BIP_Management Simulation in Tourism KU Winter School 2023/24

BIP - Blended Intensive Program – new intensive Erasmus format.

Our time at the KU Eichstätt-Ingolstadt Winter School in Germany was really rewarding. We took part in a very practical learning process where students managed fictitious hotels, blending theory with real-world scenarios. Working in international teams broadened students horizons and pushed them beyond their comfort zones. Highly recommended for a hands-on and global educational experience.
Peter Marcin & Milos Mrva

Taking part in this winter school was an amazing experience and lesson. I learned a lot about management in the hospitability industry, working in international teams, and it was also a lot of fun!
Alexandra Diabelkova / student

The winter school was stepping out of my comfort zone that helped me grow a lot. I faced new challenges and worked with different people in hospitality management. Ultimately, the winter school enriched my study experience.
Júlia Lošak / student

Seminar of Department of Algebra and Geometry - George Lusztig (24.5.2024)

Friday 24.5.2024 at 11:00, Lecture room C

George Lusztig (MIT):
Fourier transform as a triangular matrix
Abstract:
Fourier transform is an isomorphism of order 4 from the vector space of square integrable functions on real numbers to itself. In late 1800's Hermite described a complete set of eigenvectors of this linear map (involving the Hermite polynomials). We can replace this vector space by the vector space of complex valued functions on a vector space of dimension 2n over the field with two elements with a nondegenerate symplectic form. This vector space has again a natural Fourier transform which plays a role in the study of representations of finite groups of Lie type. We are interested in proving an analogue of Hermite's results in this context. But now instead of making the matrix of Fourier transform diagonal we will make it only triangular.

Over the course of three days, from March 21 to 23, 2024, these dedicated students helped to collect a remarkable total of €12,122.41.
The fundraiser was organized to coincide with the approaching World Hemophilia Day, observed annually on April 17, highlighting the global effort to raise awareness and support for those affected by this and similar conditions. Conducted in shopping centers in Martin and Žilina, the event drew participation from students across various years of study, each contributing to the campaign's overwhelming success.
Among the participants were second-year students Andrej Tabak, Veronika Spodniaková, Sarah Margočová, Marta Kekeláková, Alžbeta Hrubjaková, and Lívia Rošaková; third-year students Simona Baťková, Miriam Meňhertová, Veronika Červencová, Klára Závadská, Bianka Vojteková, and Natália Halečková; and fourth-year students Jana Baťková, Michaela Semivanová, Zuzana Štefančíková, Mária Piskorová, Timea Urbanová, and Nikola Nogová.
Special thanks were also extended to Vanesa Chudjaková, a sixth-year student who played a crucial role in organizing the volunteers for this event.
The funds raised from this charitable endeavor will be utilized to support rehabilitation and educational stays for patients suffering from congenital bleeding disorders. This initiative not only aids those in immediate need but also fosters a greater understanding and empathy towards individuals living with these conditions.
Dr. Tomáš Šimurda, PhD., a member of the National Committee of the Slovak Hemophilia Society and the coordinator of this fundraising campaign in Slovakia, expressed heartfelt gratitude to all the participants and supporters who made this event a resounding success.

Seminar of Department of Theoretical Physics - Leevi Leppäjärvi (26.3.2024)

Tuesday 26.3.2024 at 14:00, Lecture rook F2/125

Leevi Leppäjärvi (Institute of Physics SAS):
Introduction to quantum information and quantum cryptography
Abstract:
In this talk we will embark on a captivating journey into the intricate realm of quantum information and quantum cryptography. First we will delve into the foundational principles of quantum mechanics, where particles exist in superposition, and entanglement defies classical intuition. Then we start to unravel some of the mysteries behind quantum cryptography, where the laws of physics enable secure communication beyond the reach of classical eavesdropping. In particular, we will explore quantum key distribution, a groundbreaking protocol harnessing quantum properties to exchange cryptographic keys with unbreakable security guarantees. In this process we will also show that arbitrary quantum bits cannot be copied resulting in the celebrated no-cloning theorem.

Artificial intelligence in practice

On 20 March, 2024, lectures were held at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics for...

Martin Hyben, a researcher from the KInIT Institute, who specialises in machine learning and artificial intelligence, and Michal Malý, co-founder and director of the artificial intelligence section at the Photoneo company, lectured students from our ENLIGHT partner universities: University of Tartu, Uppsala University, University of Göttingen, University of Groningen, Ghent University and University of Galway, as well as from Comenius University.
KInIT used LLM (Large Language Models) to create tools that might help journalists verify information. The tools consist of text detectors in multiple languages and fact-checking systems. Using these systems to fact-check information on social networks, they discovered that people share the most disinformation on Youtube channels. The authors are now working on improving this situation.
Photoneo created the BRIGHTPICK mobile robotic system, the first and only fully automated order picker for e-commerce and online food retailers, that robotically picks and consolidates orders directly in the warehouse aisles, irrespective of warehouse size. In contrast to other fulfilment robots, it does not need to travel back and forth to centralized picking stations, which means faster picking and higher throughput.
The lectures will go on until 22 March, 2024. On Monday, 18 March, students were given a lecture on the basic concepts of artificial intelligence, and the impact of artificial intelligence on sustainable development goals.
The lectures help students grasp the basic concepts of artificial intelligence and machine learning, the main concepts of artificial neural networks, probabilistic calculations and reinforcement learning, while offering an overview of problems that artificial intelligence is capable of solving, and learning about social issues related to artificial intelligence.

This innovative event is designed for first to third-year students of general and dental medicine, aiming to enhance their practical and theoretical knowledge in a fun and interactive environment.
For the first time, the competition welcomed participants from other faculties outside of Martin, expanding its reach and fostering a broader exchange of skills and knowledge. This year's edition spanned two days, with Friday dedicated to practical workshops preparing the teams for the competition's challenges.
The contest kicked off on Friday evening with a simulated mass casualty incident, putting the students' skills and teamwork to the test under pressure. Saturday's schedule was packed with diverse tasks set by representatives from the faculty's institutes and clinics at University Hospital Martin, who also served as judges for the event.
The winners of the 2024 MedGames Junior were:
