Graduate, Anton Zajac, has been Supporting his Alma Mater

Bratislava, 28 June 2023: A co-owner of ESET, physicist, philanthropist and entrepreneur, Anton...

Anton Zajac graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics and received the title of Doctor of Natural Sciences at the Department of Theoretical Physics in 1984. "The study of mathematical physics is beautiful, but it mainly teaches the graduate to solve problems in any field, including business. Without a high-quality education, today, I would not be able to return part of the money earned with great gratitude to the further development of the faculty," says the physicist and entrepreneur, who launched a number of Slovak startups, including the flying car AirCar or the software company Slido.
The Department of Inorganic Chemistry of the Faculty of Natural Sciences received a gift from him last month – an Edinburgh Instruments FS5 spectrofluorometer. "Scientists will use the device for a wide range of physical and chemical measurements," explains Professor Jozef Noga. This concerns, for example, the determination of the optical emission properties of new compounds prepared at the department, such as luminescent (fluorescent or phosphorescent) materials, molecular optical switches, dyes for solar cells, ion sensors. The device will also serve to assess the efficiency and selectivity of newly developed fluorescent labels in the imaging of biological structures or biologically relevant molecules by high-resolution microscopy.
This generous financial gift for the university was not the first. "In addition to this support, Mr. Zajac donated 25,000 euros to support young scientists to research new materials, for which we are very grateful," adds Professor Jozef Noga.
In the past, Anton Zajac also sponsored research projects to support the return of theoretical physicists to the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics, and Informatics with a financial sum of 250,000 euros. "The projects were aimed at supporting two scientists from the field of theoretical and mathematical physics. One of the supported currently works successfully at the faculty but is also known to the general Slovak public thanks to his popularization not only of physics, but also of other areas of science. In addition, he contributed tens of thousands of euros for a powerful computer that is used by employees and students," says Professor Jozef Masarik.
"Education and top research are the basis of Slovakia's prosperous economy. My support of education and science is a manifestation of personal responsibility for the future of our country, which is borne, to a certain extent, by each of us," said Anton Zajac.

The annual congress of the European Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology boasted approximately 8,000 participants, with over 400 lectures being presented. "This event is a leading global platform for minimally invasive procedures performed using radiological imaging methods," MUDr. Ján Sýkora, who accepted the award, explained the essence of CIRSE 2022.
According to Sýkora, "The award-winning lecture evaluated the long-term effectiveness of a new generation of endovascular techniques used in the treatment and prevention of cerebrovascular accidents, specifically addressing the narrowing of the cerebral artery."
The Best Scientific Paper Award is a testament to the significant scientific work carried out by the Radiological Clinic of the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine Comenius University in Martin, and University Hospital Martin, with an impact that is recognized across Europe. "This is an acknowledgment of the longstanding work by the Interventional Radiology team," added MUDr. Ján Sýkora.

Last Chance to Save the Student Town?

Bratislava, 27 June 2023: The Recovery and Resilience Plan of the Slovak Republic was probably the...

The Recovery and Resilience Plan of the Slovak Republic included 203.9 million euros to increase the performance of Slovak universities. By the end of the second quarter of 2026, the plan set a key goal to renovate at least 262,647 m2 of the area of universities and dormitories. However, Slovak universities and colleges are still waiting for the call. The call for comprehensive modernization of university buildings and dormitories was supposed to be issued in December 2022, but the deadline was repeatedly postponed. The chance of meeting the originally set deadline of the second quarter of 2026 decreases every day.
Comenius University prepared for the call. The university developed a project for a complex, in-depth reconstruction of a twelve-story dormitory in "Mlynská dolina" with an accommodation capacity of 1,345 people with a projected 63% primary energy savings. The project worth 34.5 million euros has a valid building permit, and the government included it in the development program of public works priorities for the years 2023-2025. However, the university can take further steps only after receiving financial support from the state.
"There was no investment in dormitories for decades. We are pushing a huge investment debt in front of us. Today, the amount of subsidy from the state is not even enough to cover the costs of our main activity, which is student education and scientific activity. We need 34.5 million euros for the reconstruction of Štúrak, while the amount allocated for capital expenditures is around 7 million euros per year - for all Slovak universities and colleges," explained Jana Duračinská, the Vice-Rector of CU for Property and Investments.
"Today we commemorate the 104th anniversary of the establishment of the largest Slovak university. However, we do not celebrate. Instead, we are thinking about what consequences the closure of the largest Slovak dormitory would lead to. A decrease in non-Bratislavan and foreign students would lower the ranking of the only Slovak university, which is regularly placed in the top 1000 of most international rankings. With the high cost of living in Bratislava, university education will become unaffordable for many students," said Marek Števček, the Rector of Comenius University. "If we don't offer affordable accommodations, even more students will head to countries that actively support the development of university infrastructure. This is the last chance: maintaining the largest student city is in the interest of all of Slovakia."
At today's press conference, representatives of Comenius University called for the state to act as soon as possible and announce the call for comprehensive modernization of university buildings and dormitories. This call must consider legislative and bureaucratic conditions in Slovakia. The University calls on the Government to immediately inform the public on whether it is willing to support the modernization of accommodation facilities directly from the state budget to what extent and within what time frame. CU also reminds the government that Bratislava universities and colleges were excluded from the possibility of applying for support from European structural funds in previous program periods.

SSSA Conference as part of the 14th year of the SSSA

On 23 June 2023, the Faculty of Law of Comenius University hosted the SSSA Conference as part of...

