CU’s High-Tech Pavilion received the 2023 Building of the Year award
The new High-Tech Pavilion of Comenius University Bratislava received the coveted Building of the Year award for 2023 in the category Application of science and research in building design and construction. The Pavilion project representatives received the award on 21 March 2024 during a gala evening, which was broadcast live by the Slovak Radio and Television (RTVS).
CU’s High-Tech Pavilion was constructed as part of the ACCORD (Advancing University Capacity and Competence in Research, Development and Innovation) project. A key investment of the project, the pavilion is the result of a cooperation between Comenius University and the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava (STU), and the first such investment of the Faculty in the last 50 years.
With a floor area of almost 1,800 square metres (nearly 20,000 square feet), the pavilion will be used by the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics of Comenius University Bratislava (FMPI). The building contains cutting edge technologies which will enable top research, particularly in the fields of nanotechnology and advanced materials.
The pavilion is located in the existing Mlynská dolina university campus in Karlova Ves, Bratislava. The building is split into two functional units – a two-story laboratory unit containing the latest equipment which was also procured under the ACCORD project, and a three-story conference and teaching unit with lecture rooms and a new auditorium that seats 90. The two units are connected by a two-story glass-clad, transparent vestibule.
The building was designed by the architect Ján Majerský and built by KAMI PROFIT, s.r.o. owned by Milín Kaňuščák. "On behalf of our faculty, I would like to thank Professor Peter Kúš, who was CU’s and the faculty's coordinator on this project, for his great work and enthusiasm,’ said Daniel Ševčovič, dean of FMPI. "I would like to thank all of our staff who participated in the development and outfitting of the High-Tech Pavilion, which is a part of an ongoing modernization of the University's research infrastructure,’ adds Comenius University Rector Marek Števček.
The Building of the Year is a national competition whose goal is to reward high-quality construction and development and to promote quality in the construction sector of Slovakia. This year a jury of experts presented awards to laureates in ten categories, and five buildings received awards based on a public vote.
