Contract Signed for New Hospital Construction in Martin

On Wednesday, June 5, the University Hospital Martin signed a contract with the contractor for the...

The winning bidder of the public procurement was a consortium of suppliers, including ADIFEX a.s., HORNEX, a.s., DSC, a.s., and SYTIQ a.s., with a bid of 375 million EUR excluding VAT. The signing ceremony at the University Hospital Martin was attended by Slovakia's Minister of Health, Zuzana Dolinková, Deputy Prime Minister for Recovery Plan and Knowledge Economy, Alena Sábelová, and the Dean of Jessenius Faculty of Medicine at Comenius University, Professor Andrea Čalkovská.
The initial construction phase of the new hospital is scheduled to take 26 months, with a completion date of June 30, 2026. The final "full fit-out" phase, which includes equipping the hospital and obtaining the necessary approvals, is expected to be completed by the end of December 2028.
The University Hospital of St. Martin in Martin has faced numerous challenges since its inception. The Slovak government decided on July 1, 2022, to fund the construction of the new University Hospital of St. Martin using resources from the Recovery and Resilience Plan. The government initially allocated 330 million EUR excluding VAT for the project, which was later revised to 256.7 million EUR excluding VAT in 2023. The government has committed to covering any additional costs from the Recovery and Resilience Plan, EU funds, the Slovak state budget, or other alternative financing sources.
The new University Hospital of St. Martin will feature its own outpatient, diagnostic, and therapeutic departments, a separate pediatric wing, and an emergency department with a trauma center designed for both children and adults. The hospital will have 660 beds, mostly in single rooms, providing an ideal setting for modern healthcare delivery. The facility's unique design, advanced logistics, and sophisticated IT infrastructure, including smart solutions, will simplify and enhance the work of healthcare professionals and improve the patient experience.
The project is designed to have minimal environmental impact. Equipped with the latest technologies, the hospital will offer cutting-edge medical care to patients and provide optimal conditions for training future healthcare professionals, as it will serve as a teaching base for students of the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine at Comenius University.

CU IMPROVES ITS POSITION IN THE QS WORLD UNIVERSITY RANKINGS

Bratislava, 5 June 2024: Yesterday, QS World University Rankings (QS WUR) published its ranking of...

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Imperial College London, University of Oxford and Harvard University are the best-ranked universities worldwide.
Five universities from Slovakia were ranked in addition to CU. Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice maintained its 851st-900th position from last year. The Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, the Technical University in Košice, the University of Žilina in Žilina and the Slovak Agricultural University in Nitra were all ranked in the 1001st-1200th place band.
The QS WUR ranking evaluates universities
with different weights: academic reputation (30%), employer reputation (15%), faculty student ratio (10%), citations per faculty (20%), international student ratio (5%), international faculty ratio (5%), employment outcomes (5%) and sustainability (5%).
QS World University Rankings is one of the leading world rankings and has been evaluating universities since 2004. This year, the ranking published a list of 1,503 top higher education institutions from 106 locations around the world.
"University rankings are only an indicative indicator and we tend to take them with a large grain of salt. Nevertheless, I am pleased that Comenius University has improved its QS WUR ranking compared to the previous year. This comes as a direct result of the enormous commitment of our researchers, who deliver world-class results under challenging economic conditions," says CU rector Marek Števček.

***
Comenius University is the only Slovak university which regularly appears in all prominent rankings. It reached the 1001st–1200th place band in World University Rankings. In the Round University Ranking, it ranked 589th overall and 351st in the education category. In ARWU ranking (Shanghai ranking) it placed in the 901st-1000th place band. The prestigious Best Global Universities ranking ranks it 639th overall, and 266th in physics. The SCImago ranking lists it in 1176th place. In the NTU Ranking (National Taiwan University Rankings) it is ranked 851st-900th overall and 351st-400th in physics, worldwide. It ranks 286th in The Three University Missions MosIUR, and THE Impact Rankings puts it in the 601st-800th place band. THE WUR ranking puts Comenius University in the 1001st - 1200th place band overall. World University Ranking RankPro ranked it 147th in Europe.

Comenius University received accreditation according to new standards

On 16 May 2024, the Slovak Accreditation Agency for Higher Education adopted a decision that the...

The decision marks the culmination of a process which took several years and to which all parts and facilities of the University contributed. The agency assessed the documents submitted by CU, and an expert working group visited its faculties and facilities. The agency then developed an evaluation report, in which it evaluated compliance with the standards and formulated recommendations for further improvement. When adopting the decision, the executive board of the agency studied the provided documents and considered CU’s response to the evaluation report. The final step in the process was the decision that CU’s internal system was compliant with the Internal System Standards.
"Developing and introducing an internal higher education quality assurance system was an extremely demanding process that took us several years. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to bringing this process to a successful conclusion. After obtaining the accreditation, we will have more freedom to change our existing study programmes and propose new ones, which is a big step forward compared to the current system which requires the approval of all such requests by an accreditation commission. I believe that this decision will also be an important step towards making the study at Comenius University more attractive," said the Rector Marek Števček.
The Slovak Accreditation Agency for Higher Education expects that CU will continuously strive to improve the quality of its higher education. The agency will continue to oversee the compliance with the standards.

Major Success for Jessenius Medical Students at Rallye Rejvíz 2024

Students from the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine at Comenius University in Martin achieved an...

