COMENIUS UNIVERSITY HAS UNDERTAKEN PREVENTIVE MEASURES
Bratislava, 5 March 2020: This morning the Faculty of Medicine reported a case of a foreign student showing symptoms of an infectious disease. Therefore, the faculty immediately called the emergency services. For preventive reasons, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Professor Juraj Šteňo, halted teaching at the faculty with immediate effect until 12 pm on Monday 9 March to allow time for the cause of the student's symptoms to be determined. Time off from work has been granted to both students and employees.
Given the presence of the coronavirus in other countries, Comenius University is taking the situation seriously and therefore took this safety measure to avoid even the slightest risk.
As the university with the largest number of students in Slovakia, Comenius University is aware of the responsibility it has towards both students and employees. On Monday 2 March 2020, a meeting of the working group for monitoring, evaluation and taking measures against the coronavirus was held at the university. The members of the working group are renowned experts from the fields of medicine, infectious diseases, and virology, as well as the directors of both Comenius University dormitories.
Several measures have been taken in order to improve health protection and the prevention of infection. The university has distributed disinfectant, increased disinfection rates, and disseminated leaflets on ways to reduce the risk of infection in common areas and sanitary facilities as well as in front of classrooms and in dormitories.
The situation is being monitored continuously and more information will be provided in a responsible manner as new facts come to light.
