RNDr. Ondrej Šauša, CSc. (Institute of Physics SAS, KJCH PriF UK):
Fundamentals of Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS)
Abstract:
The first part will present basic facts about positron annihilation in a material environment, about the formation of a bound state of an electron and a positron (positronium) in insulators and the use of positronium in the study of the free volume of porous materials. Experimental devices for measuring the lifetimes of positrons and positronium will be discussed, from simple coincidence scintillation systems to complicated devices such as slow positron beams and positron microscopes. Possible outputs from typical annihilation experiments will be shown, which provide unique information about the microstructure of the studied substances.
and
Ing. Helena Švajdlenková, PhD. (Polymer Institute SAS, KJCH PriF UK):
The use of PALS in polymer chemistry
Abstract:
In the second part, there will be a presentation of specific outputs from annihilation experiments in the field of polymer chemistry. Examples will include the study of the microstructure of dimethacrylates used in dental medicine, as well as the preparation of epoxides using frontal polymerization.

CU bridges science and practice: New nuclear-focused programme and discussion on the future of teacher education

Bratislava, 13–14 April 2026: The week at Comenius University Bratislava opened with high-level...

This week, two significant events took place at Comenius University, demonstrating the integration of theory and practice in science and education.
Presentation of a new joint study programme of FMPI and FNS
At the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics (FMPI CU), the delegation was received by Dean Daniel Ševčovič and Vice-Rector for Science and PhD Studies Jozef Masarik. The programme began with presentations from the Department of Nuclear Physics and Biophysics (FMPI CU) and the Department of Nuclear Chemistry of the Faculty of Natural Sciences (FNS CU), both unique within Slovakia. University management then introduced a new joint bachelor’s study programme of FMPI and FNS, Nuclear Analytical and Diagnostic Methods.
Designed with a strong professional orientation, the programme reflects labour market demand and the STEP platform. It will train highly qualified specialists in environmental safety and radiation protection, nuclear energy (including fuel management and safety monitoring), as well as healthcare and pharmacy, covering areas such as biomedical physics, radiopharmacy, nuclear medicine and diagnostics.
The visit continued at the Department of Nuclear Chemistry of the FNS CU, this time with Rector Marek Števček in attendance, accompanied by Vice-Rector for Education and Social Affairs Eva Viglašová, Vice-Rector for External Relations Radomír Masaryk and departmental representatives. Discussions focused on technical infrastructure and the integration of theory with practical training. “I am pleased that Comenius University plays a key role in educating experts in this strategically important field, and proud that two leading specialists in nuclear science are part of the university’s leadership,” said the Rector Marek Števček.
Vice-Rector Eva Viglašová noted, “Comenius University Bratislava is the only university in Slovakia offering study programmes in nuclear physics and nuclear chemistry. It is therefore essential to build on the long-standing work of these departments, strengthen their cooperation and connect academia more effectively with external partners and stakeholders.”
The future of teacher education and mobile phone regulation in schools
On Monday (13 April 2026) afternoon, the mathematics pavilion at FMFI CU hosted a meeting of the Association for Teacher Preparation and Education. The discussion focused on key developments in Slovak education.
The main topics included:

transformation of practical training in teacher education

role of faculty schools and facilities

research within a national development project examining the effectiveness of mobile phone regulation in primary schools.

Taken together, the two meetings underscored the central role of Comenius University in preparing experts: whether in nuclear safety or in the modern training of future teachers.

Seminar on Qualitative Theory of Differential Equations - Christopher Morison (16.4.2026)

Thursday 16.4.2026 at 14:00, Lecture room M 223

Christopher Morison:
Stochastic modelling of reaction kinetics of ryanodine receptors
Abstract:
Calcium-mediated calcium release, via ion channels called ryanodine receptors (RyRs), is critical for cardiac cell excitation. RyRs have several conformational states, including open, closed and inactivated; transitions between these depend on nearby ion concentrations. Recently, Zahradníková and other colleagues at SAV presented a structurally-informed thermodynamic model for this system (Zahradníková et al., 2025, PLOS Comp Bio). In collaboration with them, we are developing a continuous-time Markov chain model to study the kinetic behaviour of RyRs.
This presentation will introduce ongoing work with Anna Hlubinová and Pavol Bokes.

Positive Mid-Term Review Confirms ENLIGHT’s Progress

Since November 2023, Comenius University Bratislava has been participating, alongside nine other...

"ENLIGHT confirms its strategic importance for the future of European higher education while providing a concrete framework for deeper cooperation between universities,” said CU Rector Marek Števček. The alliance has established robust governance and project structures with active involvement from both staff and students, while also advancing work on a shared legal framework through the AISBL. The development of the inter-university campus, support for mobility through the Stepping Stones initiative, and the creation of new knowledge within thematic networks and the T&L Hub have also been highlighted as key achievements.
The project offers students flexible pathways for international study, supported by seamless credit recognition across its network of ten partner universities. Opportunities range from traditional semester exchanges to virtual mobility, blended learning formats, short-term stays and lifelong learning. Increasing student participation, the continuity of the student network, and the systematic transfer of knowledge and engagement between successive generations of student leaders stand out among the alliance’s strengths.
Although challenges remain—particularly in legislation, IT infrastructure and the development of joint study programmes—the project has demonstrated its capacity to adapt and move forward effectively. ENLIGHT is also making a significant contribution to shaping the European Higher Education Area, especially in mobility, cooperation and recognition, and has the potential to serve as a model of good practice. The report recommends building on the results achieved, further strengthening partnerships, and continuing the systematic development of activities that underpin the alliance’s long-term success.
