Our Students Celebrated Norwegian Constitution Day

On Sunday, May 17, the Kingdom of Norway celebrated its “birthday.” On this day, the entire country...

Norwegian Constitution Day is one of the most important holidays in Norway, and it is also regularly celebrated by our international students in Martin.
The celebration traditionally had a friendly atmosphere. Students gathered in the pedestrian zone and, despite unfavorable weather, set off on a march through the city accompanied by music. Several female students wore the traditional costume – the bunad – which varies by region. The celebrations featured decorations in national colors, Norwegian flags, delicious food, and a great mood throughout.
Norwegian Constitution Day is unique in that it is cheerful, colorful, and focused on children and community rather than military displays. That is why it is considered one of the most joyful national holidays in the world. Each year, students also invite representatives of the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine to join them and enjoy the festive atmosphere together.

The program also included demonstration teaching sessions at FTVŠ UK, which showcased the faculty’s approach to sports training and coaching education, as well as its readiness to adapt to modern trends in education.

During working meetings, the partners evaluated the current status of the project and confirmed that most cooperation conditions have already been agreed upon. Following the completion of remaining technical and administrative requirements, the signing of the agreement establishing the joint study program is expected by the beginning of summer.

The program is planned to be delivered as a double degree study, within which graduates will receive diplomas from both partner universities. Its launch is scheduled for the 2027/2028 academic year. The Finnish side views the initiative as an extension of an existing study program, while the Slovak side is expected to complete the accreditation process planned for autumn 2026.

The Slovak Ice Hockey Federation will also participate in the collaboration, as it has long supported the development and modernization of ice hockey coaching education. The partners also emphasized the need to strengthen the practical component of instruction and to intensify cooperation with ice hockey clubs. All parties agreed that high-quality coach education is a key prerequisite for increasing the competitiveness of smaller hockey nations in the international environment.
In the future, cooperation between the universities should not be limited to student exchange but should also include faculty mobility and the development of joint research activities. The planned program represents a significant step in the internationalization of sports education and in bridging academic environments with elite and youth sports practice.

Doctoral colloquium - Thakar Mayur Pramod (25.5.2026)

Monday 25.5.2026 at 13:10, Lecture room I 9

Thakar Mayur Pramod:
Literature Review and Research Directions in Trustworthy AI for Medical Imaging
Abstract:
Artificial intelligence has become increasingly important in medical imaging applications such as image segmentation, classification, localization, and computer-assisted diagnosis. Although recent deep learning approaches have achieved high performance across multiple medical imaging tasks, several challenges still limit their reliability and broader clinical adoption. Current research highlights important issues related to explainability, robustness, annotation quality, model generalization, and trustworthiness in AI-assisted medical systems.
This presentation summarizes the initial literature review conducted in the area of trustworthy AI for medical imaging. The review focused on understanding common deep learning workflows used in medical image analysis, including preprocessing, region of interest localization, segmentation, classification, and evaluation methodologies. Particular attention was given to explainable AI approaches, segmentation architectures such as U-Net and nnU-Net, transformer-based models, and hybrid deep learning frameworks applied in CT and CBCT imaging studies.
The reviewed literature indicates that while many existing models report high quantitative performance using metrics such as Dice score, IoU, and classification accuracy, several open research problems remain insufficiently addressed. These include limited dataset availability, annotation inconsistency, lack of robustness across different imaging conditions, and limited validation of explainability methods for real clinical use.
Based on these observations, the presentation outlines possible future research directions related to trustworthy and explainable AI systems in medical imaging, with a particular interest in model reliability, preprocessing workflows, segmentation robustness, and interpretable deep learning methods for clinical applications.

