Monday Onoja:
Leveraging Ontology-Based Knowledge Representation For Explainable Malware Detection
Abstract:

Malware, short for malicious code is continuously posing increasing number of threats in today’s interconnected world. In order to sufficiently represent malware behaviour for effective malware detection and to derive interpretation for decisions of machine learning models, malware Researchers and Cyber Security experts are now delving into the application of Ontology based technique in Malware domain. While leveraging ontology also holds the potential of enhancing explainability, most efforts in literature are focused on static malware ontology, covering limited features in expressing the actual malware intent, or do not adhere to any standard language for characterizing malware attributes. In this work, we propose a more comprehensive and integrated malware ontology, covering both static and dynamic (hybrid) malware attributes which will capture more actions, artifacts and threat patterns sufficient for effective malware detection. Additionally we propose a vocabulary formalization that is based on established standard languages for malware attribute representation, specifically combining the Maec, Stix and Mitre standards.

Seminar of Graph Theory - Jozef Rajník (27.2.2025)

Thursday 27.2.2025 at 9:50, Lecture room M 213

Jozef Rajník:
On lower bounds on d-dimensional flow numbers

Abstract:
A d-dimensional nowhere-zero r-flow on a graph G, an (r,d)-NZF for short, is a flow where the value on each edge is an element of R^d whose (Euclidean) norm lies in the interval [1,r-1]. The d-dimensional flow number of a bridgeless graph is the minimal r for which G has an (r,d)-NZF. We have introduced this notion generalising integer, circular and unit vector flows. It turns out that obtaining lower bounds of d-dimensional flow numbers is a difficult task, even for specific small graphs such as the Petersen graph. Thus, in this talk, we present two non-trivial lower bounds we have obtained – for the wheel graphs and the Isaacs flower snarks. The former implies a lower bound for any cubic graph depending on its odd-girth.
This is a joint work with Davide Mattiolo, Giuseppe Mazzuoccolo and Gloria Tabarelli. The author of this talk is supported by grants VEGA 1/0727/22 and APVV-23-0076.

NATO SECRETARY GENERAL ADDRESSED THE CU AUDITORIUM

Bratislava, 21 February, 2025: Yesterday, the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty...

