Seminar on Artificial Intelligence - Enda Howley, Patrick Mannion (6.11.2023)

Monday 6.11.2023 at 14:10, Lecture roomi I/9, online too

Assoc. Prof. Enda Howley (University of Galway):
An overview of using ML and simulation on a range of problem areas; Data Center Energy Optimisation, Traffic Signal Control, Cancer Cells and Cybersecurity
Abstract:
In this short presentation, I will briefly introduce the School of Computer Science at the University of Galway, and then give an overview of a range of problem domains where we have been successfully applying machine learning techniques to provide new insights. Primarily reinforcement learning and neural networks have been used, but we are always very open to using a range of possible tools to address challenges in these problem domains. We have explored challenges such as how virtual machines can be consolidated in a cloud data centre, as we know this can be a major drain on overall energy usage. We have explored aspects traffic signal control and the uses of reinforcement learning in that context. More recently we have been exploring problem domains in the diverse areas of cybersecurity, protein peptide identification and even cancer cell simulation.
Dr. Patrick Mannion (University of Galway):
Multi-objective reinforcement learning: an overview of theory and applications
AbstraCt:
This presentation will give an overview of the field of multi-objective reinforcement learning. The talk will cover the topic of reward design for AI systems and present arguments for and against multi-objective reward design. Real world examples/use cases will be used to motivate the development of multi-objective approaches, and to highlight the shortcomings of traditional single-objective reinforcement learning. Use cases covered will include public health decision making/pandemic management, 5G cellular networks and compute resource scheduling on embedded systems.

Doctoral colloquium - Endre Hamerlik (6.11.2023)

Monday 6.11.2023 at 13:10, Lecture room I/9

Endre Hamerlik:
Exploring Morphosyntactic Insights in Masked Language Models through Probing and Perturbations

Abstract:
Masked language models (MLMs) have gained significant popularity in the field of natural language processing due to their impressive performance across various tasks. To better understand how MLMs work internally, probing techniques are widely used. These techniques involve training classifiers to predict specific language features based on the hidden representations produced by MLMs.
In our research, we've chosen to focus on the morphosyntactic features found in input texts. Our main question is whether Large Language Models (LLMs), trained solely on MLM tasks, develop representations that capture aspects like part-of-speech and morphological categories.
To shed light on the dependencies of these representations, we've introduced controlled conditions where we provide modified inputs to the pretrained language model being studied. The quality and impact of these modifications have led to intriguing findings, which we'll be presenting at the PhD colloquium.

CU received the 2022 Responsible Public Procurer award

Comenius University Bratislava received the above-average rating of ‘A+, Very Responsible Public...

is a platform which collects and analyses public procurement data and this year it evaluated 4400 entities. Comenius University in Bratislava was one of the 236 public procurers that received an A+ rating. "Our rating shows that Comenius University's public procurement last year was performed in a professional manner, with emphasis on high efficiency and while respecting the rules of fair competition. You process orders significantly faster than average, and contracts are awarded to transparent and reliable suppliers," says the portal in its evaluation.
In recent years, Comenius University has introduced several new elements in its public procurement system. It was one of the first public institutions to begin using a dynamic purchasing system and an internal e-shop in 2021 to procure information and communication technologies. This system simplified things for users and saves a lot of public money. The university also attempts to apply social aspects and principles of green public procurement as much as possible and even beyond the minimum specified by law.
"The university received this distinction mainly thanks to the staff of the Central Procurement Office under the leadership of M. Dufala. I am very pleased that their detailed work received this form of recognition. Orders are procured swiftly, helping us save money not just on large projects, but in daily activities of the university." said the Rector of the University Marek Števček about the award.
In its evaluation the TRANSPAREX portal monitored indicators like savings achieved through public procurement, average duration of public procurement procedures, reliability of the public contracting authority, errors in the public procurement process, concentration of suppliers, and reputation risk to contracting authorities and suppliers.

Comenius University signs a training contract with Bory Hospital

Bratislava, 30 October, 2023: Students of CU’s Faculty of Medicine will complete a part of their...

This cooperation with the Bory Hospital is intended to give students of medicine an opportunity to train in the most modern hospital in Slovakia, to try out new technologies and experience the provision of health care on a level different from any other hospital in Slovakia. "We want to make sure that our students learn what medicine should look like in the 21st century," said Juraj Payer, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Comenius University.
From the academic year 2023/2024, students will complete their undergraduate education and specialisation training at eight departments of the Bory Hospital. These departments include nuclear medicine, emergency medicine, surgery, neurosurgery, gynaecology and obstetrics, urology, haematology and transfusiology, and otorhinolaryngology. During the first phase student training will primarily be the responsibility of doctors who previously worked at the Bratislava University Hospital (UNB) and had contracts with the Faculty of Medicine. There is, however, mutual interest in expanding the training capacity as additional departments are brought into operation at Bory Hospital. At the same time, cooperation with the Bory Hospital will relieve some pressure on UNB's clinical departments which are overburdened with demand.
According to Bory Hospital CEO Ľuboš Lopatka, the hospital greatly values this cooperation with the university and considers the signing of the training contract to be a milestone in its operation: "The hospital will make everything to make sure we don't let you down."
"I am very pleased that these contracts were signed and I am thankful to everyone who contributed. I see this as an immense opportunity and the beginning of a new era of cooperation," said CU Rector Marek Števček.
