambition of becoming more visible, more efficient, and sustainable in the long term,” said Jozef Tancer, ENLIGHT Coordinator at Comenius University and Vice-Rector for International Relations.
Ordinary Things Theatre Performance and Folk Dancing
Alongside the working agenda, Comenius University arranged social and cultural events for guests from partner universities. Participants enjoyed an experimental, multi-genre performance named Ordinary Things, created and staged specifically for the occasion by the theatre collective Med a prach (Honey and Dust). After the gala dinner in the Moyzes Hall of the Faculty of Arts, the Gymnik folklore ensemble, based at the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport, performed for the foreign guests and offered a short workshop of Slovak folk dances, which encountered great enthusiasm.
“It was an exceptionally inspiring, meaningful, and excellently organised meeting that brought new inspiration and energy to the entire ENLIGHT family,” said Leah Vandeveer of Ghent University, Executive Director of ENLIGHT.
The alliance’s presidency passed from Comenius University to the University of Galway. The next annual meeting will take place on its campus in summer 2026.

Science That Will Not Stay in a Drawer: The People’s Choice Award in the Challenger Science Programme Goes to a Project from the Faculty of Medicine of CU

Bratislava, 2 December 2025: Eleven scientific teams reached the finals of the Challenger Science...

The main prize went to the ElectroChemX team from the Slovak Academy of Sciences for developing a non-toxic surface treatment for metals. Team leader Anna Kityk said the Challenger Science programme had significantly changed how she approaches her work:
“Scientists need to learn to think like entrepreneurs as well. We want to be pioneers who are not only excellent researchers, but also capable of turning ideas into real-world solutions.”
The organisers presented the Young Innovator Award to the HIPA project from the Faculty of Informatics and Information Technologies of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. The team is developing a digital histopathology atlas designed to modernise medical education and speed up the training of healthcare professionals in a rapidly evolving medical environment.
The People’s Choice Award was won by the NEUROPRINT project from the Faculty of Medicine of Comenius University Bratislava. The research team uses fingerprint analysis to enable the early detection of conditions such as autism in children. Co-author Klaudia Kyselicová highlighted the practical orientation of the programme: “We received valuable, hands-on feedback from colleagues with real experience in building a business. Because the workshops and lectures were designed specifically for scientists, they were extremely effective. You could see the difference in the participants - even over such a short period, their progress was remarkable.”
Growing Interest in the Challenger Science Programme Among Researchers
Because of the high standard of the submitted projects, the expert jury decided to expand the number of finalists from the originally planned ten teams to eleven. “This year’s quality was outstanding,” said Palo Luka, member of the jury and COO of ESET, whose foundation is a partner of the event. “Turning the results of fundamental research into practical solutions that improve people’s lives is one of science’s most important tasks, and Challenger plays a vital role in making that happen.” He added: “Perhaps the next ESET is emerging in this group - and that would be wonderful to see.”
The programme is built on close cooperation with universities, which provide the research environment for participants and naturally connect academia with the innovation ecosystem. Without this support, the programme could not function. Universities play a key role in ensuring that commercialisation becomes a natural part of an academic career.
During the evening, successful Slovak scientist and CTO of the Glycanostics company, Tomáš Bertók, pointed out that many scientific ideas in Slovakia never move beyond publications or grant projects. Because of the time and workload involved, researchers often lack the capacity to pursue practical applications and need support to do so. “Seeing Challenger projects that are clearly market-oriented and address real needs is incredibly motivating for me,” he said. “Networking is just as important - that is one of the programme’s greatest strengths.”
Entrepreneurial science can become a reality if it receives the right kind of support. Challenger Science aims, over the long term, to help remove barriers in Slovak research, strengthen the commercialisation of science, and create favourable conditions for successful technology and innovation transfer. The programme shows that Slovak scientists have the potential not only to make discoveries, but also to build new solutions and new companies - proving that good ideas should not stay in a drawer, but be put into action.
The event is organised by the Civitta consulting company in cooperation with the ESET Foundation. Comenius University Bratislava is the community partner of the Challenger Science programme.

Nuclear Seminar - Adriana Dohnalová (10.12.2025)

Wednesday 10.12.2025 at 14:00, Lecture room F1/364

Mgr. Adriana Dohnalová:
Jet energy scale and resolution calibration from hadronic W boson decay in top-antitop quark pair production events

Abstract:
Searches for BSM processes, as well as SM measurements, often involve jets in their final states. Consequently, precise jet measurements are essential for many ATLAS analyses, and jet-calibration–related systematic uncertainties are among the dominant ones. To bring the reconstructed jet momentum as close as possible to its true value, a sequence of calibrations is applied, ending in in situ calibrations that correct the residual differences between data and simulation. These in situ correction factors are derived using a well-calibrated reference object recoiling against the jets.
In this talk, I will present a new measurement that exploits top-antitop quark pair production events in the single-lepton decay channel, where one W boson decays into two jets. The resulting correction factors will be combined with existing in situ calibrations to further improve the precision of the ATLAS jet energy scale and resolution.

Seminar of Graph Theory - Edita Mačajová (4.12.2025)

Thursday 4.12.2025 at 9:50, Lecture room M 213

Edita Mačajová:
Rich nowhere-zero flows
Abstract:
A graph admits a nowhere-zero k-flow if its edges can be oriented and assigned values the set {1, 2, ..., k-1} in such a way that, at every vertex, the sum of the incoming values equals the sum of the outgoing values. The concept of a nowhere-zero flow is one of the most important concepts in graph theory and has been studied for more than half a century. In this talk, we introduce -- for cubic graphs -- the notion of a *rich* nowhere-zero k-flow: one where the three values at every vertex are pairwise distinct. We conjecture that a cubic graph admits a nowhere-zero k-flow if and only if it admits a rich nowhere-zero (k+1)-flow. We prove this conjecture for k=3 and k=4, that is, for bipartite and 3-edge-colourable cubic graphs, respectively. Furthermore, we show that every bridgeless cubic graph admits a rich nowhere-zero 11-flow and conjecture that 6 in place of 11 will do.
This is a joint work with Karolína Pisoňová.

Doctoral colloquium - Ján Pastorek (8.12.2025)

Monday 8.12.2025 at 13:10 hod., Lecture room I 9

Ján Pastorek:
Deeply Asymmetric Structures
Abstract:
What are symmetries? Symmetries are typically understood globally: an object is symmetric if it has nontrivial automorphisms—transformations preserving the whole structure. It is well-established that almost all graphs are asymmetric, possessing no "global" symmetries. However, global asymmetry does not imply a lack of structure. Every graph exhibits rich "local" symmetries, which we study using isomorphisms between induced subgraphs, known as partial automorphisms.
How far can graphs be from having global symmetries? We investigate this question through the measure of asymmetric depth of graphs defined through the order of the domain of the largest non-trivial partial automorphism. We will report on our progress from previous years. Earlier, we established a new, tight upper bound for the asymmetric depth of any graph. We proved that any graph achieving this bound must be a strongly regular graph. We implemented a parallel algorithm on high-performing cluster Clara for checking asymmetric depth on a high-performance cluster. Using this algorithm, we identified an asymmetric conference graph on 37 vertices that attains this bound, thereby proving its tightness.
Given that most real-world networks such as brain networks are sparse due to connection costs, we have begun extending this investigation to sparse graphs where we can improve the general upper bound. For planar graphs, we established a tight upper bound by finding duals of asymmetric fullerenes.
