Two Comenius University Scientists are Nominated for the Slovak Woman of the Year Award
On 20 February 2018, the Slovenka weekly magazine, RTVS, and the Slovak National Theatre showcased successful Slovak women who have been nominated for the Slovak Women of the Year Award for 2018. The twenty-eight nominees included Associate Professor Soňa Fraňová from Comenius University’s Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in Martin and Associate Professor Alexandra Kolenová from the Faculty of Medicine.

Associate Professor Soňa Fraňová, who was nominated in the category of science and research, is the director of the Department of Pharmacology at the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine and the head of the Experiment Pharmacology Laboratory at the Martin Centre for Biomedicine at the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine. She leads a team dealing with projects focusing on treating diseases of the respiratory system, particularly allergic bronchial asthma, in experimental conditions. She is the author and co-author of many research publications with a considerable international impact. She is also the chairwoman of the Slovak Pharmacological Society.
Associate Professor Alexandra Kolenová was nominated in the category of Health Care. She is the head of the Department of Paediatric Haematology and Oncology at the Faculty of Medicine at Comenius University and the National Institute of Children’s Diseases in Bratislava. She is an internationally recognized paediatric oncologist and works towards improvements on treatment and the conditions under which treatment is provided. She is the guarantor of paediatric haematology and oncology and the national coordinator for the treatment of acute leukaemia in children. In 2017 she was one of those recognized in the area of top innovations in health care for her targeted treatment of rare diseases.
The nominees will be recognized in eight categories: Business and Management, Art and Culture, Media and Communication, Science and Research, Education and Support of Young Talent, Health Care, Sport, and Charity. In addition, the nomination committee will present the Absolute Slovak Woman of the Year as well as the Exceptional Award for Lifelong Achievement for Slovakia.
The winners in each category will be decided by readers of Slovenka magazine alongside the audience of RTVS in the form of SMS voting, coupons, and Internet voting at www.slovenkaroka.sk. Voting began on 26 February and will run through to 1 June. The names of the winners will be made public on 4 June 2018 at a gala event which will traditionally take place at the historical building of the Slovak National Theatre.
