CU LAUNCHES MAIN PHASE OF BLOCK B RENOVATION AT ĽUDOVÍT ŠTÚR DORMITORIES

Bratislava, 24 March 2025 – The renovation of Slovakia’s largest student residence complex is...

To date, preparatory work has been carried out in the building to ready the site for handover to the contractor, who will take over in a few days and begin the renovation proper. The project’s funding, amounting to approximately EUR 12.5 million, is secured through the Recovery and Resilience Plan mechanism and the university’s own resources.
“We are very pleased that, following the launch of the renovation of Slovakia’s largest student dormitories in 2023, we are now entering another key stage with the modernisation of Block B. The result of our shared efforts will be quality and affordable student accommodation worthy of the 21st century. Even during the reconstruction period, CU’s residence halls will continue to provide accommodation for the vast majority of applicants, and we remain among the universities in the EU with the highest share of accommodated students,” said CU Rector Marek Števček.
The Ľudovít Štúr dorm (“Štúrak”) is the largest residence complex of the university. The renovation of high-rise Block A is currently underway: its first phase has already been completed (including renewed vertical and horizontal utility lines, sanitary cores, and central heating). The second phase began in September 2024 (involving roof insulation, facade renovation, and replacement of all windows and balcony doors) and is scheduled for completion by summer 2026. In parallel, the renovation of Block B is starting, which will also proceed in stages.
The CU management plans to return both accommodation blocks into service by the start of the 2026/2027 academic year. Only after the completion of the first two phases will the university begin Phase III, which includes the replacement of furniture and flooring, and repainting. This will be carried out gradually, floor by floor. CU’s priority remains to return the housing capacity to full use as soon as possible.
“Securing funding for the renovation of another dorm building is a great success and, once again, the result of a significant amount of work. For the renovation of Block B, the university submitted a funding application under the Recovery Plan, administered by the Ministry of Education, requesting the maximum eligible amount (nearly EUR 10 million), which was granted. The university will contribute its own resources to cover the remainder, with the total project cost reaching approximately EUR 12.5 million,” said CU Vice-Rector for Property Management and Investment, Jana Duračinská.

Spring 2025 Eastern Europe Tour Fair

FM UK Delegation at the Spring 2025 Eastern Europe Tour Fair

A delegation from the Faculty of Management of Comenius University (FM UK), consisting of Dr. Vilčeková, Kočišová, and Gažová, along with colleagues from the Rector’s Office of the university, participated in the Spring 2025 Eastern Europe Tour fair, starting with a series of events in Sofia, Bulgaria. The aim of participation was to present the Faculty's study programs, research activities, and academic opportunities to international students from Anglo-American high schools. These student fairs, organized as part of the College Fair at the Anglo-American School of Sofia, provided an opportunity for young people from Central and Eastern Europe to learn more about study opportunities at FM UK.
After a successful event in Sofia, the fair continued in Bucharest, held at two high schools offering the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. At this event, we once again presented our study programs and study opportunities, with a focus on fostering international cooperation and attracting talented students from Romania. The fairs offered a chance for personal meetings with prospective students, many of whom showed significant interest in our faculty.
The series of fairs concluded with the participation of the Faculty of Management at the College Fair at St. Catherine's British School in Athens, Greece. This event attracted not only students from St. Catherine’s but also students from other high schools, who were keen to learn about our study programs and the practical applications of these programs after graduation. There was considerable interest in studying at our faculty, particularly regarding the courses offered within individual programs.
Participation in these fairs provided the faculty with valuable feedback, helping us better understand the needs and expectations of international students. The dissemination of information about study opportunities in English, admission requirements, and other relevant information for foreign students contributed to increased interest in our programs and enhanced awareness of the Faculty of Management among international students.
This successful trip underscored the importance of the Faculty’s international activities, which focus on attracting high-quality students and supporting international collaboration.

Algebraic Graph Theory Seminar - Martin Bachratý (28.3.2025)

Friday 28.3.2025 at 13:15 hod., Lecture room M IX (online too)

Martin Bachratý, Slovak University of Technology, Bratislava
(joint work with Michal Hagara):
Recursive characterisation of skew morphisms of finite cyclic groups
Termín: 28.3.2025, 13:15 hod., M IX a

Abstract:
A skew morphism of a finite group G is a specific permutation of G, the definition of which closely resembles that of a group automorphism. Skew morphisms were first introduced in the paper by Robert Jajcay and Jozef Širáň in 2002, where it was shown that they are closely related to regular Cayley maps. One of the most prominent problems about skew morphisms is to find their classification for all finite cyclic groups. Despite substantial progress over the last decade this problem still remains open. In this talk, we explore different ways in which a skew morphism of a cyclic group can be reduced to a smaller skew morphism, as well as possible methods for reconstructing a skew morphism from its reductions. In particular, we show that each skew morphism of the cyclic group of order n is uniquely determined by two suitable reductions and one element of the group. This leads to a recursive characterisation of skew morphisms for all finite cyclic groups.

