Seminar of Department of Theoretical Physics - Mário Ziman (17.12.2024)

Tuesday 17.12.2024 at 14:00, Lecture room F2/125

Mário Ziman:
Incompatibility of quantum devices

Abstract:
One of the first things we learn about quantum systems is the Heisenberg uncertainty relation. Limitations to measure statistics of non-commutative observables are considered to be one of the key features of quantum physics. In this talk we will introduce the operational paradigm of incompatible devices - the qualitative mathematical origin of the existence of all forms of uncertainties. We will discuss "no-go" implications not only for measurement devices. Further we will formulate this concept for hypothetical general probabilistic theories that exhibit even stronger differences from classical physics, for example regarding the violation of Einstein-Podolski-Rosen idea of local realism.

[Translate to English:] Seminár z teoretickej informatiky - Viliam Geffert (13.12.2024)

[Translate to English:] v piatok 13.12.2024 o 11:00 hod. v miestnosti M 213

[Translate to English:] Prednášajúci: Viliam Geffert (UPJŠ Košice)
Názov: Konverzie medzi binárnymi a unárnymi konečnostavovými automatmi

The ENLIGHT Alliance evaluated the year 2024 and outlined future challenges

On 5 December 2024, the annual meeting of Comenius University representatives in the ENLIGHT...

The meeting was opened by Vice-Rector for International Relations Jozef Tancer, who highlighted the progress that the alliance has achieved and the role that Comenius University plays in it, as well as the importance of international partnerships for the development of universities. Staff of the ENLIGHT Office presented the activities that took place in 2024. Four BIPs (Blended Intensive Programmes) took place at CU - the 'Winter School on Fake News' at the Evangelical Lutheran Theological Faculty, the ‘AI for Everyone’ course, a course on comprehensive solutions to environmental problems at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics (FMPI), and a course on critical thinking development at the Faculty of Medicine. BIPs - courses that combine online teaching at the ‘home’ university of the student with a one-week stay at an international partner university - are gaining popularity among students, and sixteen of them will take place in the alliance during this academic year. In 2024, CU also received grant funding from ENLIGHT+ for projects such as ‘Where can we find mathematics?’ by Mária Slavíčková from FMPI, or ‘Experience at joint educational gardens of four universities’, presented by Martin Šebesta from the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
Innovation, sustainability, and mobility are priorities
The event also included lectures on innovation in teaching. Daniel Klimovský and Martina Benzoni Baláž from the Faculty of Arts spoke about their course ‘Public Policy in Slovakia’, which won the ENLIGHT Teaching & Learning Award this year. The course is based on the Challenge-Based Education concept presented by Lucia Hlavatá from the Faculty of Education. Milan Remiš and Oliver Vavro from the Erasmus+ Office of the CU Rectorate informed about increasing mobility of students and staff of Comenius University to the alliance universities. As Jozef Tancer pointed out, the upcoming challenge for the alliance will be to increase the number of mobility opportunities. Peter Hanajík from the Faculty of Natural Sciences spoke on green sustainability, presenting examples of good practice across all faculties of the university.
External cooperation
The Regional Academy is a platform of the ENLIGHT alliance to enable external cooperation of universities. Kateryna Yakovenko from the ENLIGHT Office of CU’s Rectorate presented the activities of the office in the past year, emphasizing the role that Comenius University plays in the development of external partnerships in the alliance. Eleven ENLIGHT activities of the Regional Academy took place since January 2024, e.g. a lecture by the Office of the Public Ombudsman at the University of the Third Age or the 'Cities in Motion’ meeting with partners from the municipal authorities of Galway, Ghent and Uppsala. External cooperation will receive a significant boost through a pilot micro-certificate project. CU currently prepares them with the ‘Clown Doctors’ civic association also for partners from Uppsala, Groningen and Göttingen.
Students as an active component of the alliance
Student representatives of CU Adrián Binka and Šimon Gabčo presented the activities of the Student Network in the ENLIGHT alliance. They emphasized the importance of international cooperation, experience sharing, and showed how to become actively involved in the decision-making of the alliance. Future challenges The meeting was concluded by vice-rector Jozef Tancer who expressed his satisfaction with the work of individual teams within the alliance and encouraged further development of cooperation. "The ENLIGHT alliance gives us unique opportunities to improve internationalization, and also to increase the quality of our education and research. In the coming years though, we need to set out on the difficult road of developing long-term sustainability of the alliance," he said.

Seminar of Graph Theory - Jozef Širáň (12.12.2024)

Thursday 12.12.2024 at 9:50, Lecture room M 213

Jozef Širáň (Slovak University of Technology, Bratislava):
Orientably-regular embeddings of multigraphs
Abstract:
Informally, a graph embedding on some orientable surface gives an orientably-regular map if the embedding exhibits the `highest level of orientation-preserving symmetry'. Inspection of Conder's list of orientably-regular maps up to genus 300 reveals that nearly 90 per cent of them are such that either the map or its dual has a non-simple underlying graph, generating thus legitimate interest in orientably-regular embeddings of multigraphs. In the talk we will explain an approach to this topic based on group presentations and apply it to classification of regular embeddings of complete multigraphs.

Doctoral colloquium -Janka Boborová (9.12.2024)

Monday 9.12.2024 at 13:10, Lecture room I/9

Janka Boborová:
Proposing an Evaluation Method for Abduction Algorithms
Abstract:
Abduction is a type of inference that aims to find a hypothetical explanation for a given observation based on background knowledge. Unlike deduction and induction, abduction is not yet fully explored and is interesting to investigate mainly in the ontologies and description logics area. It has been applied, for example, in medical diagnosis, criminology and model-based diagnosis.
Having researched several algorithms that can be used for any description logic regardless of its expressivity, we plan to compare them using our experimental abduction solver. However, there is no benchmark dataset for the abduction problem. Therefore, we propose a method for generating inputs using justifications.

Comenius University was present at the Saco Student Fairs in Stockholm

In previous years, Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in Martin was our only faculty to participate in this event, but this year the entire university offered information to potential students. Medicine was, like in the past, the field that attracted the greatest interest but students also inquired about psychology, law, and natural sciences, because CU offers study programmes in English in these and in other areas. Students were particularly interested in studying abroad and in specific aspects of student life in Bratislava, such accommodation or in working while studying.
The Saco Student Fairs are the largest post-secondary education event in Sweden. They take place in Stockholm and in Malmö and offer an extensive digital guide in addition to physical stands of various universities.

CU's participation in the fairs in Sweden was partly financed by the Recovery and Resilience Facility for Slovakia, under the call 'Support for the promotion of universities abroad'.

Nuclear Seminar - Gennady Kozlov (11.12.2024)

prof. Gennady Kozlov (CERN):
Compact bound state of scalar particles

Abstract:
We study the feebly interacting dark matter with the Standard Model fields, where the preceding and the latter ones are the constituents of the bosonic cosmological objects, the scalar boson stars (BS). The scalar dark matter (SDM) massive fields can form the compact scalar bound state when minimally coupled to gravity. We consider an effective description of a more complete model with the (thermo)dynamic potential of the BS at finite temperature. The formation of the BS intuitively is explained in terms of the string-like structure of the electric fluxes of the hidden vector field under the impact (the girth) of the SDM fields. The spin 1/2 dark matter particles correspond to the flux-tube excitation with terminals. The SDM fields may fluctuate with the temperature and are established around the equilibrium state at some weak background scale. The BS may have approximately a stationary form with an asymptotically flat geometry, and the maximal mass of the star is larger than the solar mass. In the talk, the data of the LHC at CERN collected in 2016-2024, were used.
