CU IS AMONG THE TOP 12% UNIVERSITIES IN THE WORLD

Bratislava 3 May 2024: Comenius University Bratislava (CU) was ranked among the top 12%...

The ranking, which collects data since 2021, is published by Study Abroad Aide (SAA) from South Korea. The ranking is aimed at aspiring international students. This year's ranking evaluated 8056 private and public universities from 69 countries of the world.
CU was ranked 934th and achieved the best ranking among 28 Slovak universities. The three best ranked universities from Slovakia also include the University of Žilina (1172nd place) and the University of Pavol Jozef Šafárik in Košice (1245th place).
University of Oxford is the best ranked university in the SAA ranking while Harvard University was ranked second and the
was ranked third.
(4th place) and University of Cambridge (5th place) complete the top five universities in this ranking.
The ranking only evaluates universities that are accredited higher education institutions, offer bachelor's and master's study programs, have an official website, and publish their tuition fees. Other criteria that are considered include the university’s location, type, tuition fees, required level of English knowledge and the university's English-language website.

Jessenius Med Students Host 'Teddy Bear Hospital' for Kids

In a heartwarming initiative aimed at demystifying medical procedures for young children, students...

During their visit, the medical students transformed the "Ladybugs" classroom into a series of makeshift clinics where they treated "patients"—stuffed teddy bears with various ailments. In the improvised surgical area, a teddy bear suffered from a broken leg, while the ear and eye clinic dealt with another bear's poor vision and hearing. In the general pediatric clinic, a teddy bear complained of a stomachache, and another was treated for a severe allergic reaction caused by a bee sting in the emergency room.
Under the guidance of future doctors, the children learned about various diagnostic methods and tried their hands at some basic medical procedures. The students demonstrated how to apply bandages, listen to heartbeats with a stethoscope, conduct eye examinations, perform elementary resuscitation techniques, and discussed healthy eating habits.
The "Teddy Bear Hospital" project is an ongoing endeavor by the Jessenius Faculty students, who visit various kindergartens free of charge. Each session lasts approximately 45 minutes, with activities tailored to the age of the children, ensuring that each interaction is both educational and comforting.

Algebraic Graph Theory Seminar - Róbert Jajcay (26.4.2024)

Friday 3.5.2024 at 13:00, Lecture room M/IX (online too)

Róbert Jajcay:
From Orientably Regular Maps to Cyclic Complementary Extensions of Finite Groups

Abstract:
Orientably regular maps are defined via the existence of a group of orientation preserving automorphisms acting regularly on the set of darts of the map. It is therefore perhaps not surprising that the study of orientably regular maps led to insights in finite permutation group theory. The concept of a skew-morphism - developed in the context of regular Cayley maps and introduced more than 20 years ago - constitutes one such example bridging topological graph theory and cyclic complementary extensions of groups. While automorphism groups of regular Cayley maps can be easily seen to be cyclic complementary extensions of their underlying groups via special structure preserving skew-morphisms, it is a bit more surprising that all skew-morphisms give rise to cyclic complementary extensions; which became known under the name of skew-products. It is even more surprising that all cyclic complementary extensions give rise to a skew-morphism. Nevertheless, not all cyclic complementary extensions are skew-products which left a gap in our understanding of cyclic complementary extensions of finite groups.
Recently, together with Kan Hu, we have been able to fill this gap by introducing a generalization of the power function of a skew-morphism which we call an extended power function, and by finding a universal construction of cyclic complementary extensions of groups via skew-morphisms and their extended power functions. We have shown that all cyclic complementary extensions are constructed in this way which means that in order to classify cyclic complementary extensions of a specific finite group it suffices to classify its skew-morphisms and their extended power functions. In view of this, we started investigating extended power functions of special classes of skew-morphisms, and completed the classification of extended power functions of group automorphisms of cyclic groups.

Seminar of Department of Theoretical Physics - Eugenia Boffo (7.5.2024)

Tuesday 7.5.2024 at 14:00, Lecture rook F2/125

Eugenia Boffo:
On the N=2 spinning particle
Abstract:
The spinning particle, which is a relativistic massless particle with a supersymmetric worldline, is the particle analogue of the Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz superstring. As such, it can serve as a playground for the understanding of second quantized string theory. Within the context of Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin cohomological techniques, different sectors arise for the representation of the bosonic ghosts associated with supersymmetry, and are distinguished by different picture numbers. After explaining some basics of differential geometry of supermanifolds, I will discuss BRST cohomology, which emerges also from the Poincare'-Hilbert series (besides just from direct computation). Such series is a very convenient means to compute the partition function and extract various kinds of information. For the case under inspection, the specific results will be highlighted.
Next I will turn to the second quantization of the spinning particle, which yields a (gauge) field theory. BRST can only reproduce the classical free BV theory, and leaves one to wonder whether it would be possible to get the interactions too. After all, homotopy Lie algebras are known to help in this regard. Moreover, in open string field theory the interactions have already been constructed thanks to the work of Witten (Phys. Rev. D 46, 5467 (1992)). In the case of a spinning particle, I will discuss the necessity of a different approach, that relies instead on the existence of a convenient deformation of the BRST operator by fields. All concepts shall be sufficiently defined and explained.

Doctoral colloquium - Radovan Gregor (6.5.2024)

Monday 6.5.2024 at 13:10, Lecture room I/9

Radovan Gregor:
Mirroring mechanisms for trustworthy human-robot interaction
Abstract:
The discovery of a group of neurons in the premotor cortex of macaque monkeys that became active both when the monkeys performed certain actions and when they observed another individual performing the same actions proposed the existence of a neural system that "mirrors" the actions of others, giving rise to a name Mirror Neuron System (Rizzolatti G., 1992). This discovery has had a major impact on our understanding of the neural basis of social cognition and has been the subject of numerous studies.
This presentation will investigate the use of mirroring mechanisms for establishing trustworthy human-robot interaction. Specifically, it will focus on designing a MNS model based on neural networks, implementing it in a humanoid robot NICO and evaluating its effectiveness in human-robot interaction scenarios.
