Condensed Matter Physics Seminar - Marius Kadek (20.6.2023)

Tuesday 20.6.2023 at 14:00, Lecture roomi F2 272

Dr. Marius Kadek (Hylleraas Centre for Quantum Molecular Sciences, UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Tromsø, Norway):
First-principles modelling of 2D materials using relativistic all-electron Dirac-Kohn-Sham theory based on Gaussian-type orbitals

Abstract:
Two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as the transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMDs) films, are currently drawing intense interest from the materials community because they exhibit a wide range of remarkable properties, many of which are driven by strong spin--orbit coupling (SOC) effects that arise from the presence of heavy elements. Using Gaussian-type orbitals (GTOs) for treating electronic structures of 2D materials offers several advantages. First, the all-electron nature of the basis set opens avenues for the application of a range of methods common in quantum chemistry to allow a handle on the interaction of nuclear spins with electrons (needed for instance for spin Hamiltonian parameters) and accurate modeling of electron correlation effects. Second, techniques based on local basis functions can exploit algorithms that scale linearly with the system size enabling treatment of structures with large complicated unit cells. Third, adopting the GTO atom-centered basis, 2D materials can be studied without the need to introduce periodic images of the system in the direction perpendicular to the 2D plane, in contrast to the case when plane waves are employed. I will discuss a methodology for efficient and stable convergence of the electronic band structures of various phases of 2D TMDs using the four-component Dirac-Coulomb Hamiltonian and investigate large spin-orbit-induced splittings and the quantum spin-Hall effect found in TMDs.

organized by the Clinic of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at NUDCH and LF UK, took place on May...

The primary objective of the workshop was aimed at educating young doctors who are future pediatric oncologists, hematologists, and nurses from Central and Eastern Europe.
The educational sessions were conducted by a team of experienced doctors and nurses, with guidance from the distinguished expert in pediatric oncology, Prof. Stephen P. Hunger from Philadelphia, USA.
The workshop covered a range of important topics, including innovative approaches to the treatment of acute leukemias, brain tumors, vascular malformations, and rare tumors in pediatric patients.
A total of 105 young doctors and nurses from seven countries participated in the conference.
Pediatric oncology and hematology are areas of medicine that demand continual advancements in diagnostic techniques and therapeutic approaches. Consequently, workshops of this nature hold significant importance for the young generation in these fields. They serve as platforms that facilitate progress, knowledge exchange, idea sharing, and the establishment of international research collaborations for young professionals.

Five teachers receive awards for innovative teaching courses

Bratislava, 30 May 2023: On Friday, 26 May, five female teachers from four faculties of Comenius...

The nominees included 22 courses in Supplementary Pedagogical Studies and Extended Study taught at Comenius University. Five courses were short-listed for being examples of excellent practice and applying the principles of innovative pedagogy.
The CU Teachers' Academy Awards were presented to:
Klára Velmovská from the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics for her courses ‘School Experiments in Physics 1 and 2’;
Monika Šajánková from the Faculty of Arts for her course ‘Teaching of the German language’;
Zuzana Puchovská from the Faculty of Arts for her course 'Teaching of the French language’;
Martina Luptáková from the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport for her course ‘Pedagogical Communication’;
Henrieta Mázorová from the Faculty of Natural Sciences for her course ‘Teaching of geography using digital technologies’.
"The courses were evaluated on seven criteria including: student orientation; interconnecting teaching practice and theory according to the specific needs of the students; inclusion of new methods that students can implement in their pedagogical practice; and use of feedback and self-evaluation," explained Gabriela Pleschová, jury chair from the Centre for Pedagogical Support of the Faculty of Arts.
According to Lenka Sokolová from the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences, who is the lead researcher of this development project, teaching in this type of study is specific and often receives less attention compared to regular university studies. "Good teachers innovate their own teaching, and it is important to inspire each other and learn from each other. This award is intended to give a distinction to those who teach creatively and are willing to share their pedagogical experience with their colleagues," Associate Professor Sokolová explains the origins of the CU Teachers' Academy Award.
Supplementary Pedagogical Studies and Extended Study are offered at several faculties of Comenius University and are intended for practicing teachers who want to enhance their pedagogic qualification or expand the number of subjects they teach.

XXIX Slovak-Czech Conference on Hemostasis and Thrombosis

From May 18th to 20th, 2023, the Hotel Victoria served as the backdrop for the XXIX Slovak-Czech...

The conference was designed with an emphasis on the latest discoveries in hemostasis and thrombosis and their broader implications. As the conference presidents, Prof. Ján Staško, PhD., Head of the Clinic of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine at University Hospital Martin from Jessenius Faculty of Medicine at Comenius University in Martin, and Prof. Pavel Žák, PhD. from Hradec Králové, emphasized in their opening remarks, a key focus was the practical application of these new findings within the Slovak healthcare system.
Updating guidelines for managing thromboembolism and bleeding disorders is not only vital locally but also plays an essential role in interdisciplinary and international cooperation. This sentiment was underscored by the presence of distinguished guests such as Prof. Marguerite Neerman Arbez, M.D., Ph.D. from Geneva, Prof. Cedric Hermans, M.D., FRCP from Louvain, Belgium, Prof. Nigel Key, MB, ChB, FRCP from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA, and former president of the International Society for Thrombosis and Hemostasis, Prof. Guillermo J. Ruiz-Delgado, MD, FACP from Puebla, Mexico, who formerly served as president of the International Hematology Society, and others.
The illustrious guests were recognized by Prof. Andrea Čalkovská, DrSc., the Dean of the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine at Comenius University in Martin, for their significant contributions to the research, diagnostics, and treatment of hemostasis disorders. Prof. Nigel Key also had the opportunity to visit the genomics and prenatal diagnostic labs of Biomedical Centre at Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, where the genetic changes responsible for congenital hemostasis disorders are analyzed.
Since 2017, the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic has included the Clinic of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine in Martin (including the National Centre for Hemostasis and Thrombosis with the National Registry of Thrombophilic Conditions) in its list of centers for rare diseases in Slovakia, focusing on rare bleeding and thrombogenic disorders of hemostasis. The aforementioned registry contains data on individuals with a thrombophilic defect, including asymptomatic individuals who may face life-threatening complications, such as venous thromboembolism, in high-risk situations.
However, as Prof. Nigel Key highlighted, thanks to progress in research, new drugs are being developed, including direct oral anticoagulants and inhibitors of activated coagulation factor XI, which have anticoagulant effects with a lower risk of bleeding. Moreover, advances are being made in the treatment of hemophilia and other bleeding disorders, including targeted gene therapy.
