"Milestones 2025" conference in a modern yet traditional form

12 April 2025, Častá-Papiernička

The International Conference "Milestones of Law in the Central European Space 2025" with the central theme "The Rule of Law in the 21st Century: challenges, opportunities, and global perspectives" opened its 19th year for doctoral students, researchers, and teaching staff in the field of law in the V4 countries on 10-12 April 2025 at the premises of the National Council SR Special Purpose Facility in Častá-Papiernička. The event was traditionally held under the auspices of the Dean of the Faculty of Law of Comenius University in Bratislava Eduard Burda and with a generous financial support of the International Visegrad Fund.
The Conference primarily aims to prepare young scientists for their professional careers. The importance of the event lies not only in the presentation of the results of the work on the chosen topic, but also offers a space for feedback, both from colleagues and invited experts. It also provides a platform for the exchange of experiences and ideas, for the development of communication skills and establishment of new contacts. This year's conference brought together young researchers from law faculties in Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary, thanks to the financial support of the Visegrad Fund. The nineteenth year saw a record attendance of 191 participants.
The Department of Criminal Law, Criminology and Criminalistics welcomed, as in previous years, the most participants. The main theme of the section "Current Challenges, Opportunities and Global Perspectives of Criminal Law" focused on the latest trends and challenges in the field of criminal law in the global context. Topics related to the application of institutes of criminal law, challenges in the application practice, as well as changes in criminal codes were discussed.
The section Legal Communication in Foreign Languages with the topic "Legal Language in Professional Discourse" was a new one at the conference. It primarily focused on the linguistic and legal aspects of translating and teaching professional legal terms in English, discussing solutions for translating legal texts with an emphasis on accuracy, consistency, and the specifics of legal systems. The aim was to promote interdisciplinary dialogue and knowledge exchange to improve the quality of understanding between legal systems and to improve the processes of teaching professional legal language.
The conference is essentially focused on legal science, but this year's programme also offered four professional workshops to develop the skills and abilities of participants. The first workshop was held in cooperation with the Slovak Environmental Inspectorate (SIŽP) on the topic "In the field with SIŽP". "We are looking forward to this cooperation and we are glad that two experts, Richard Ardó and Matúš Kysacký, accepted the invitation and presented the participants not only the solutions to the issue of extraordinary deterioration of water quality but especially the technical equipment that the Inspectorate currently has to carry out its inspection activities. Participants were able to see new drones, spectrometers, and other modern equipment firsthand, as well as a demonstration in the outdoor area showing how technology that uses smoke testing can accurately delineate, for example, an unregistered wastewater outlet pipe that discharges into a river.," said Dr. Matúš Michalovič from the Department of Administrative and Environmental Law of the Faculty of Law, CU.
Other workshops were dedicated to the topics of electronic monitoring of defendants and convicts, legal design - tools for the modern lawyer, and internship opportunities for students within the EU.

Doctoral colloquium - Martin Halaj (14.4.2025)

Monday 14.4.2025 at 13:10, Lecture room I/9

Martin Halaj:
One Year Later: Did LLMs Solve Multilingual NLP or (Simply) Redefine the Problem?
Abstract:
The continued proliferation and advancement of Large Language Models (LLMs) over the past year, marked by releases like Claude 3.7 Sonnet, Gemini 2.5 Pro, GPT-4o, Grok 3 and Llama 3, have further solidified their transformative impact on Natural Language Processing. Tasks once considered challenging are frequently handled with remarkable proficiency. Concurrently, a significant focus has emerged on enhancing reasoning capabilities, exemplified by models such as OpenAI's o3 series and DeepSeek-R1. Despite these strides, the initial observation persists: impressive performance, often benchmarked in English, raises questions about equitable capabilities across the linguistic spectrum, particularly for less-resourced languages.
This presentation revisits the state-of-the-art, specifically asking whether LLMs have truly 'solved' multilingual NLP or if their primary effect has been to redefine the challenges. We will examine the tangible progress observed for languages like Slovak, where new models and dedicated resources have yielded notable improvements, suggesting a brighter outlook, potentially including Slovak-specific models. Our recent findings evaluating these newer LLMs on (not only) Slovak tasks will be presented, illustrating both advancements and persistent gaps. Ultimately, we argue that while LLM capabilities are undeniable, the multilingual NLP problem is far from solved; rather, it has been reshaped, demanding new evaluation paradigms, focus on lower-resource languages, and nuanced approaches beyond simple capability scaling.

Abstract:
An edge e is normal in a proper edge coloring of a cubic graph G if the number of distinct colors on the four edges incident to e is 2 or 4. In the first case we call the edge e poor, in the later case we call the edge e rich. A normal coloring of a graph G is a proper edge coloring in which every edge of G is normal. In this talk, we present graphs that have no poor or no rich edge over all normal 5-colorings.

