VER 2026: CU CONFIRMS THE OUTSTANDING QUALITY OF ITS RESEARCH

The VER 2026 assessment, conducted by the Ministry of Education, Research, Development and Youth of the Slovak Republic, evaluated creative outputs, the societal impact of research and the quality of the creative environment. The assessment involved 169 independent international experts from 23 countries, who evaluated Slovak public higher education institutions and public research institutions. CU’s result is significantly above the national average increase in quality, which, according to available data, stood at approximately 40%. The university has thus built on its long-standing tradition of high-quality research and confirmed that its scientific and artistic outputs are of growing international significance. “The results of the VER 2026 assessment confirm that Comenius University is one of the key pillars of Slovak science. We see them both as recognition of the work of our researchers and as a commitment to further strengthening the quality of research, its societal impact and international cooperation,” said CU Rector Marek Števček. The university saw a marked improvement in the quality of its outputs particularly in law, psychology, medicine, pharmacy and the natural sciences. Under VER 2026’s new criterion assessing the societal and practical impact of research, international experts gave the highest marks to the links between hospital practice and university research at CU’s medical faculties and Faculty of Pharmacy. The Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics of CU also confirmed its strong research performance and high-quality research environment. It received the highest score for excellence in scientific publications, with more than 50% of its papers reaching the highest international standard, and it also performed strongly thanks to its well-established doctoral schools. “The results of the assessment clearly show that the strength of our faculties lies not only in the sheer volume of top-level publications, but above all in their tangible contribution to society. It is clear that the high quality of our academic environment enables us to involve young researchers effectively in international projects while they are still studying, successfully linking top-level science with the training of a new generation of experts,” said Jozef Masarik, CU Vice-Rector for Science and Doctoral Studies. CU among the leaders of excellent science in Slovakia The VER 2026 assessment does not create a single simplified ranking, but quality profiles in 28 research areas. CU’s results demonstrate the university’s strength across a broad spectrum of disciplines, from the humanities and social sciences to the natural sciences and mathematics. The university is also among the institutions that make a significant contribution to the overall quality of Slovakia’s research environment. The results of VER 2026 will also be an important basis for funding research and artistic activity at public higher education institutions. For the public, applicants for study and university partners, they provide a more transparent picture of the quality of Slovak research institutions.

CU IMPROVES ITS POSITION IN THE QS WORLD UNIVERSITY RANKINGS

The world’s top universities are Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Imperial College London and Stanford University. Five other Slovak universities also appear in the ranking. Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava is ranked 951st–1000th, while the Technical University of Košice and Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice share 1001st–1200th place. The University of Žilina and the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra are both ranked 1201st–1400th. The QS WUR assesses universities using nine weighted indicators: academic reputation (30%), citations per faculty (20%), employer reputation (15%), employment outcomes (5%), international research network (5%), international student ratio (5%), international faculty ratio (5%), faculty-student ratio (10%) and sustainability (5%). In the employment outcomes indicator, CU rose to 125th place. The QS World University Rankings are among the world’s leading university rankings and have assessed universities since 2004. This year’s ranking lists 1,504 top higher education institutions from 106 locations worldwide. “I am pleased that Comenius University has improved its position in the QS WUR, even though rankings do not always objectively reflect the quality of an institution. This news follows our excellent result in the periodic VER (Verification of Excellence in Research) assessment. Any improvement is primarily due to the work of our university community, for which we try to create the best possible conditions,” said CU Rector Marek Števček Comenius University Bratislava is the only Slovak university to appear in all major university rankings. In the QS World University Rankings 2027, it ranked 662nd. In the 2025 Round University Ranking, it is ranked 475th. CU placed 748th in the 2026 Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), putting it among the top 3.6% of universities worldwide. The ARWU ranking, also known as the Shanghai Ranking, placed it 901st–1000th. In the prestigious Best Global Universities ranking, CU is ranked 806th overall and 299th in physics. SCImago ranks the university 3327th. In the National Taiwan University Rankings (NTU Ranking), CU is ranked 951st–1000th overall and 351st–400th worldwide in physics. In MosIUR 2024, The Three University Missions ranking, it is ranked 257th, while THE Impact Rankings place it 601st–800th. THE World University Rankings rank CU 1201st–1500th. World University Ranking RankPro placed CU 181st. In the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), CU is ranked 301st–400th in physics and 401st–500th in psychology. The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 rank CU 701st–850th in medicine and 601st–675th in physics. In the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2026, CU is ranked joint 824th.