Seminar of Graph Theory - Erik Řehulka (27.3.2025)

Thursday 27.3.2025 at 9:50, Lecture room M 213

Erik Řehulka:
Cyclic edge-connectivity of junctions of multipoles
Abstract:
Cyclic edge-connectivity is an interesting property of cubic graphs that has proven to be significant in graph theory. Research has shown that high cyclic edge-connectivity correlates with certain structural properties of cubic graphs, and notably, minimal potential counterexamples to several open problems need to have high cyclic edge-connectivity. However, the theoretical tools for determining cyclic edge-connectivity remain limited. In this work, we study cubic graphs built from smaller building blocks and demonstrate how we can determine the cyclic edge-connectivity of the resulting graph by imposing certain conditions for these blocks.

CNC seminar in cognitive science - Margarita Pavlova (26.3.2025)

Wednesday 26.3.2025 at 11:30, Lecture rook I/9 (online too)

Dr. Margarita Pavlova (New Bulgarian University, Sofia):
Analogy in Human Thinking

Abstract:
Analogical reasoning – the ability to reason about common relations – is a hallmark of intelligence. In this talk, I will review analogy and analogical processing and present two studies on analogy in learning. The first study (Pavlova & Greenhoot, 2023) asked how people build transferable and generalizable knowledge by learning from examples. We investigated the conditions that make comparison and explanation beneficial to learning by comparing learning outcomes of engaging in explanation or comparison in a categorization task and examining how varying degrees of instructional support affect these two processes. The results showed an advantage of comparison over explanation; however, this was specific to combination of relational labels and definitions and prompts to compare. The second study Pavlova, 2024) examined the role of detecting the initial causal system model followed by engaging in active vs. passive structural alignment in recognizing the key causal principles in subsequent novel examples. The results echo prior research on the benefit of analogical comparison in learning relational categories: participants who were prompted to compare outperformed participants in the baseline condition. Moreover, while the accurate representation of the causal system predicted noticing the relational structure in novel examples, making more accurate relational mappings made participants more likely to notice the structure above and beyond having an accurate representation. These findings offer insight into the role of active vs. passive analogical comparison and have implications for conditions that might support learning of relational categories.

Permanent Representative of the Slovak Republic to NATO visited the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences of Comenius University Bratislava

Bratislava, 21 March, 2025: The Permanent Representative of the Slovak Republic to the North...

Marek Varga was welcomed to FSES CU by the Vice-Rector for External Relations, Radomír Masaryk. In his introductory remarks, he reflected on the current uncertain global situation and mentioned the recent successful visit of the NATO Secretary General to Comenius University. “The event saw an unprecedented turnout — the auditorium filled up within 30–40 minutes, which happened for the first time in the university’s history. It shows the great public interest in security issues and Slovakia’s position within NATO,” Vice-Rector Masaryk stated.
Samuel Švajda, a member of the accompanying team and an alumnus of FSES CU, introduced Mr Varga and highlighted his extensive experience, including service in Bosnia and Herzegovina, his role as a military expert in Washington, and his post as ambassador in the Middle East. The diplomat assumed the post of Permanent Representative of the Slovak Republic to NATO on 1 September, 2024.
In his speech, Mr Varga addressed NATO’s transformation in response to current challenges, particularly the war in Ukraine, and emphasised Slovakia’s important position as a medium-sized country within the alliance. “In today’s unstable international situation, our membership in the North Atlantic Alliance Treaty Organisation (NATO) is of vital importance. Without the firm protection and the safe haven provided by international cooperation within the alliance, we would be in a vulnerable position. Therefore, it is crucial for us to remain closely connected with our allies.”
During the discussion, he referred to the results of a recent Focus agency survey, which showed that 70% of Slovaks support NATO membership. Mr Varga underlined the link between security, stability, and prosperity. Students raised questions regarding concerns over the United States’ commitments to NATO, European defence capabilities, and the future of NATO enlargement — especially regarding the potential membership of Ukraine. They also discussed increasing defence spending.
Toward the end of the event, participants raised the possibility of reintroducing compulsory military service. Mr Varga responded that a return to conscription in Slovakia was unlikely. Samuel Švajda pointed out the job opportunities and internships within the alliance, and, along with another team member, Lea Preisinger, reassured attendees of the implementation of gender equality within NATO bodies.
