ESCP SPRING WORKSHOP OF CLINICAL PHARMACY IN BRATISLAVA

On April 25 - 26, 2024, the European professional-scientific workshop on clinical pharmacy took...

The European Society of Clinical Pharmacy (ESCP) is an international organization covering clinical pharmacists working in clinical practice and academia in Europe. ESCP organizes annual international meetings of clinical pharmacists, including two-day spring workshops, which focus more narrowly on specific topics from clinical practice, and broader-themed symposiums in the autumn. More than 100 experts and enthusiasts of clinical pharmacy attended the spring symposium in Bratislava.
Pharmacotherapy Challenges in the Developing Years: From Conception to Adolescence
The event was dedicated to very current and demanding topics that clinical pharmacists often have to deal with. "Treatment during pregnancy not only affects the mother but also the developing fetus. Changes in the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in the mother´s body can also change the effect of medicines. Moreover, during breastfeeding, many drugs pass into breast milk. When is it possible to continue breastfeeding and when to stop it? Challenges also concern the treatment of pediatric patients. As we have seen, a child is not a small adult and many drugs lack sufficient data on the effectiveness and safety of treatment in this group. Often, drugs are used 'off-label' – how to proceed in such cases?" says ESCP President Dr. Monika Lutters (Switzerland) and ESCP Vice President Dr. Anna Oleárová (Slovakia).
The program consisted of 5 plenary lectures by experts from the University of Norway, hospitals in Switzerland, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and the National Toxicology Information Center (NTIC) in Slovakia. Topics of lectures focused on the safety and effectiveness of pharmacotherapy in pregnant and lactating women, adjustments to pharmacotherapy in the given period, drugs affecting male fertility, intoxications in pediatric patients, and management of ADHD treatment (not only) in pediatric patients.
The conference also included 4 practical workshops, where participants focused on therapeutic monitoring of drug levels in pregnant women and pediatric patients, as well as new innovative tools for predicting appropriate drug dosages, reviewing useful databases in the area of pharmacotherapy risk during pregnancy and lactation, and a tool that trains healthcare professionals in identifying medication errors and thus preventing them in neonatology.
During the conference, discussions and presentations of new scientific findings took place in the form of posters and poster presentations from academic field and clinical practice.
After the enriching program on the first day of the conference, a welcome reception was held at the Primate's Palace in Bratislava, followed by a guided tour in the Old Town of Bratislava, led by certified guide Dr. Zuzana Kilianova, one of the conference organizers.
Participation of students of Faculty of Pharmacy, Comenius University Bratislava
Attendees of the conference were also students of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Comenius University Bratislava, who are interested in clinical pharmacy and pharmacology and winners of the Clinical Skills Event competition, which took place in March during the Pharmaceutical Education and Career Week at the Faculty of Pharmacy of Comenius University in Bratislava and the University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Kosice.
The Spring Workshop was under the patronage of the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic and the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy of Comenius University, Prof. Jan Klimas
The event was primarily organised thanks to the Vice President of ESCP and President of the Section of Clinical Pharmacy (SFS) Dr. Anna Oleárová, Dr. Zuzana Kiliánová, Dr. Gabriel Dóku, Dr. Natália Stollárová, who is also a member of the ESCP subgroup committee dedicated to young clinical pharmacists, and the entire ESCP committee.

Doctoral colloquium - Ján Pastorek (13.5.2024)

Monday 13.5.2024 at 13:10, Lecture room I/9

Ján Pastorek:
Partial automorphisms and asymmetry level of graphs
Abstract:
Graphs consisting of nodes interconnected by links can express underlying structure of many things we encounter. These graphs frequently exhibit "asymmetric" features but also various kinds of "symmetry". What is the relation between "symmetry" and "asymmetry" of graphs?
Understanding the complex relationships among asymmetric graphs, regular graphs, and graphs with non-trivial automorphisms is challenging. The majority of graphs are well-known to be asymmetric, i.e., having no non-trivial automorphisms. Interestingly, almost all regular graphs, where all "highly-symmetric graphs" concentrate, have only trivial automorphisms, with the Frucht graph being one of the smallest. Notably, removing a single vertex from a graphical regular representation, which captures one of the notions of symmetry, can yield an asymmetric graph. On the other hand, there exist minimal asymmetric graphs where each vertex-induced subgraph possesses non-trivial automorphisms. But already any two-vertex induced subgraph in a graph has non-trivial automorphism.
These findings highlight the importance of partial automorphisms, which are isomorphisms between two induced subgraphs of a graph. Our research delves into the properties of the partial automorphisms of graphs, focusing on the measure of (a)symmetry of a graph, defined as the ratio of the largest rank of a non-trivial partial automorphism to the graph's order. In our presentation, we will discuss computational and theoretical insights from our research in this area.

Mikhail Belogolovskii:
Nanoscale magnetic sensing using Josephson junctions
Abstract:
Imaging very small magnetic fields at the nanoscale is a cutting-edge research topic with broad impacts from fundamental physics to new emerging technologies. Superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) are the current commercial "gold standard" in low-field magnetometry with unprecedented sensitivity and the ability to measure any quantity that can be efficiently converted to magnetic flux. However, downscaling SQUIDs to the 100 nm scale and below has encountered some principal challenges. In the lecture, I discuss the operating principles of the Josephson junction, the heart of superconducting electronic devices, and those of DC SQUIDs, formed by two Josephson junctions connected in parallel to form a closed superconducting circuit. Our original solution to the problems faced by SQUIDs is based on the creation of a single Josephson device with enhanced magnetic field sensitivity, in which the insulating intermediate layer between two superconducting films is replaced with a periodic heterostructure formed by ferromagnetic and normal metal nm-thick films. We believe that such Josephson hybrids are promising platforms for realizing Majorana zero modes.

Algebraic Graph Theory Seminar - György Kiss (10.5.2024)

Friday 10.5.2024 at 13:00, Lecture room M/IX (online too)

György Kiss (ELTE, Budapest, Hungary and University of Primorska, Koper, Slovenia):
Geometric constructions of small regular graphs with girth 5 and 7
Abstract:
The cage problem is a classical problem in extremal graph theory. A (k,g)-graph is a k-regular graph with girth g. A (k,g)-cage is a (k,g)-graph of minimum order. A general lower bound on n(k,g), known as the Moore bound, is obtained by counting the vertices whose distance from a vertex (if g is odd), or an edge (if g is even) is at most |(g-1)/2|. Graphs attaining this bound are called Moore graphs. For g=3,4 Moore graphs are the complete, and complete bipartite graphs, respectively. Moore graphs are rare for g>4. When g is even, then there exists a k-regular Moore graph with girth g=2r>4 if and only if there exists a finite generalized r-gon of order (k-1,k-1), and the graphs are the incidence graphs of the generalized polygons. When g>4 odd, then there exist Moore graphs only for g=5 and k=3,7 and possibly 57.
When g=5, several graphs were constructed by complicated manipulations of the incidence graph of PG(2,q), the finite projective plane of order q. Some vertices are removed from these (q+1,6)-cages, after that matchings or cycles are added to the neighbours of the removed vertices to get back regularity.
In this talk we briefly summarize the most important geometric properties of generalized quadrangles, projective, affine and biaffine planes and present some simple constructions for small (k,5)- and (k,7)-graphs.