Univerzita v Miškovci, v spolupráci s CEA, ponúka jednoročné LLM programy v anglickom jazyku, obsahovo a personálne zamerané na záujemcov zo stredo- a východoeurópskeho regiónu v oblastiach práv dieťaťa a ľudských práv. Programy si kladú za cieľ sprostredkovať právne vzdelanie s komparatívnym zameraním a hlbším oboznámením sa s problematikou rodinného práva/práv dieťaťa a ľudských práv vo vybraných krajinách regiónu.

Ponúkame dva programy: International and Comparative Children's Rights a Human Rights and Rule of Law. Central European Academy ponúka študentom, ktorí budú prítomní na trojdňovom prezenčnom programe raz v zimnom a raz v letnom semestri (+ na obhajobe záverečnej práce v letnom semestri), úhradu školného aj štipendium na náhradu nákladov súvisiacich s cestou a pobytom v Budapešti na týchto programoch. Týmto študentom teda v súvislosti so štúdiom nevzniknú žiadne náklady.

RUNTIME VERIFICATION FOR DETECTING CYBER-PHYSICAL ATTACKS
Abstract:
Runtime Verification (RV) is a lightweight yet rigorous technique that serves as a practical complement to traditional exhaustive formal verification methods, such as model checking, testing and theorem proving, especially when dealing with complex or large-scale systems. Rather than depending on a detailed, fine-grained model of the system (for instance, a low-level re-implementation down to individual instructions), RV focuses on observing and analyzing the actual execution traces produced by the running system. These traces are then checked against a formal specification that defines the expected (or forbidden) behavior. One key strength of this approach is that RV delivers accurate insights into the system’s real runtime behavior, by-passing the challenges and potential inaccuracies associated with manually creating comprehensive models in a dedicated modeling language. Runtime verification is the basis for concepts dealing with observed faults and cyberattacks on a system. Verification comprises all techniques suitable for showing that a system satisfies its specification. Runtime Verification enables reacting to faults before they become failures at the time of execution. This enables applications of runtime verification techniques that other verification techniques cannot support. Runtime verification can now be seen as the discipline of computer science that deals with the study, development, and application of verification techniques that allow checking whether a run of a system under scrutiny satisfies or violates a given correctness property. The main purpose of this study is to review previous literature on Runtime Verification and to develop a robust Runtime Verification framework that will detect cyber-physical attacks, prevent them, and ensure the safety and liveliness of a system in operation. CU holds talks with representatives of Università degli Studi di Teramo

The Università degli Studi di Teramo delegation was led by Rector Christian Corsi, accompanied by Federico Carli, Adviser to the Rector for International Relations. CU was represented by Rector Marek Števček, Vice-Rector for Quality and Development Viera Štvrtinová, Vice-Rector for Science and Doctoral Studies Jozef Masarik, and Vice-Rector for External Relations Radomír Masaryk. Università degli Studi di Teramo is a public university located in the Abruzzo region of Italy. Its main areas of focus include law, economics, political science, communication, biotechnology, food science and veterinary medicine. During the meeting, representatives of both universities presented their institutions and explored opportunities for cooperation in areas where their academic interests overlap. The discussions focused in particular on biotechnology, environmental research, medicine, psychology, law and doctoral studies, as well as on support for academic mobility and joint research activities. The participants also discussed opportunities to develop cooperation under the Erasmus+ programme, including student and staff exchanges and support for doctoral education. They also considered the preparation of a memorandum of understanding that would provide a framework for future joint activities in education and research. The meeting confirmed the shared interest of both universities in developing mutual contacts and identifying new opportunities for cooperation.
