Doctoral colloquium - Daniel Kyselica (11.3.2024)

Monday 11.3.2024 at 13:10, Lecture room I/9

Daniel Kyselica:
Processing of light curves of satellites and space debris for the purpose of their identification
Abstract:
With the increase in space traffic in recent years, precise monitoring of space debris is necessary. Observations in the form of light curves provide us with information about an object’s physical properties including shape, size, surface materials and rotation. Publicly available databases contain a huge amount of gathered light curves that can be used to train machine learning models. Pieces of space debris can fall down to the Earth in a process called reentry, therefore 3D reconstruction of this event can bring more understanding of the physical processes.

Seminar of Graph Theory - Jozef Rajník (7.3.2024)

Thursday 7.3.2024 at 9:50 hod., Lecture room C

Jozef Rajník:
Cyclic Connectivity and Cages - Considering Connections
Abstract:
In this talk, we shall discuss connections between these two research topics, which have been widely studied but mostly separately. The cyclic edge-connectivity of a graph G is the smallest cardinality of an edge-cut that separates two cycles in G. It proved to be an important invariant of mostly cubic graphs and it emerges in various proofs and the study of smallest counter-examples. On the other hand, a (k,g)-cage is a smallest k-regular graph with girth g. We will show how cages and similar structures emerge in decomposing two cubic graphs with cyclic edge-connectivity k into two smaller cyclically k-connected cubic graphs. Moreover, we propose a conjecture that all (k, g)-cages are cyclically (k-2)g-edge connected, which is the larges possible value of cyclic connectivity. We prove this conjecture for (k,g)-cages with order at most roughly twice the Moore bound. This implies that the conjecture holds for some small pairs of (k,g) for which the order of a cage is not known including the famous hypothetical Moore graph of degree 57 and girth 5.
This is a joint work with Robert Lukoťka and Edita Máčajová.

CU RESEARCHERS DEVELOP NEW MOLECULAR PHOTOSWITCHES

Bratislava, 29 February, 2024: A team of scientists from the Faculty of Natural Sciences at...

Photoswitches have significant applications in areas such as advanced materials and photopharmacology. The new photoswitch belongs to the group of arylhydrazones, known for their exceptional thermal stability and efficiency in photoisomerization.
However, the researchers faced the challenge that previously known switches of this type were not as efficient in the visible light spectrum, which limited their practical use in biological systems. The new design improves efficiency closer to the visible light spectrum above 365 nm, thus opening exciting possibilities for their future applications in light-sensitive technologies.
"We have been researching photochemistry but we are still surprised how different the behaviour of molecules in their excited state can be from their ground state," said project leader Marek Cigáň.

CU has been carrying out a review of security measures and procedures since December

Comenius University Bratislava has long maintained contacts with experts on security and mental...

We have been carrying out a review of security measures and procedures since last December - starting with the building at Šafárik square. The findings and related measures will subsequently be implemented at other faculties and parts of Comenius University. Several years ago we installed turnstiles to regulate access to the Rectorate building and the university will also continue implementing similar access control measures in its other buildings.
Prevention is an important part of soft target protection and one of its forms is mental health support provided to the academic community. The aim of this support is to make sure that the people who experience difficult situations in their life know that professional help is nearby. Last year we increased the capacity of our Psychological Counselling Service and intend to continue supporting it. Immediately after the tragedy in Prague, the Psychological Counselling Service of Comenius University launched an online helpline for students and staff of the university which was also available during the holidays. A series of discussions with psychologists will take place during the summer semester in the "Štúrovňa" space at the Ľudovít Štúr Dormitory.

Doctoral colloquium - František Dráček (4.3.2024)

Monday 4.3.2024 at 13:10, Lecture room I/9

František Dráček:
Anomaly detection from TLE data

Abstract:
The burgeoning number of objects in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) poses a critical challenge for satellite operators, demanding robust collision avoidance measures. Although extensive databases track these objects, identifying anomalies within this data is crucial. This research investigates the application of machine learning methods to automatically detect anomalies in satellite data, potentially enhancing space situational awareness and safeguarding future space operations.

We are interested in your opinion on the quality of teaching at the Medical Faculty, UK in Bratislava!

Students can already evaluate lessons during the winter semester 2023/2024.

For the Medical Faculty of the Charles University in Bratislava, feedback from students on lectures, exercises or internships is very important. Therefore, we would like to ask you to fill out a student survey. Although you authenticate with your name and password as in AIS, it is not possible to identify you, the survey is anonymous. Please answer a few questions for us. Your evaluation is very important for the management of the faculty, heads of institutes and departments, as well as teachers. Let's find together the places that work great and that we can improve.

Algebraic Graph Theory Seminar - Jorik Jooken (1.3.2024)

Friday 1.3.2024 at 13:00, Lecture room M/IX (online too)

Jorik Jooken (Katholieke Universiteit, Leuven):
Exhaustive generation of edge-girth-regular graphs
Abstract:
An edge-girth-regular(v,k,g,lambda) graph is a k-regular graph of order v and girth g such that each edge is contained in precisely lambda girth cycles. These graphs generalize several well known classes of graphs such as edge-regular graphs, edge-transitive graphs and arc-transitive graphs.
In this seminar, we discuss an algorithm to exhaustively generate all edge-girth-regular graphs of a fixed order and improve several bounds on the minimum order of these graphs for certain tuples (k,g,lambda). In this seminar, we will also discuss implementation aspects that are not described in the paper.
