Staff Week at Comenius University: we hosted partners from eight European countries

In the week from 16 to 20 October, our university hosted an Erasmus+ Staff Week – a training event...

The Bratislava Staff Week focused on internationalisation and foreign relations, and its participants were mainly staff dealing with international relations, Erasmus+ offices and those responsible for international cooperation. Colleagues from the Universities of Uppsala and Galway who are our partners in the ENLIGHT University Alliance also accepted the invitation.
The event was organised by the Erasmus+ Office of the International Relations Section of CU's Rectorate, who prepared an interesting agenda for the guests, presenting our university, its internationalisation plans, and examples of best practices. They also ran a workshop on how to overcome stereotypes while communicating with international students and teaching groups that include such students. They focused on the implementation of Erasmus+ principles in the current seven-year period. The informal part of the agenda included sight-seeing in and around Bratislava, including visits to the 'Červený Kameň' Castle, and the wine museum in Pezinok.
"The participants' evaluation of the event was largely positive. According to them, the most interesting events were the workshop and discussion on the implementation of the 'Blended Intensive Programs' (BIP), the presentation by colleagues from the ENLIGHT Office of the benefits that the university draws from its participation in the Alliance of European Universities, and the events of the International Erasmus+ Day, which has become a trusted tool for motivating students to participate in mobility at Comenius University," said Oliver Vavro from the Erasmus+ Office.
CU's International Relations Office has been toying with the idea of a CU Staff Week for some time. "I think we were finally motivated to organise it by participating in similar events at partner universities. We obtained the necessary know-how and became convinced that CU could dictate the pace of internationalisation due to its prestige and involvement in the ENLIGHT Alliance. These aspects also motivated our decision to organise Staff Week. Our university is a role model in mobility digitisation for Slovak, and other European universities. The response to this first Staff Week was positive and I can say, on behalf of our Erasmus+ Office, that we will continue to organise such events for colleagues from international departments at partner universities in the future," says Oliver Vavro.

Algebraic Graph Theory Seminar - Daniel Ševčovič (10.11.2023)

Friday 10.11.2023 at 13:00, Lecture room M/VIII (online too)

Daniel Ševčovič:
On the Moore-Penrose pseudo-inversion of block symmetric matrices and its application in the graph theory

Abstract:
In this talk we analyze the Moore-Penrose pseudo-inversion of symmetric real matrices with application in the graph theory. We introduce a novel concept of positively and negatively pseudo-inverse matrices and graphs. We also give sufficient conditions on the elements of a block symmetric matrix yielding an explicit form of its Moore-Penrose pseudo-inversion. Using the explicit form of the pseudo-inverse matrix we can construct pseudo-inverse graphs for a class of graphs which are constructed from the original graph by adding pendent vertices or pendant paths. This is a joint work with Soňa Pavlíková.
Those of you who are not able to attend in person or who are still uncertain about the safety of attending in person are welcome to attend via
.
Seminar of Theoretical Computer Science - Jiří Wiedermann (10.11.2023)

Friday 10.11.2023 at 11:00, Lecture room M/213

prof. RNDr. Jiří Wiedermann, DrSc. (Czech Academy od Science):
On the Power of Generative AI
Abstract:
In this lecture, we explore the purpose and potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in light of the current approaches to generative AI. We argue that the respective models can be seen as tools for acquiring and generating artificial wisdom, enabling us to make wiser decisions and behave more intelligently. Unlike earlier AI approaches, which focused on generating knowledge from data, contemporary language models have the ability to extract meaning from syntactic patterns and relate this meaning to real-world descriptions. This capacity reflects a form of cognition known in biology as 4E cognition, which emphasizes the embodied, embedded, extended, and enacted nature of intelligent behavior. We argue that contemporary large language models possess a form of illusory intelligence and illusory wisdom that has not been described in the literature before. By recognizing the potential of generative AI to generate and use wisdom, we can move beyond knowledge-centric approaches to AI and develop more nuanced models of intelligent behavior.

Seminar of Graph Theory - Shasha Zheng (9.11.2023)

Thursday 9.11.2023 at 9:50 hod., Lecture room C

Shasha Zheng:
Cubic graphical regular representations of finite simple groups
Abstract:
A graphical regular representation (GRR for short) of a group G is a Cayley graph of G whose full automorphism group is equal to the right regular permutation representation of G. In this talk, we study cubic GRRs of some families of classical groups and, based on some previously known results, confirm a conjecture made by Fang and Xia which asserts that with finitely many exceptions, every finite non-abelian simple group admits a cubic GRR.

Our Institute hosted California attorney Wendell Goddard

The Institute for Clinical Legal Education, Faculty of Law at Comenius University, has been pleased...

The Institute for Clinical Legal Education, Faculty of Law at Comenius University, has been pleased to host and welcome California attorney Wendell Goddard as a Fulbright Specialist for two weeks between October and November 2023. Wendell is a graduate of Yale University and Berkeley Law School at the University of California. He practiced law in California for over 40 years.

Dr. Mária Havelková oversaw Wendell's visit and was in charge of his activities here.

During his stay, Wendell gave several lectures and led discussions on various legal topics, including: (1) Truth, Free Speech, and Privacy, (2) Threats of Autocracy and Tyranny, (3) The War in Ukraine, (4) U.S. Politics including criminal and civil cases against Donald Trump, and (5) Partisan Divide and Gun Policy in the U.S. including discussions of the U.S. Supreme Court case of N.Y. State Rifle vs. Bruen and a 1989 concert with Joan Baez and Václav Havel in Bratislava. All of these lectures emphasized current news developments.

He led two class discussions on legal English and the use of English in legal matters. He also led discussions within the Legal Aid Studies course on the responsibility of lawyers in society, the importance of effective access to justice and legal aid, and the benefits of pro bono services for both individual lawyers and society at large. These classes were attended by home students and visiting students from 10 different countries.

During his visit, Wendell met with several law students and faculty to discuss their individual interests, concerns, and goals, including a consultation with a student writing his thesis on free speech. Wendell attended a lunch focused on the Fulbright program in Slovakia. In addition, he attended a meeting with members of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Slovakia regarding cooperation between UNHCR and the Institute for Clinical Legal Education.

The most important outcome of Wendell's visit was simply cultural exchange and internationalization. It is essential for people, including lawyers, to gain an understanding as to how other societies, and their legal systems, both differ and can also learn from each other. Wendell was able to transmit useful information to both students and faculty at Comenius, and to others from different countries who are studying here, as to how the U.S. legal system works and what are some significant issues and challenges facing the U.S., and the world, at this perilous time in global affairs. At the same time, Wendell gained valuable insights into the legacies of this country’s socialist history under communism.