TERAIS seminar on human-robot interaction - Omar Eldardeer, Marco Matarese (11.4.2025))

Friday 11.4.2025 at 11:30, Lecture room I 9

Dr. Omar Eldardeer (Italian Institute of Technology, Genoa, Italy):
Towards Human-Robot Shared Perception
Abstract:
With the increasing presence of robots in our daily lives, the need for seamless human-robot collaboration has become more critical than ever. A fundamental aspect of this collaboration is shared perception—the ability for both humans and robots to develop a mutual understanding of their environment to support effective joint action. In this talk, we explore the theoretical foundations necessary for achieving shared perception, discussing key requirements.
Furthermore, we delve into biologically inspired cognitive architectures that enhance robotic perception, drawing insights from human cognition to improve how robots interpret, learn from, and respond to dynamic environments. By integrating principles from neuroscience and artificial intelligence, these architectures pave the way for more intuitive and natural human-robot interactions. Through this discussion, we aim to highlight the challenges, opportunities, and future directions in the quest for more intelligent and collaborative robotic systems.

Dr. Marco Matarese (Italian Institute of Technology, Genoa, Italy):
Friend or Foe? The Role of Socially Skilled Robots in Explainable AI
Abstract:
As artificial intelligence (AI) systems become more prevalent in high-stakes decision-making and collaborative environments, the explainability of such systems remains a critical challenge. Integrating social skills into explainable AI (XAI) represents a promising step toward more effective human-AI collaboration. Socially capable robots can enhance trust, engagement, and comprehension by delivering explanations in ways that align with human cognitive and social processes.
In this talk, we examine the potential of socially skilled robots in XAI by highlighting the positive effects of social explanations on human-robot collaboration. By leveraging natural communication patterns, such as verbal and non-verbal cues, these systems can facilitate better decision-making and performance in complex tasks.
However, we also explore the potential downsides of explainable artificial agents-assisted training since implementing such agents is not without risks. Excessive reliance on AI explanations can reduce learning and problem-solving efforts, fostering user complacency and diminishing long-term learning outcomes. Additionally, social reciprocity mechanisms may lead users to accept explanations uncritically, even when flawed or misleading.
By examining these dynamics, we aim to foster a discussion on how to design AI systems that balance clarity, engagement, and user autonomy, ensuring that explanations support rather than hinder human learning and decision-making

Seminar of Graph Theory - Róbert Jajcay (10.4.2025)

Thursday 10.4.2025 at 9:50, Lecture room M 213

Róbert Jajcay:
Classification and Extremal Properties of Graphs Sharing Properties of Vertex- and/or Edge-Transitive Graphs
<link https://zona.fmph.uniba.sk/fileadmin/fmfi/aktuality/kalendar/202425/2024_11_28_teoria_grafov_Roman_Nedela.pdf _blank - "Abstrakt - Roman Nedela - seminár z teórie grafov">

Abstract:
While many problems in Graph Theory do not require the graphs considered to be vertex- or edge- transitive, ultimately, some of the best constructions yield graphs that just `happen' to have these properties. We choose to address this observation in a reverse direction in the context of the Cage and Degree/Diameter Problems, two of the fundamental problems in Extremal Graph Theory, and focus on classes of extremal graphs that are not necessarily vertex- or edge-transitive but share the girth-cycle structure properties of vertex-transitive or edge-transitive graphs.
After a brief survey of the role of vertex-transitive graphs in these areas, we introduce three interconnected concepts sharing the properties of vertex- or edge-transitive graphs: edge-girth regular, girth-regular, and vertex-girth-regular graphs. All of these concept can be best understood via the unifying concept of the {\em girth-cycle signature} defined for each vertex $u$ to be the multi-set containing the numbers of girth-cycles passing through the edges adjacent to $u$. Using this concept, a $k$-regular graph of girth $g$, a $(k,g)$-graph, is called {\em edge-girth-regular}, $egr(k,g,\lambda)$-graph, if the girth-cycle signature of each vertex is the same and the number of girth-cycles through each edge is equal to a constant $\lambda$. A $(k,g)$-graph is called {\em girth-regular} if the girth-cycle signature of each vertex is the same (without requiring all the members of the signature to be the same), and is called {\em vertex-girth-regular}, $vgr(k,g,\Sigma)$, if the {\em sum} of the numbers in the girth-cycle signature of each vertex is the same and equal to $\Sigma$. Clearly, each edge-girth-regular graph is girth-regular and each girth-regular graph is vertex-girth-regular (with none of the classes equal). In addition, vertex-transitive graphs are necessarily girth- and vertex-girth-regular and edge-transitive graphs are edge-girth-regular.
In view of the connections of the above defined classes of graphs to the Cage and Degree/Diameter Problems, we shall present some classifications for small parameter sets $k$, $g$, $\lambda$, and $\Sigma$, and investigate the extremal properties of graphs in these classes.

Seminar on Qualitative Theory of Differential Equations - Pavol Quittner (10.4.2025)

Thursday 10.4.2025 at 14:00, Lecture room M 223

Pavol Quittner:
Threshold, subthreshold and global unbounded solutions of superlinear heat equations

Abstract:
We consider the semilinear heat equation with a superlinear nonlinearity and we study the properties of threshold or subthreshold solutions, lying on or below the boundary between blow-up and global existence, respectively. For the Cauchy-Dirichlet problem, we prove the boundedness of any subthreshold solution. This implies, in particular, that all global unbounded solutions - if they exist - are threshold solutions. For the Cauchy problem, these properties fail in general but we show that they become true for a suitably modified notion of threshold. Our results improve known results even in the special case of power nonlinearities, especially in the Sobolev critical and supercritical cases.
This is a joint work with Philippe Souplet.
