COMENIUS UNIVERSITY HONOURED ORGANISERS OF STARMUS FESTIVAL

Bratislava, 16 May 2024: Yesterday, Gold Medals of Comenius University were presented to...

Astrophysicist Garik Israelian and musician Brian May, known from the band Queen, who also holds a Ph.D. in astrophysics, were personally present to accept the Gold Medal of Comenius University from its Rector for their outstanding lifelong contribution to the promotion and popularisation of science, and for supporting universities as Comenius University through the STARMUS Festival. The third Gold Medal of Comenius University was presented to the representatives of ESET for their support of excellent research, and the popularisation of science and culture in Slovakia. ESET brought the STARMUS festival to Slovakia.
In addition to the gold medals, the rector presented commemorative medals to Richard Marko, Anton Zajac and Pavel Luka of ESET. Commemorative medals were also awarded to five speakers who spoke at CU during this week – the expert on conflicts in the Middle East Rim Turkmani; Mars exploration expert Scott Hubbard; Nobel laureate in physics Donna Strickland; and chemistry Nobel Prize winner Kurt Wüthrich. On Friday, asteroid expert Patrick Michel will give the last lecture in the series.
"There has probably never been a better time in modern history to emphasize the role of rationality in our lives. It is extremely important to focus our minds on the principles of science, which involves constant disciplined criticism and the rejection of cognitive shortcuts. In science, ups are often followed by falls. However, one always needs to get up and try again. I have great respect for all those who adopted this principle as their lifelong mission," said CU Rector Marek Števček. At the same time, the rector emphasised the significance of the STARMUS festival in promoting science in general and Comenius University in the international context in particular.
Dr. Garik Israelian is an Armenian-Spanish astrophysicist from the Institute of Astrophysics in the Canary Islands. He is the founder and creative director of the STARMUS festival. His research led to several major discoveries published in peer-reviewed journals on topics such as extrasolar planets, massive stars, and binary black hole systems.
Sir Brian Harold May, CBE is an English musician, astrophysicist, co-founder of the band Queen and co-founder of the STARMUS festival. In 2005, he became a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his services to the music industry and to charity. In 2007, he received his doctorate in astrophysics at Imperial College London. In 2023, he was knighted by King Charles III.. Apart from music and science, he is a stereoscopy enthusiast and an animal rights activist.
ESET has been offering innovative and award-winning digital security solutions for businesses, homes and critical infrastructure for over 30 years. ESET has long supported science and research, including the activities of Comenius University researchers. The company is also the official associated partner of the university in the ENLIGHT alliance and participates in several projects of Comenius University’s regional academy.
The STARMUS festival is taking place between 12-17 May, 2024 in Bratislava, and its focus this year is the planet Earth. In addition to the main line-up of musical performances and lectures the festival includes a series of lectures at partner academic establishments, among them Comenius University. During the festival, the university is also participating in the STARMUS Camp research and learning center at Hlavné námestie.

Nuclear Seminar - Jakub Kaizer (22.5.2024)

Wednesday 22.5.2024 at 14:00, Lecrure room F1/364

Ing. Jakub Kaizer, PhD.:
Assessment of the environmental impact from discharging of tritium-contaminated water from Fukushima
Abstract:
In August 2023, the long-planned discharging of radioactive wastewater from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) started after the confirmation of its feasibility and safety. As this water contains elevated amounts of tritium even after being diluted, a lot of resources have been invested in the monitoring of the Fukushima coastal region where the discharge outlet is located. We compare the first 3H surface activity concentrations from these measurements (up to the end of November 2023) with the available background values to evaluate a possible impact of the long-term discharging on humans and environmental levels of the radionuclide of interest in the same or nearby area. From our results, we can conclude that the joint effect of horizontal and vertical mixing has been significant enough to reduce tritium concentrations at the monitored locations in the region close to the FDNPP port two days after the end of the respective phase of the discharging beyond the detection limit of the applied analytical methods (~ 0.3 Bq L-1). Moreover, the distant correlation analysis showed that stations located further than 1.5 km from the outlet were impacted by the discharging to a similar level. We also estimated that the 3H activity concentration in the offshore Fukushima region would be elevated by 0.01 Bq L-1 at maximum over a year of continuous discharging, which is in concordance with the already published modelling papers and much less than the impact of the FDNPP accident in 2011.