Seminar of Graph Theory - Matúš Matok (21.5.2026)

Thursday 21.5.2026 at 9:50, Lecture room M 213

Matúš Matok:
Lonely edges in cubic graphs
Abstract:
The notion of a perfect matching, i.e., a 1-regular spanning subgraph—a set of disjoint edges covering all vertices of a given graph—is a well studied subject in graph theory. Already in 1891, Petersen proved that each edge of a bridgeless cubic graph can be covered by a perfect matching. We say that an edge e is matching double covered if there exist two distinct perfect matchings containing e. Otherwise, e is said to be lonely. If all edges of a graph are matching double covered, so is the graph. A graph G is Klee if it is the complete graph on 4 vertices or it is obtained from another Klee graph by the operation of replacing a vertex with a triangle. This operation is denoted as G ↑ v for some vertex v ∈ V(G) of G. All Klee graphs are therefore 3-connected and planar. The classes of Klee graphs with more than three lonely edges have been characterized by Goedgebeur [1] et al.
Wedefineanauxiliary structure called a decomposition tree which is a well-defined object with respect to a lonely edge e ∈ E(G) of a graph G. With the help of decomposition trees, we can argue about loneliness of e in G ↑ v for all vertices of G, giving us both positive and negative certificates of this status. This allows us to characterize all graphs with one or two lonely edges, hence completing the characterization of cubic graphs with lonely edges.

Seminar of Department of Theoretical Physics - Noel Vincze (26.5.2026)

Tuesday 26.5.2026 at 14:00, Lecture room F2/125

Noel Vincze (Institute of Physics, Slovak Academy of Sciences):
Topological neutrinos and their cosmic consequences
Abstract:
In this seminar, we present a novel way to reinterpret the neutrino. Our main focus is on the topological quantity associated with the electroweak anomaly. Integrating out the gauge and fermion fields, except or the neutrinos, we are left with an effective vertex similar to the 'tHooft vertex for quarks. Then, using the gap equation, we generate the neutrino condensate, which, in turn, determines the Majorana mass of neutrinos. The model's predictions are staggering: it provides a clear physical explanation for neutrino mass, mixing, and $CP$ violation and, on the cosmological scale, yields deviations from the established result. Moreover, the model provides a clear identity for neutrinos: they are Majorana particles, and their nature is enforced by the electroweak vacuum’s topology. These topological neutrinos have very specific cosmic consequences such as a first order topological phase transition, softening the initial quark gluon plasma in the early Universe this deviation from the standard equation of state, and more importantly we establish a connection between dark energy and the dineutrino condensate. The procedure is quite straightforward: we take the neutrino condensate and simply plug it into the Einstein Field Equations. Then we discover the relation between dark energy neutrino mass, which were already hypothesised, and instanton suppression, which we use to show that the three-flavour generation of the Universe is a topological necessity and provides a reason for the stability of it.

CU Bratislava introduces a new study program in hockey coaching

Officials from Comenius University Bratislava and representatives of its Faculty of Physical...

A delegation from a Finnish university visited the premises of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports at Comenius University, where talks continued on a joint degree programme in ice hockey coaching. The partners agreed that most of the terms of cooperation had already been settled and that, once the remaining technical details are finalized, the agreement on the study programme could be signed by the end of May this year.
“With the Ice Hockey World Championship just around the corner, we all know the old saying — every Slovak is a hockey coach. But what we truly need are real professionals in the field of coaching. That is why I am extremely pleased that we have managed to establish cooperation with experts from both the Slovak and international sports community. The Faculty of Physical Education and Sports at Comenius University has been developing sporting talent for decades, so it is only natural that it should also educate the people who will guide these talents on their path to victory,” said Comenius University Rector Marek Števček at the opening of the meeting.
The programme will operate as a double degree scheme, meaning graduates will receive diplomas from both universities, and is expected to launch in the 2027/2028 academic year. The Finnish side described the project as an extension of an existing study programme, while the Slovak side still faces an accreditation process, which the university expects to complete by autumn 2026.
The Slovak Ice Hockey Federation will also join the project
The partners aim to strengthen the practical component of the programme, including professional internships and cooperation with clubs. According to participants at the meeting, linking university education, the national sports federation and hands-on practice could create a unique model of sports education in Central Europe.
Representatives from both countries also discussed differences between the Slovak and Finnish systems of coach and youth development. They agreed that high-quality coach education is one of the key prerequisites for smaller hockey nations to remain competitive against major powers such as the United States and Canada.
In the future, cooperation between the universities is not expected to be limited to student exchanges alone. The partners also plan to develop staff mobility and joint research activities. The Finnish representatives described the planned programme as a significant opportunity for both countries, which share a long-standing hockey tradition and a common interest in advancing sports education.
