GET VACCINATED AGAINST THE FLU, URGES THE DEAN OF THE FACULTY OF PHARMACY

Bratislava, 11 October 2021: According to the Public Health Authority of Slovakia, the number of...

Influenza is a contagious respiratory disease which causes more than 800 deaths annually in Slovakia. This figure may not appear very high when compared to the deaths caused by other, non-contagious diseases. However, these are unnecessary deaths which can be prevented by vaccination.
In Slovakia, the total influenza vaccine coverage of the population in the 2019/2020 season was below 5% and it was just under 12% in the at-risk population of 65+. According to OECD data, Slovakia has the lowest vaccination coverage among EU member states. International authorities such as the World Health Organisation and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control recommend a vaccination coverage in the general population of at least 30%, and at least 75% in the at-risk population.
"Flu deaths are preventable. One of the ways of doing this is to motivate healthcare professionals to spread awareness among the population-at-risk. And, naturally, to lead by example," says the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy of Comenius University Ján Klimas, who received a flu shot in October.
In Slovakia, a single flu vaccine shot costs €11.16 and is fully covered by the public health insurance. More than 308,000 doses were administered in the 2020/21 season. The total cost of these vaccines to the public health insurance system, excluding the charge for administration to the patient, was just under EUR 3.5 million. On the other hand, according to a study by the University of Genoa, published in 2012 in the journal Human Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics, the cost of treating influenza was €940 in patients aged 18-65 and €1,270 in patients aged 65+.
Similarly, according to a 2020 research published by the Dutch Centre for Infectious Diseases, Epidemiology and Surveillance, and the Centre for Infectious Disease Control in The European Journal of Health Economics, the average cost of hospitalisation of a flu patient in the Netherlands was between €6,100 and €8,300, representing €20-28 million per year. In 2008, the loss of productivity due to influenza (i.e. indirect costs) was estimated by the Pharmacoeconomics magazine at between €6.4 and €9.8 billion per year in France and Germany alone. According to more recent data presented in a 2019 report of the International Longevity Centre UK, a British think-tank, more than 90 million people aged 50+ contract the flu every year, mostly in the more prosperous countries, leading to a loss of some 159 million working days, worth an estimated €33 billion.
According to the World Health Organisation, vaccination is one of the most effective tools in combating the spread of the influenza virus. A vaccinated person protects others, in addition to protecting themselves. Healthcare professionals, who are in daily contact with patients, should particularly be vaccinated. Likewise, medical students who train in health care facilities, should get vaccinated. They would protect their patients, as well as themselves.

Promoting the education of mathematics teachers in primary and secondary schools by sharing innovative materials, forms and teaching

The goal of the project is to support further teacher education by sharing innovative forms,...

Main investigating organization: Faculty of mathematics, physics and informatics, Comenius University in Bratislava
Principal investigator: doc. PaedDr. Mária Slavíčková, PhD.
Cooperating investigators: PaedDr. Peter Vankúš, PhD., RNDr. Monika Dillingerová, PhD., Mgr. Michaela Vargová, PhD., Mgr. Emília Miťková, PhD., Mgr. Adam Jakubička
Cooperating organization: Faculty of education, Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic
Project funding: KEGA 014UK-4/2020
Project duration: 2020-2022
The goal of the project is to support further teacher education by sharing innovative forms, methods, and materials with the contribution of an active teacher community.
Currently, there are several web pages for Slovak mathematics teachers where they can share and find educational materials. Such websites offer quick access to some materials. However, there is a lack of guaranty of the didactical quality of these materials – their score is determined mainly by subjective opinions of the website’s visitors, then by expert evaluation and review. Another disadvantage of these websites is the absence of search according to specific criteria (e.g., ISCED levels, national curriculum standards).
This project aims to create open access online depository of educational resources for teaching mathematics, sorted systematically according to ISCED levels and according to mathematical topics contained in the national curriculum.
Apart from educational resources, we aim to support mathematics teachers in Slovakia by developing an active community of mathematics teachers with active connections to university educators and researchers. The community will be supported by:

annual organization of a professional conference "Two days with didactics of mathematics",

supporting teacher education through innovative forms, methods, and materials, with an active community of mathematics teachers in Slovakia,

publishing verified materials for teaching mathematics to secondary schools.

Professor Kip Thorne is an American physicist and an internationally recognized expert on gravitational physics and astrophysics who specialises in relativistic stars, black holes, and gravitational waves. He is one of the three scientists who were awarded the Nobel Prize in 2017 for the first direct detection and observation of gravitational waves. He has also made a name for himself in cinema as the executive producer and scientific advisor to Christopher Nolan's Hollywood movie Interstellar.
"I deeply respect Professor Thorne's excellent research and I highly appreciate his passion for the popularisation of science. He showed it by swapping his role of a physicist for the role of an actor, but has other popularisation activities like those undertaken in cooperation with ESET Foundation," said the Rector of Comenius University Marek Števček. "It is with a feeling of great honour that I present him the Grand Gold Medal, the highest recognition that Comenius University can bestow," he added.
The ceremony at which the Grand Gold Medal of Comenius University will be awarded takes place on 13 October 2021, at 9:30 a.m., in the Auditorium of Comenius University at 6 Šafárik square in Bratislava. The award ceremony will be followed by Professor Kip Thorne’s lecture entitled: "My profound relationship with the curved universe: from black holes and wormholes to time travel and gravitational waves."
The ceremony and the lecture will be broadcast live to lecture halls at several other Slovak universities and will also be
.
The world renowned theoretical physicist visits Slovakia to act as the chairman of the international jury which will award the
to excellent researchers. The international jury which is chaired by Professor Kip Thorne, will select laureates in two main categories - Outstanding Individual Contributor to Slovak Science and Exceptional Young Scientist in Slovakia Under the Age of 35.
"The visit of Professor Kip Thorne is a great honour for our country - and especially for its scientific community," says Richard Marko, CEO of ESET. "In addition to being an excellent scientist and researcher, Professor Thorne is also an avid populariser of scientific knowledge. His passion enables him to engage millions around the world and ignite fascination with hitherto unexplored aspects of the universe and the world around us."
Admission to the ceremonial presentation of the Grand Gold Medal and the lecture by Kip S. Thorns is free, but the current pandemic situation dictates that all guests must be vaccinated. You can <link https://uniba.sk/KipThorne/ _blank>register at this website
until the capacity is filled.

