Martin's Neonatology Days 2023

On May 17th and 18th, 2023, the esteemed halls of the Aula Magna at the Jessenius Faculty of...

"One of our main focuses, apart from addressing current issues concerning the optimization of hospital networks, was the care for children born at the brink of viability. This has been a resonating subject within the field of neonatology in Martin," reported Prof. Mirko Zibolen, MD, PhD, the event's professional guarantor and the Head of the Neonatology Clinic at University Hospital Martin and Jessenius Faculty of Medicine at Comenius University in Martin.
In recognition of the significance of this theme, numerous specialists from the Czech Republic also participated in the conference. Among them was Prof. Richard Plavka, MD, PhD from the General University Hospital in Prague, a renowned authority in caring for extremely immature newborns and a leading figure in European neonatology.
In Slovakia, the viability threshold for a newborn is set at the 24th week of pregnancy, which ideally lasts for an average of 40 weeks. The Neonatology Clinic, renowned for its Center of Urgent Care for critically ill newborns, is the only institution in Slovakia that provides medical care to children born just below this threshold of viability.
"We are referring to children born during the 22nd or at most, the 23rd week of pregnancy, with a birth weight of around 400 grams. All their organs are still under development, necessitating highly specialized care and a unique approach," explained Prof. Zibolen. Although the trend of premature births is on the rise in Slovakia, the number of extremely immature newborns born at the brink of viability remains relatively low.
The event was not only a platform for intellectual discourse and debates but also a celebration of notable contributions to the field. Prof. Mirko Zibolen and Prof. Katarína Maťašová received accolades from Dr. Milan Kucht, PhD, the chairman of the Slovak Pediatric Society, recognizing their outstanding work and contributions to neonatology in Slovakia.

COMENIUS UNIVERSITY WILL HOST TWO DAYS OF LECTURES FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Bratislava, 19 May 2023: What is it like to experience a university lecture? High school students...

During secondary school graduation week, schools have to keep junior students busy while seniors are taking their final exams. This is the perfect opportunity for Comenius University to show junior students how interesting further study can be and to let them try it themselves.
On the first day of the event, lectures in physics, medicine, pharmacy, chemistry and ethics are offered. Junior students can choose lectures in two locations depending on their interests. They can learn what microwaves and X-rays have in common; how important regular physical activity is; or how conflicts between genders evolved in the past.
Next Monday, they can listen to lectures on pedagogy, public policy, law or artificial intelligence. The two locations, Moyzes Hall and the ‘Amphitheatre’ of the Faculty of Law, will simultaneously host the following lectures: ChatGPT and similar large language models inside and out; Terraforming a habitable planet; The heroes of tragedies are always ordinary people; or From plant to medicine.
Those, who are undecided about their future study, can learn more at presentation stands of individual faculties in the vestibule of the university.
„Our university has been opening its doors to potential future students for eight years now. I am pleased that as the largest university we contribute to generating interest in certain fields thanks to our excellent lecturers. Secondary school students can now experience university for themselves, and in a few years they may choose to send applications to our university,“ says the Rector of Comenius University Marek Števček.

Professor Martin Škoviera is the Scientist of the Year 2022

Prof. Martin Škoviera from the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics, and Informatics at CU was awarded...

Prof. RNDr. Martin Škoviera, PhD., is a renowned Slovak mathematician and computer scientist who has earned a distinguished reputation through his work in the realm of discrete mathematics and theoretical computer science, with a special focus on graph theory. He is one of the founding figures of the globally recognized Slovak School of Topological Graph Theory, alongside Professors Širáň and Nedel. Additionally, he initiated the Graph Embeddings and Maps on Surfaces (GEMS) conference series, which has brought together experts in algebraic and topological graph theory from all continents of the world every four years since 1994.
His recent research activities have focused on the area of deep, long open and interrelated graph theory hypotheses about cycles, flows and graph coverages (e.g., Fulkerson’s hypothesis, Berge’s hypothesis, Tutte’s 5-flow hypothesis, the double-coverage hypothesis for cycles, and others).
In 2021 and 2022, he and co-authors from the cutting-edge research team he leads, as well as other collaborators, published
. These have been published in leading scientific journals in discrete mathematics and general mathematics journals or accepted for presentation at major computer science conferences.

The first group of papers ( 1- 5) develops and applies an innovative method of approaching these conjectures based on a surprising combination of projective geometry and group flow theory. The contribution of these papers is, among other things, the unification and significant generalization of previous results on the Berge hypothesis and the refutation of several related hypotheses, which has directed further research in this area.

The second group (6-10) consists of papers concerning various aspects of the above-mentioned hypotheses and, in particular, potential counterexamples to them – snark. Of particular note are papers 6-7 devoted to the morphology of snark, using a new method based on the analysis of 5-cycle clusters to classify them. In this way, all snarks up to 36 vertices (there are more than 64 million of them) can be divided into a small number of classes and the properties of each of them can be understood without the use of a computer, which was not possible before.

An outstanding accomplishment in theoretical computer science is the presentation of paper 4. at the prestigious STACS 2022 computer science conference in Marseille, known for its exceptional level of selectivity.

In Norway, Constitution Day is a widely celebrated national holiday. Almost every citizen gets involved in the festivities, reminding themselves of their country's freedom and independence. Cities see grand parades; people dress in traditional national costume, the Bunad, and wave miniature flags. Celebrations kick off early in the morning with festive breakfasts and various picnics, lasting nearly the entire day.
Approximately 270 Norwegians are currently studying at the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine at Comenius University in Martin. Despite being far from their homeland, these students don't miss out on the traditional Constitution Day celebrations. To keep the spirit of the holiday alive, the Association of Norwegian Students Abroad (ANSA) organized a celebration this year in Martin.
Slovak invention helping patients in Kenya

Bratislava, 16 May 2023: An invention of Slovak origin from Comenius University has been helping...

Q-VENT mini helps patients in Kenya who need oxygen therapy. It can also be used during the transport of patients from more distant areas to district or central hospitals. The emergency ventilator already exists in its third, improved version since its initial introduction in September 2021.
„When installing the machine it is necessary to travel to the field and get to know the actual circumstances and needs of the local community, to whose needs our assistance needs to be tailored," says Samuel Furka from Comenius University. "We do science to make the world a better place. In a remote hospital, five- to six-year old children stood by the road and begged for water, looking at us with hope,“ adds his brother Daniel Furka from CU.
Hospitals in Kenya lack basic necessities like medicines, medical equipment or even clean water, let alone the internet. „No matter how deficient the Slovak health care system is, the situation in the remote regions of Kenya is significantly worse. There is a lack of basic equipment and medical specialists, including doctors. Any innovative device can significantly improve the availability of health care,“ says Patrik Palacka, a physician from CU.
In addition to scientists Samuel and Daniel Furka from the Faculty of Natural Sciences, the Slovak team consisted of physician Patrik Palacka from the Faculty of Medicine, physician Adam Salama and medical student Tímea Baruníková. In Kenya, local doctors from district hospitals helped them implement the project. Support was also provided by SlovakAid and the Czech Military and Hospital Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem.
The Slovak team travelled thousands of kilometres across the savanna into the Kalacha desert region and the Marsabit mountains. They were accompanied by a National Geographic expedition team, with whom they helped each traverse swamps, deserts and travel along rock roads in their vehicles. In the more remote regions they were escorted by a local NGO, IREMO from Marsabit.
