By: CU Public Relations Office
Guest: Timothy Snyder, moderator: Martin M. Šimečka.
The far right has risen from the ashes of history; it is spreading hatred around the world alongside its promises of closed borders and limitations of cooperation and the movement of people. It has spread from Slovakia all the way to the United States and is gaining political power through elections. Trump, Le Pen, Salvini, Okamura, Orbán, and Kotleba are all redrawing the political map and escalating conflicts in society. Where does the support for this movement come from? Why is their form of politics so successful? How important are fake news, hybrid wars, and Russia in the rise of the far right? Are there any historical parallels with the present day? Answers to these questions will be given by Professor Timothy Snyder, one of the world’s most renowned contemporary historians, a famous writer and teacher, and a specialist on the history of Central and Eastern Europe.
From the United States, Timothy Snyder is a writer, historian, and professor at Yale University specializing in the history of Central and Eastern Europe and the Holocaust. He is the author of a lot of publications. His books “Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin”, “On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century”, and “Black Earth: The Holocaust as History and Warning” have all received many prizes, including the Ralph Waldo Emerson Award for the most significant contributions to the humanities and the Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thought. In addition to writing books and essays and lecturing at university, Snyder is an active commentator on the current political situation. He often points out potential future problems, such as in the abovementioned “On Tyranny”, which is his latest work. He is currently working on a book about Ukraine, which will examine its history as well as the current crisis. The One World festival will see Snyder discuss the current political situation in Eastern Europe and analyse the individual steps of V4 nations which pose a threat to the level of democracy in the region.
This event will take place in English with simultaneous translation into Slovak being provided.
Entry to the event is free.