Mark Rutte was welcomed to Comenius University by Rector Marek Števček. In his opening remarks, Vice-Rector for External Relations Radomír Masaryk took a journey to Slovakia's past, when its citizens lived behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War and schoolchildren were taken on excursions to the strictly guarded border. He mentioned the security conference that took place recently in Munich, a city that has a lot of symbolism in our history. "We are lucky today to have a special guest in our Grand Auditorium who was as much of an insider to these talks as one could be. We are all really eager to hear his remarks about the future of the world, the future of NATO, and the future of Europe. And maybe we will get some hope that those elementary schools field trips to the iron curtain will remain a thing of the past," said Vice-Rector Masaryk at the beginning.
Mark Rutte then gave an address titled ‘Building stronger defences: The path to securing our future’. In its opening, he mentioned John Amos Comenius, who lived in exile in Mr Rutte’s native Netherlands for many years, and is still remembered there today. „Comenius believed in universal education and that education for all could promote peace and unity among people and nations. Eventually, he himself was forced from Moravia into exile because of conflict, the brutal Thirty Years' War."
Mr Rutte emphasised that NATO's main goal was to prevent wars and to attempt to halt fighting where it was already taking place. "Preventing war is what we work for every day in NATO. While NATO has got us through the Cold War, we have a hot war raging just next door. We all want the fighting in Ukraine to stop as soon as possible, and that we have a lasting peace, a durable peace."
According to him, the current path to ensuring peace and security in Europe is to increase defence spending by NATO member states and invest in defence industry capacities. He called for a significant increase in NATO defence spending, beyond three percent of GDP. "In a more volatile and dangerous world, we must invest more in our own security. We must do so to prevent conflict and protect our way of life. We need to substantially increase spending on our collective defence. We all need to do this to deter anyone from even thinking about attacking us. To make sure no-one ever attempts to occupy a single square kilometre of Ukraine or any NATO member," Mr Rutte emphasized.
After his address, students were given the opportunity to ask questions. They inquired about the current political and security situation in the world and in Europe, NATO's position on its eastward expansion, the situation in the southern wing of the Alliance in relation to Syria and the Middle East, but also about NATO's position on countries that do not share its position on increasing defence spending. He emphasised that Slovakia was among the countries that meet their obligations arising from their membership in the Alliance. "Slovakia is one of the most integrated countries, like the Netherlands. You're a member of the EU, Schengen, the Eurozone, NATO. You are actively participating in all those formats and structures, and that is highly respected".
International students at CU were also among the participants. Mark Rutte, who was the Prime Minister of the Netherlands for 14 years, was greeted in his native language by a Dutch student who is on an exchange stay from the University of Utrecht.
Several students from Ukraine were interested in NATO's stance on the war in their home country. "I wish for this war to end as soon as possible. I hope for your country to be integrated in Euro-Atlantic structures like the EU and NATO and I hope that you will rebuild your country," was the message that the NATO Secretary General gave them.
At the end of the discussion, Mark Rutte told the assembly of young people to act without fear and to take risks from time to time. "I've always lived my life by the assumption that it is easier to ask for forgiveness afterwards than for permission up front. So, take some risks! And when you have strong ideas, follow them. Even if you have many seniors telling you that you can't, because potentially you might be right and if not, at least you learn something."
Rector Marek Števček also commented on Mark Rutte's visit at Comenius University: "I am very pleased that a representative of such an important institution chose our university to meet with young people. I was also pleased that our students, including those from abroad, showed such great interest in this meeting and actively joined the discussion. This means that young people are interested in the world they live in and are not indifferent to their future. We may have different views on the geopolitical situation, but the opportunity to listen to the highest NATO official and ask him direct questions is important in forming one's own opinions." The discussion was open to the entire academic community of Comenius University, but due to enormous interest, the auditorium was filled to capacity just a few dozen minutes after registration started.
At the end of the visit, the NATO Secretary General signed CU's commemorative book and took a photo with the audience.

Wednesday 26.2.2025 at 14:00, Lecture room F1/364

M.Sc., Dr. Vipul Vilas Kusumkar, PhD. (Department of Nuclear Chemistry, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Comenius University in Bratislava):
MXene-Based Adsorbents for the Efficient Removal of Radionuclides from Aqueous Solutions: A Comprehensive Study on Ba-133 and Cs-137 Sorption
Abstract:
The release of radionuclides such as Ba-133 and Cs-137 into the environment poses significant health and environmental risks due to their long half-lives and harmful radiation emissions. This study investigates the potential of MXene-based materials as highly efficient adsorbents for the removal of these radionuclides from aqueous solutions. MXenes, a class of two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides, were synthesized and characterized, demonstrating exceptional adsorption capacities of 154.9 mg/g for Ba-133 and 121.5 mg/g for Cs-137. Further enhancement was achieved by decorating MXene with Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles, resulting in a composite (MXF-30) with significantly improved adsorption capacities of 575.586 mg/g for Ba-133 and 842.586 mg/g for Cs-137. The adsorption mechanisms were explored through detailed material characterization, including BET surface area analysis, and the influence of pH, contact time, and competing ions on sorption efficiency was systematically evaluated. The results indicate that MXene-Fe₃O₄ composites exhibit superior selectivity, stability, and efficiency under varied environmental conditions, making them promising candidates for large-scale radioactive wastewater treatment. This study also highlights the potential of MXene-based materials as cost-effective and tunable sorbents, offering a sustainable solution for mitigating radioactive contamination in water systems.