Bratislava, 6 October 2021: Comenius University Bratislava ranked 272nd in the latest edition of...

Three other Slovak universities made it to the top 1000 universities – the P. J. Šafárik University in Košice (651–700th band), Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava (701st – 800th band) and Technical University in Košice (901– 1000th band). The University of Žilina and Trnava University both ranked lower.
In the ‘Moscow Ranking’ the largest Slovak university came close to Charles University in Prague, which placed 150th, and ranked higher than Masaryk University in Brno, which ended in the 301st – 350th place band. Warsaw University in place 119 and Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU) in place 269 are the only other universities from a V4 country with a better ranking.
"Success in the rankings alone has never been the primary goal for us. Nevertheless, I was very pleased by this appreciation of our work. It is a great honour for us to be one of the top three universities in Czech and Slovak republics together with Charles University and CTU, and in the best four in V4 region, together with the University of Warsaw. We strive to improve and it is great that our efforts are noticed by the outside world," says Comenius University Rector Marek Števček.
The 2021 Three University Missions ranking evaluated 1,650 higher education institutions from 97 countries and territories short-listed from more than 2,000 institutions from 119 countries. Comenius University ranked 272nd in this edition, which is its second best ranking since 2018, when it was first evaluated.

on three areas: Education 45%, Research 25%, and University and Society 30%. No subjective surveys are used in the evaluation process. The project uses data and metrics from InCites by Clarivate Analytics, which manages the prestigious Current Contents database and the Global Institutional Profiles Project (GIPP). In 2018 the ranking was audited by PricewaterhouseCoopers Audit.

Seminar of Graph Theory - Robert Lukoťka (7.10.2021)

Thursday 7.10.2021 at 9:50, Lecture room M/213

Robert Lukoťka:
Circular flow number of Goldberg snarks
Abstract:
A circular nowhere-zero r-flow on a bridgeless graph G is an orientation of the edges and an assignment of real values from [1, r-1] to the edges in such a way that the sum of incoming values equals the sum of outgoing values for every vertex. The circular flow number of G is the infimum over all values $r$ such that $G$ admits a nowhere-zero $r$-flow. We prove that the circular flow number of Goldberg snark G_{2k+1} is 4+1/(k+1), proving a conjecture of Goedgebeur, Mattiolo, and Mazzuoccolo [J.~Goedgebeur, D.~Mattiolo, G.~Mazzuoccolo: \emph{Computational results and new bounds for the circular flow number of snarks}, Discrete Mathematics 343 (2020), 112026.].
Besides this, we discuss computational aspects of circular flows. We describe an efficient way how to reformulate the problem of determining the circular flow number as a mixed linear programing problem. We review computational results obtained by this approach.

Slovak innovators present their projects at Falling Walls Lab Slovakia

Bratislava, 1 October 2021: Slovakia will be represented in the international finale by a project...

The jury, consisting of scientists and experts from various disciplines, looked at the projects’ breakthrough factor, potential impact and form of presentation. It chose
from the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics of Comenius University Bratislava and SISSA Trieste. The project introduces an innovative method of simulating transformations of solids under pressure.
"Not all substances around us are in equilibrium. One example is the diamond in an engagement ring, which should not even exist at room temperature and pressure - it should revert back to pencil lead – graphite. Both forms are just different representations of the same element – carbon. In my presentation, I attempted to explain a new computational method developed by me and my tutor, which allows - among other things - to look for other such substances which are out of equilibrium. They could have a huge potential for practical use, like a diamond has," says the prize winner Matej Badin.
The second place was awarded to Mgr. Olivier Monfort, PhD. from the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University Bratislava, whose project focuses on the use of photochemistry in wastewater treatment. The jury awarded third place to MVDr. Marek Ratvaj from the University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice for his project of an innovative probiotic feed which could replace the use of pharmaceuticals in fish farming.

is a part of an international format that gives recognition to projects of exceptional young innovators from various scientific fields. The winner of Falling Walls Lab Slovakia 2021 will represent Slovakia in the international finale at which 100 participants from the whole world will compete in the category "Emerging Talents". They will present their research, initiative or business model in front of a jury composed of top scientists, innovators and business people. The winner will receive "The Breakthrough Winner" award coupled with a financial prize and, above all, the opportunity to present their entry on the main stage of the prestigious Falling Walls Conference which takes place on 7 November in Berlin.
For the fourth year, the Slovak finale was organized by Comenius University Bratislava in cooperation with the Learned Society of Slovakia (
) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD,
). Academic partners included the Slovak Academy of Sciences, the Slovak University of Technology, Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, the Technical University in Košice, the University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice, the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra, the University of Žilina and the Technical University in Zvolen. The event was held under the auspices of MUDr. Ľudovít Paulis, PhD., MPH, State Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic.
