RECTOR WELCOMED THE WORLD CHAMPIONS
On Thursday, 24 January 2019, the Rector of Comenius University (CU) in Bratislava, Professor Karol Mičieta, welcomed the student athletes from Comenius University.
The Comenius University athletes achieved international success – they took home gold medals from the 4th World InterUniversities Championships held from 14 to 18 November 2018 in Barcelona. More than 100 students represented CU in Spain: 46 athletes from the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports at CU (FPES CU), 41 students from the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics at CU (FMPI CU), 12 students from the Faculty of Management (FM CU) and one representative from each the Faculty of Pharmacy at CU, the Faculty of Medicine at CU and the Faculty of Arts at CU. The students competed in various sports – from football, futsal, basketball, volleyball, tennis, table tennis, badminton, cheerleading to swimming and chess.
“78 universities competed in this year’s championships, which is 12 more than in 2017 when we ranked 6th in the overall rankings. We set the goal this year to win the whole tournament as a university, which is why we increased the number of students from FPES CU in our team. Dr Ľubor Tománek was particularly instrumental in the process. Even though we did not manage to win in the individual sports, when all the points for the performances in the individual sports were counted, we, as a university, stood atop the highest step on the podium, after all. Together we managed to score 43 points. The University of West Bohemia in Pilsen scored 6 points lower than we did,” summarized Dr Martin Dovičák from FMPI CU. He was the one leading the winning team of CU that managed to beat the competition of 2600 athletes from three different continents.
The Comenius University Rector congratulated the members of our successful team for their fantastic achievement and thanked them for representing both Comenius University and Slovakia.