Doctoral colloquium - Jafari Fatana (24.2.2025)

Monday 24.2.2025 at 13:10 hod., Lecture room I/9

Jafari Fatana:
Automatic Classification and Diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis Lesions(White Matter) From Brain MR Images Based on Deep Learningand Explainable AI Methods
Abstract:
This research investigates the detection of white matter lesions in multiple sclerosis (MS) using brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MS is a chronic autoimmunedisease affecting the central nervous system, leading to symptoms such as muscleweakness, dizziness, fatigue, and vision loss. Early diagnosis is crucial for timelytreatment and disease progression prevention. While AI-based systems have shownsuccess in identifying MS lesions, their integration into clinical practice is limitedbya lack of transparency and explainability, undermining clinician trust. Explainableartificial intelligence (XAI) addresses this issue by providing interpretablejustifications for model predictions, resolving the "black-box" probleminherent inmany AI systems.
The primary goal of this research is to develop novel, fully automated methods for detecting white matter lesions in MS by integrating post hoc explanation techniques into deep learning models, including local interpretable model-agnostic explanations (LIME) and Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM), to enhancethe interpretability of AI predictions. Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) were trained on a dataset of 514 brain MRI scans (345 positive and 169 negative) inDICOM format, obtained from the radiology department of Cyril and Methodius Hospital in Bratislava.
Prior to training, several pre-processing techniques were applied to improve imagequality. Firstly, we converts a series of DICOM images into a single NIfTI file whichsimplifying processing and compatibility with neuroimaging tools. this canbeachieved using the SimpleITK library to read the DICOM series and save it as a 3DNIfTI file. Secondly, we applied Skull Stripping technique using (FSL's BET) whichis FMRIB Software Library with the Brain Extraction Tool for removing non-braintissues, such as the skull and scalp, from brain imaging data to focus analyses on brainstructures. Additionally, implemented Bias Field Correction (N4ITK) methodtocorrects MRI intensity non-uniformities caused by field inhomogeneities, enhancingimage quality; and so on.

Highest-energy neutrino detected to date

Discovery of an ultra-high-energy cosmic neutrino with KM3NeT neutrino telescope. Scientific team...

On Wednesday, February 12, 2025, by means of a publication in Nature journal, scientists operating and developing KM3NeT neutrino telescope in Mediterranean Sea announced observation of the most energetic cosmic neutrino with energy of 220 PeV (1 PeV = 1015 eV), surpassing the previous record of the IceCube neutrino telescope at the South Pole, which detected a neutrino with an energy of 6 PeV. (youtube:
). This event, practically near-horizontal muon traversing three-dimensional network of optical modules (photosensors) of the telescope, was registered on February 13, 2023 by the ARCA detector that is located offshore Sicily at a depth of about 3450 m. At that time, the detector which aims on recording the Cherenkov radiation consisted of 21 operational detection units. Each detection unit houses 18 optical modules approximately equally spaced on strings that are about 700 m long. Based on high energy of this muon (approximately 120 PeV) and its trajectory, team concluded that the particle cannot be produced by collisions of cosmic rays in Earth’s atmosphere, but it is produced by a cosmic neutrino. This is indeed groundbreaking discovery in the field of astronomy, astrophysics and human knowledge. (
). Scientific team from FMFI UK in Bratislava – prof. Fedor Šimkovic, Dr. Rastislav Dvornický, Eliška Eckerová, and Zuzana Bardačová (PhD students) - is part of KM3NeT collaboration.
Neutrino telescopes observe instead of light high energy neutrinos that are messengers from deep Universe. These particles can travel vast distances in space without distortion of their direction. Registration of galactic and extra-galactic neutrinos can reveal the origin of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays, gamma ray bursts, shed light on objects like active galactic nuclei and unique processes in Universe – supernova explosions, collisions of stars, galaxies, black holes, etc. The aims of neutrino astrophysics are being gradually fulfilled with operation of neutrino telescopes like Baikal-GVD (0.6 km3 volume), IceCube (1 km3 volume), KM3NeT (0.2 km3 volume), and P-ONE. These experiments present the first map of high-energy neutrino sources which is unique and address the need of further research in the field of neutrino astronomy. The detection volumes of these telescopes are still growing. There are Chinese projects HUNT and TRIDENT in preparation with planned volume of about 20km3.