Algebraic Graph Theory Seminar - Nina Hronkovičová (17.5.2024)

Friday 17.5.2024 at 13:00, Lecture room M/IX (online too)

Nina Hronkovičová:
On Pseudo-geometric Siamese Color Graphs
Abstract:
In our previous presentation, the concept of Siamese color graphs was introduced, which entails decomposing a complete graph into strongly regular subgraphs that share a spread (a set of same-size cliques covering each vertex exactly once).sSpecifically, a complete classification of geometric Siamese color graphs on 15 and 40 vertices was provided.
Building upon this foundation, our current research delves deeper into Siamese color graphs. Further computer-aided search techniques are used to extend our research to encompass pseudo-geometric Siamese color graphs with 40 vertices, resulting in a complete classification of these structures as well.
Those of you who are not able to attend in person or who are still uncertain about the safety of attending in person are welcome to attend via
.
CU’S FACULTY OF NATURAL SCIENCES WILL RECEIVE THE GREATEST NUMBER OF YOUNG RESEARCHERS’ GRANTS

Bratislava, 15 May, 2024: Comenius University Bratislava has been supporting the research of young...

CU Young Researchers’ grants
This year, the usual CU grant call attracted 346 applications, and 147 young researchers were selected for grant funding. Each project can receive 750 or 1000 euros from CU’s Development Fund. The money needs to be spent by 15 December 2024.
One of the projects that received a Young Researchers’ Grant was that of Tatiana Hess from the Faculty of Arts. In her project the author studies the intimate life of women who suffer from anorexia nervosa. The aim of the project is to survey a sample of Slovak and Czech adult female respondents diagnosed with anorexia nervosa using an online questionnaires and subsequent qualitative interviews.
Another selected project, of Dagmar Majerechová from the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences, studies the subjective well-being of pupils with special educational needs. In her research, she examines how these children feel at elementary schools and how certain identified interventions could contribute to an improvement of their experience in the school environment.
Marek Adamkovič from the Faculty of Law of Comenius University examines the possibilities and boundaries of the use of criminal law in the fight against disinformation, in terms of its effectiveness, proportionality, legitimacy and compatibility with human rights and the principles of the rule of law.
CU Excellent Grants
This year, for the first time, CU’s Rector Marek Števček was awarding CU Excellent Grants. The funding for this scheme comes from the Early stage grants of the Recovery Plan. PhD students submitted 262 applications, 84 out of which will be selected by CU to receive up to 6,000 euros.
One of the successful applicants to receive an Excellent Grant was Iryna Beikun from the Faculty of Natural Sciences. Her research focuses on the experimental and methodical evaluation of selected procedures for measuring water infiltration into the soil. In her project she monitors the suitability of various methods or their combinations, for different soils located in certain typical geoecologic situations.
PhD student Jakub Krcho from the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics examines selected methods of student evaluation in educational robotics. He plans to identify and assess these evaluation methods during the teaching process at various schools.
In the field of humanities, one of the approved applicants was Patrícia Sára Šimková from the Evangelical Lutheran Theological Faculty whose project aims to develop a comparative study and implementation of innovative and effective psychotherapeutic techniques in the pastoral care for the sick in Slovakia.
"CU grants are a good opportunity to support the creative research work of young researchers at our alma mater. I am pleased that this year the financial support will also be extended to include Excellent Grants from the Recovery Plan. I believe that this investment will yield a profit in the form of high-quality research output and will motivate young researchers in their further research." said CU’s Rector Marek Števček.
This year once again, the highest number of successful applicants in both grant schemes were from the Faculty of Natural Sciences, followed by the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics, the Faculty of Medicine, and the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine.
The purpose of CU grants is to support scientific, pedagogical and artistic projects of internal PhD researchers. The Rector awards grants after a proposal by CU’s Grant Commission whose members are appointed by him. They are supported by the Office of Scientific Research and PhD Studies of the Rectorate.

Seminar of Department of Theoretical Physics - Amihay Hanany (17.5.2024)

Friday 17.5.2024 at 9:50, Lecture room F1/108

prof. Amihay Hanany (Imperial College London):
Branes, gauge theories, and magnetic quivers
Abstract:
Branes are well studied objects in the area of string theory - for several decades. Likewise are supersymmetric gauge theories - possibly longer. Both topics have been at the focus of my research interests for many years. In this talk we will discuss the general aspects of brane configurations with gauge theories on their world volume. The aim will be to give a notion of magnetic quivers and show how they solve long standing problems of non perturbation nature in supersymmetric field theories.

Seminar of Graph Theory - Matúš Matok (16.5.2024)

Thursday 16.5.2024 at 9:50, Lecture room C

Matúš Matok:
Towards the smallest signed planar non-4-colourable graph
Abstract:
In 2019, Kardoš and Narboni constructed a counterexample to the 4-colour theorem for signed planar graphs, proposed as a conjecture by Máčajová, Raspaud and Škoviera in 2016. This counterexample consisted of gadgets with significant properties. Gadgets, in the form of tripoles, became the area of our interest. Therefore, we introduced a classification of tripoles and set out to find the smallest representative of each class. In this talk, we will discuss the details of the exhaustive search for these representatives.
