Jorik Jooken:
Exhaustive generation of edge-girth-regular graphs
Abstract:
An edge-girth-regular(v,k,g,lambda) graph is a k-regular graph of order v and girth g such that each edge is contained in precisely lambda girth cycles. These graphs generalize several well known classes of graphs such as edge-regular graphs, edge-transitive graphs and arc-transitive graphs. In this seminar, we discuss an algorithm to exhaustively generate all edge-girth-regular graphs of a fixed order and improve several bounds on the minimum order of these graphs for certain tuples (k,g,lambda).
University Hospital Martin Launches Slovakia’s First Robotic Chest Surgery Program

University Hospital Martin has made a significant leap in medical innovation by becoming the first...

Utilizing the state-of-the-art Da Vinci Xi robotic system, the hospital's surgeons are now performing highly precise and advanced chest surgeries.
Assoc. Prof. Anton Dzian, PhD., a thoracic surgeon at University Hospital Martin and the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University in Martin, praised the system’s capabilities. "This minimally invasive approach requires training, but the benefits are immense. The robotics provide the surgeon with an excellent 3D HD view of the operative field, magnified several times, offering a wealth of detail. Robotic instruments allow for precise movements that mimic the human hand," he explained.
Dzian emphasized that robotics doesn't replace surgeons but enhances their work by providing a detailed, almost microscopic view of the operative field. The hospital has already successfully performed wedge resections of lung tissue, removing parts of the peripheral lung parenchyma with metastatic tumors, and mediastinal cyst removals as its initial robotic chest surgeries.
These were followed by more complex procedures such as lobectomies and segmentectomies, utilizing the robotic platform’s fluorescence imaging capabilities to view tissue in a new light.
The pioneering chest surgeries at University Hospital Martin's Robotic Surgery Center were supervised by proctor and experienced robotic surgeon, MUDr. Ján Kolařík from Prague's Motol Hospital.
Kolařík highlighted the importance of mastering the robot's control, as working with the system requires more intricate preparation than traditional surgery. "We started with e-learning and observing operations at the robotic center. The surgeons then moved on to a simulator to gain manual dexterity, try out the functions of switching between different tools and arms, as well as managing the camera and energy technologies used to stop bleeding," he detailed.
Kolařík revealed that training continues with tissue model operations at the training center, allowing the surgeon and the operating team to practice initial and more extensive chest procedures. The proctoring for thoracic surgery at University Hospital Martin's Robotic Center took place in February.
The Da Vinci Xi robotic system is available to University Hospital Martin through a collaboration with the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University in Martin, funded by European Structural and Investment Funds. Both the hospital and the faculty aim to use research infrastructure for scientific activities, including new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in education and healthcare.
Thanks to the outstanding partnership between the two institutions, patients at the University Hospital Martin now have access to state-of-the-art robotic surgery, currently in use.

University Hospital Martin Opens Groundbreaking Robotic Surgery Center

On Wednesday, March 6, 2024, University Hospital Martin heralded a new era in surgical care with...

This advanced facility became operational thanks to a collaborative effort with the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University in Martin, which secured the Da Vinci Xi robotic system through European Structural and Investment Funds. The hospital and faculty share a vision to leverage research infrastructure for scientific research, including new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, within education and healthcare delivery.
Professor Marek Števček lauded the opening, saying, “I am proud of the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, which sets a standard across Slovakia. This facility marks the convergence of science, research, innovation, and patient care, epitomizing the essence of university healthcare.”
The state secretary, MUDr. Ladislav Slobodník, highlighted the benefits of minimally invasive surgery, noting that the latest generation Da Vinci system allows surgeons enhanced operational capacity and patients shorter recovery times and quicker return to everyday life.
Professor MUDr. Ján Švihra, PhD., a pioneer of robotic surgery at University Hospital Martin and the vice dean of the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, played a crucial role in realizing this project. “Favorable conditions in 2019 through European Structural Funds made the acquisition of the Da Vinci robot possible, aiming to reduce the accessibility barrier to minimally invasive surgical treatment post-COVID-19 pandemic. I believe the outcome will greatly benefit scientific development, education, and our patients.”
Assoc. Prof. Kamil Biringer, head of the Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinic at University Hospital Martin and vice dean of the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, shared insights into the advantages of robotic operations. “The system enables surgeries without the surgeon being directly over the surgical wound, minimizing any risk of infection transmission. It even allows for remote telemedicine connections, offering immense educational benefits to medical staff. Currently, University Hospital Martin has seven complete operating teams from various specialties.”
The ceremony was also attended by Erika Jurinová, Chairwoman of the Žilina Self-Governing Region of the Slovak Republic, who emphasized the importance of robotics as the technical field of the future. “In the Žilina region, we aspire to lead Slovakia not only in the use but primarily in the education, development, construction, and programming of robots for various practical applications. Therefore, I am delighted that patients in Martin will now have the opportunity to experience and benefit from robotics in a complex field such as surgery.”
Currently, the robotic system at University Hospital Martin is utilized by departments of surgery, urology, gynecology, and most recently, thoracic surgery, with plans to expand its use to other areas.