The conference was divided into two sessions (students of Bachelor's degree programmes and students of Master's degree programmes). A total of 13 students presented 14 papers. The conference was held in person, but the public could also join the conference online.
We would like to thank the representatives of cooperating institutions (Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic, Office for the Administration of Seized Property), attorneys and a representative of the Police Academy, as well as the faculty teachers, who took part in the committees. We would also like to thank the ELSA Bratislava Student Association for their help in organising the conference.
The participants and members of the committees agreed that the conference was enriching and the level of the presented papers was excellent. The conference was opened by the chairman of the SSSA Council, the vice-dean doc. Mgr. Ján Škrobák, PhD.
The Student Scientific and Specialized Activity Conference presented a unique opportunity where students from different grades came together to present their scientific work. Their papers were enriching and original, focusing on contemporary problems and seeking new solutions and discoveries.
The Student Scientific and Specialized Activity proves that the passion for scientific research and discovery has no boundaries.
The first prize for the Bachelor's degree programme went to Adam Briešt'anský with the paper "Legitimate Restriction of the Right of Assembly in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic" and the first prize for the Master's degree programme went to Bc. Anna Kocúrová with the paper "Criminal Sanctions of Serious Forms of Disinformation".
The successful students will represent our faculty at the Slovak-Czech round of the SSSA, which will take place in Prague in September.
Student Bc. Anna Kocúrová was briefly interviewed about the reasons behind her decision to write the paper and what she would recommend to other students who decide to write a paper.
Why did you decide to write a SSSA paper?
In fact, it was my supervisor, Assoc. JUDr. Andrej Beleš, PhD. with whom I discussed the topic of my diploma thesis who suggested me to take part in the SSSA. It's a great way to learn about the topic and to research issues that have not yet been explored or elaborated.
What skills or knowledge have you gained from taking part in this competition?
Definitely working with sources and researching more effectively. I also feel that I have improved my argumentation skills at least a little bit, as the work in question required relevant substantiation of the arguments presented.
What are the benefits for your personal and professional growth?
As far as professional growth is concerned, I would definitely like to pursue this topic further and therefore I consider participation in the SSSA as a good starting point for future research in this area. In the sphere of personal development, I consider training my perseverance in writing my paper and improving my discipline as beneficial. Reading one page, 15 times in a row and changing the word order because "something doesn't fit" was sometimes a good test of perseverance.
What are your impressions and feelings about the overall process?
It was a great experience. I like to "poke about" topics I am interested in - which in this case is the topic of misinformation. I really like to consult on this or that topic, because sometimes you get stuck in your comfort zone, and it is the discussion that can pull you out of that zone and give you new ideas.
Cooperation with the supervisor doc. JUDr. Andrej Beleš, PhD. also entailed these discussions and during the final discussion of the SSSA conference I had the opportunity to gather new perspectives on the topic through questions raised by the committee.
Of course, there were also stressful moments or situations when I was sitting in front of the PC and I couldn't write a single page of coherent text. But I think that's part of it. However, all in all, I can say that I have positive emotions associated with this experience - both in terms of the knowledge I have gained and the feeling of being able to form my own opinion, which is of course limited by the level of knowledge. I am, therefore, also looking forward to further develop this knowledge in the future.
If you were to give one tip to other students who are about to write a SSSA paper, what would you advise them to do?
That they shouldn't focus on multiple things at once. Many times I found myself in the situation that while writing the SSSA paper I was thinking about the assignments that I needed to do for the next week. As a result, one is much unfocused and feels so "overwhelmed". My advice is therefore to plan one's activities (e.g. from 13:00 - 15:00 I will work on the SSSA and from 16:00 - 18:00 on the school assignment for Tuesday) in order to avoid situations where one is thinking about everything else but writing the paper.

University Saves Energy Thanks to Number of Measures

Comenius University Bratislava carried out inspections at various university workplaces to see how...

In September 2022, CU’s Rector issued an instruction to save 10-15% of energies consumed by all parts of the university. The measures included, among others, installation of motion sensors for lighting, optimisation of light sources, installation of energy-saving luminaries, reduction of indoor temperatures during heating season, cutting the number of appliances and elimination of high-consumption appliances. Furthermore, buildings were put in energy-saving mode at certain times and remote work was more frequently used. The university also produced an awareness campaign to save energy aimed at staff and students.
The auditors set 2019 as the reference year for their energy-savings audit, because energy consumption in 2020 and 2021 was affected by the pandemic.
In 2022, demand for electricity at the Rectorate decreased against 2019. Even though the 2022 electricity consumption figures include two new sites, the Training and Education Facility in Modra-Piesok and CU Infocentre, total electricity demand of the Rectorate decreased by 15.5%. The rectorate’s natural gas consumption was lower by 10.1%. The demand of heat from the central heating system decreased by 6.5%.
Between 2019 and 2022, trends in energy consumption varied among the faculties. At three faculties, electricity consumption increased. Overall, however, consumption at 13 faculties decreased by 9.8%. Similarly, natural gas demand of the faculties and the rectorate decreased by 10.3%. Faculties needed 6.5% less heat from the central heating system.
University parts adopted their own, individual energy-saving measures. At specialized workplaces, the range of measures applied needed to reflect their specific needs – times of operation, need for lighting or maintaining constant temperatures in the interiors. Workplaces therefore implemented energy-saving measures differently and a number of other measures are being developed. Overall, however, Comenius University and particularly the Rectorate, were able to achieve substantial savings due to well-designed energy-saving measures.
