Comenius University is the best ranked Slovak university in the QS ranking

The top 5 ranked institutions in the new edition are the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford, Harvard University and Stanford University. Imperial College London, ETH Zurich, National University of Singapore, University College London and University of California Berkeley complete the top 10 in the ranking. Slovakia has 5 institutions in the current ranking, while Austria has 8, Hungary 11, the Czech Republic 16 and Poland 22. Slovak universities were represented by Comenius University Bratislava, Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, Technical University in Košice and Žilina University in Žilina. Slovak Agricultural University in Nitra did not make it into the evaluation this year. The QS ranking underwent a significant methodological transformation from the previous year and the new method of evaluation affected the ranking of Slovak universities. Official QS documents inform that the 2024 edition evaluated 2963 institutions from 104 locations and 1499 institutions were published. In the March evaluation by subjects, Comenius University was ranked in four and managed to reach the TOP 500 worldwide in all of them. Comenius University achieved the best ranking in the area of petroleum engineering research, in the 151st-160th place band. In the area of agriculture and forestry research, it ranked 351st-400th. In medicine it ranked 451st-500th and placed in the same band in physics and astronomy. *** Comenius University is the only Slovak university to be ranked in all important rankings. According to The Center for World University Rankings, it is 661st in the world. It reached the 771st-780th place in the QS World University Rankings. In the Round University Ranking, it is ranked 426th, in the education category it was ranked 178th. In ARWU ranking (Shanghai ranking) it placed in the 701st-800th place band. The prestigious Best Global Universities ranking ranks it 639th overall, and 266th in physics. The SCImago ranking lists it in 573rd place. In the NTU Ranking (National Taiwan University Rankings) it is ranked 701st-750th, while in the subject of physics it is ranked 301st-350th worldwide. In the ranking of The Three University Missions MosIUR it is in 284th place. THE WUR ranking puts Comenius University in the 1001st - 1200th place band overall. World University Ranking RankPro placed it in 222nd place in Europe.

The Faculty of Law of CU Bratislava (FLAW) recognises university's commitment to develop a creative, stimulating and dynamic study environment and therefore the Faculty of Law CU Bratislava entered into cooperation with the French Institute in Slovakia in the form of a Memorandum of Mutual Cooperation. The Memorandum was signed by the Dean of the FLAW doc. JUDr. Eduard Burda, PhD. and the Director of the French Institute Jean-Marc Cassam Chenaï.

City bylaw on accommodation tax was amended

Good news everyone! University management and other academic bodies protested the city bylaw on accommodation taxes, which was subsequently amended. As of now, the following enjoy an exemption from the city accommodation tax:

all full-time students,
students transferring from a bachelor degree to a master degree,
students transferring from a master degree to a doctoral degree,
all PhD students.

Introduction of a city tax

The City of Bratislava has unexpectedly introduced taxes for non-students (including those who have completed their bachelor's degree and are pursuing a master's degree, or have completed a master's degree and are pursuing a doctoral degree), employees and students over the age of 26. General binding regulation of the capital city 4/2023 introduces an accommodation tax of €3/night (everywhere except the Old Town, where the tax will be €3.5/night), but not more than for 60 overnight stays in a calendar year. The regulation is effective from 1 July 2023. It applies to the following categories of residents:

students over 26 years of age (almost all PhD students);
persons who are not currently full-time students (graduates, interrupted students, bachelor's graduates who have not yet enrolled in a master's degree programme, or master's graduates who have not yet enrolled in a doctoral programme);
employees of CU;
guests and visitors, unless they are students under 26, under 18 or over 70, or have a disability card;
non-students over the age of 18.

The above guests will see an increase in the price of summer accommodation during July and August of approximately €90/month, depending on the length of stay. We have approached city officials to request an exemption for college dormitories or groups of residents and are awaiting a response. We are concerned that the new city tax will financially threaten students and others from university backgrounds who are already barely bearing the high cost of living in the capital at a time of record inflation. For the time being, however, we must abide by the General Binding Ordinance in force from 1 July 2023. We would therefore like to call on you to pay as follows:

All residents affected by the regulation who will be staying in CU Mlyny during the summer are obliged to pay the accommodation tax for July 2023 in the amount of € 3 / night, so that the payment is credited to Mlyny dormitory´s account no later than 30.06.2023. The accommodation tax for August in the amount of € 3 / night must be credited to Mlyny dormitory´s account by 31.07.2023. The amount is sent to the same account and with the same variable symbol as the rent payment.
Residents who are affected by the regulation and do not stay in summer accommodation will pay the accommodation tax in accordance with the instructions for check in in the academic year 2023/2024.

We regret the increase of which we are informing you, but we have no choice but to comply. We therefore ask that you adhere to the payment guidelines. CU Mlyny

Presence of African reptiles in India confirms that these territories once belonged together

They named the new reptile Deccansaurus palaeoindicus. This lizard lived at the very end of the dinosaur era in the Deccan Traps created by volcanic activity. This volcanic activity in India, along with the asteroid impact, also had an impact on the extinction at the end of the Mesozoic. "The find sheds light on which lizards lived in India 66 million years ago. But it is interesting mainly because of what it tells us about India. It most likely represents the Cordyliformes group of lizards, which is found only in Africa and Madagascar," says palaeontologist, Andrej Čerňanský, from the Faculty of Natural Sciences. Today we would not find them anywhere else in the world. The occurrence of these reptiles in India, which is part of Asia, reveals a geographical conundrum. India has been connected to Asia only for the last 35-40 million years, and the Himalayas were formed when they collided. Originally, this subcontinent was part of the southern continents, the so-called Gondwana. In the Jurassic period, India was connected to Madagascar and Africa, and the connection with Madagascar continued until 88 million years ago. "66 million years ago, when Deccansaurus lived, India and Madagascar were still relatively close together. And this new reptile from a typically African line points to the geographical location of India and its origin and ancient connection with Africa," adds Andrej Čerňanský. Publication