Rallye Rejvíz is a renowned international methodological competition for emergency medical service crews, attracting teams from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Cyprus, the Netherlands, Poland, Greece, Austria, Slovenia, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. This year's event took place in Kouty nad Desnou, Czech Republic, with challenges staged in realistic settings such as houses, farms, fire stations, and schools.
"I must highlight the strong tradition of this competition. The organizing team of around 300 people prepared tasks that were sometimes frighteningly realistic," said Martin Nedelka, a member of the bronze-winning team. The team from Jessenius Faculty comprised fifth-year students Tereza Ščurová, Martin Nedelka, and Matej Lepey. Competing in the MUC RR category, they faced eight teams from the Czech Republic and Slovakia, including those from Brno, Hradec Králové, Ostrava, and Bratislava.
The competition consisted of ten tasks divided into day and night stages over two days. "The tasks were designed as emergency medical service responses and were spread throughout the village and its surroundings. We drove to each location in our own car. Realism was added by a phone app through which we received alerts from the control center (e.g., 'Young man, unconscious, not breathing...'), along with the address, response time, and task completion time. We had to accept the alert in the app, record our departure, arrival, and task completion," explained Nedelka.
On-site, judges assessed the students' responses to the latest medical standards, including ALS procedures, PHTLS, and the use of POCUS ultrasound. They also had to communicate with other emergency response teams (police, firefighters), witnesses, the control center, toxicology centers, and social workers. "The tasks dynamically changed based on our actions. Every step we took influenced the next and the final outcome. We had to correctly diagnose life-threatening conditions, treat them appropriately, monitor the patients, and choose the right transport method to the appropriate facility," Nedelka added.
Before the competition, students attended workshops focused on basic emergency medicine procedures (UHPO, ABCDE) and familiarized themselves with the tools used during the tasks (monitors, splints, collars, IV and IO access, airway management). "After the competition, we reviewed the tasks with the judges to clarify the correct procedures and discuss any uncertainties. In the latter part of the event, we participated as judges, role-players, and part of the organizational team for the professional crews," added Nedelka.
The students prepared for about a month and a half, completing six training sessions and over 24 hours of simulations under the guidance of Dr. Tomáš Fecko. They described the competition as a unique opportunity to practice comprehensive pre-hospital patient management and meet many interesting people. "This competition gave us confidence in our clinical knowledge and skills, as well as in our teamwork. The confidence comes from being able to practice the full range of procedures we learned during our intense preparation. We met great people from other faculties with whom we will stay in contact," concluded Martin Nedelka.
Finally, the students expressed gratitude to the faculty for the opportunity to participate and represent them at this prestigious competition. "We believe we have enhanced the faculty's reputation in emergency medicine on an international level. Special thanks to Dr. Tomáš Fecko, who led our simulations in his free time, provided us with essential literature, and never said no. Thanks also to Dr. Denisa Osinová, who shared her know-how on principles that helped us navigate challenging situations, and to Dr. Jakub Hamšík for supplying our equipment and offering invaluable mentorship. Thanks as well to Dr. Slavomír Nosáľ and the team at the Pediatric Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Clinic for introducing us to PALS protocols," added Nedelka.

The University Hospital Martin and the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine at Comenius University in...

Held in the grand Aula Magna at the Jessenius Faculty, the event attracted nearly 400 students from Jozef Lettrich Gymnasium, Viliam Paulíny-Tóth Gymnasium in Martin, and the Evangelical United School in Martin. The program featured lectures, surveys, quizzes, and interviews with distinguished guests, all designed to educate students about a healthy lifestyle, body functions, nutritional disorders, and their treatments through modern medicine.
Speakers included professionals from the university hospital and the medical faculty, sharing personal stories and insights into healthy living. Prof. Ivana Dedinská, a nephrologist, discussed the importance of hydration and fluids; internist Dr. Juraj Krivuš talked about essential nutrients and their significance for the human body. Gastroenterologist Dr. Martin Schnierer highlighted the health risks associated with certain diets and the growing popularity of nutritional supplements.
A poignant moment came when 14-year-old Andrea spoke about her struggle with mental anorexia, earning a round of applause for her bravery. Peer consultants, who have personal experiences with mental health issues, shared how they now help others manage their conditions. Additionally, surgical treatments for obesity were presented by Dr. Marek Smolár, who also shared insights from a patient who underwent bariatric surgery.
The program also touched on the nutrition of fetuses and newborns, with neonatologist Prof. Dr. Mirko Zibolen sharing challenges faced by extremely premature babies like Bianca, who overcame significant health complications. The event concluded with Dr. Denisa Osinová discussing the "Blue Zones" — regions where people live exceptionally long lives, which she studied during a six-month stint in the U.S.
The main message conveyed to the students was to value and care for their health through proper lifestyle choices, emphasizing that good health is a precious asset that deserves attention and care. This initiative by the medical faculty and hospital not only provided educational insights but also inspired students to adopt healthier lifestyles.

Algebraic Graph Theory Seminar - Clement Legrand (24.5.2024)

Friday 24.5.2024 at 13:00, Lecture room M/IX (online too)

Clement Legrand (University of Bordeaux):
The structure of quasi-transitive graphs avoiding a minor
Abstract:
An infinite graph is quasi-transitive if its vertex set has finitely many orbits under the action of its automorphism group. With Louis Esperet and Ugo Giocanti, we obtain a structure theorem for locally finite quasi-transitive graphs avoiding a minor, which is reminiscent of the Robertson-Seymour Graph Minor Structure Theorem. As applications of this result, we prove that every locally finite quasi-transitive graph attains its Hadwiger number, that is, if such a graph contains arbitrarily large clique minors, then it contains an infinite clique minor. This answers a question of Thomassen from 1992. We also derive some results on the accessibility of quasi-transitive graphs and groups avoiding a minor.
Finally, we prove the minor-excluded case of a conjecture of Ballier and Stein (2018) on the domino problem.
