LAITECH2025 conference with active participation of the representative of the Faculty of Law, CU

27- 28 February 2025, Tallinn, Estonia

A PhD student of the Faculty of Law of Comenius University in Bratislava, JUDr. Michal Rampášek, gave a presentation on "Vulnerability Disclosure Processes for AI Systems" at the
, which took place on 27-28 February 2025 in Tallinn, Estonia.
He focused on the specifics of cybersecurity of artificial intelligence (AI) systems, which go beyond traditional security measures and include issues of trustworthiness, data quality and robustness of models. AI systems are exposed to specific threats such as adversarial attacks and poisoning attacks that require effective vulnerability disclosure processes.
The submitted paper analyzed whether current European regulations, in particular the NIS2 Directive, the Cyber Resilience Act and the Artificial Intelligence Act, provide sufficient protection for researchers and practitioners in detecting and reporting AI vulnerabilities, and whether they impose binding obligations on organisations to address them.

Seminar of Department of Theoretical Physics - Josef Pradler (25.3.2025)

Tuesday 25.3.2025 at 14:00, Lecture room F2/125

Dr. Josef Pradler (Austrian Academy of Sciences, Institute of High Energy Physics):
Light Dark Matter: showcases from cosmology, astrophysics, and experiment
Abstract:
Astronomical and cosmological observations reveal a persistent discrepancy between the apparent distribution of mass and predictions based on gravity, pointing to the presence of dark matter. In this talk, I will review dark sector candidates in the MeV to GeV mass range. These candidates have driven theoretical innovation and experimental progress while offering astrophysical and cosmological implications that complement those of electroweak-scale dark matter and ultralight candidates such as axions. I will present the general picture, discuss recent developments and outstanding challenges-from theoretical constraints to experimental detection strategies-and highlight ongoing efforts aimed at further illuminating the dark sector.
Abstract:
Reinforcement learning can solve decision-making problems by training an agent to behave in an environment according to a predesigned reward function. This is, however, very difficult if the reward is too sparse, so the solution may be to equip the agent with an intrinsic motivation (IM) that will provide informed exploration during learning. Novelty detection is one of the promising branches in this domain. We present Self-supervised Network Distillation (SND), a class of IM algorithms based on the distillation error as a novelty indicator, where the predictor model and the target model are both trained. We adapted three existing self-supervised methods and experimentally tested them on a set of ten environments that are considered difficult to explore. The results show that our approach is more effective compared to the baseline models. We also applied the analytical methods that help explain the virtues of our models. The presentation refers to our recent work

Seminar of Graph Theory - Edita Mačajová (13.3.2025)

Thursday 13.3.2025 at 9:50, Lecture room M 213

Edita Mačajová:
An 8-flow theorem for signed graphs
Abstract:
We show that a signed graph admits a nowhere-zero 8-flow provided that it is flow-admissible and the underlying graph admits a nowhere-zero 4-flow. When combined with the 4-colour theorem, this implies that every flow-admissible bridgeless planar signed graph admits a nowhere-zero 8-flow. Our result improves and generalizes previous results of Li et al. (European J. Combin. 108 (2023), 103627), which state that every flow-admissible signed 3-edge-colorable cubic graph admits a nowhere-zero 10-flow, and that every flow-admissible signed hamiltonian graph admits a nowhere-zero 8-flow.
This is a joint work with Rong Luo, Martin Skoviera, and Cun-Quan Zhang. The speaker is supported by VEGA 1/0727/22 and APVV-23-0076.

MOST OF EXCELLENT RESEARCH IN SLOVAKIA IS PRODUCED AT COMENIUS UNIVERSITY

Bratislava, 10 March, 2025 – Comenius University Bratislava (CU) produces the highest-quality...

The ministry assessed excellent output in four international databases:

Publications in the Nature Index – the world's most prestigious scientific journals

Highly cited publications in the Web of Science (WoS) database – publications ranking in the top 1% most cited in their field worldwide

European and American patents – registered with the European Patent Office or the United States Patent and Trademark Office

European Research Council (ERC) grants

In terms of publications in the Nature Index (for the period from 1 November, 2023, to 31 October, 2024), 76.22% of research outputs from Slovak universities came from CU faculty members. Among highly cited outputs in the Web of Science databases (until 31 January, 2025), CU researchers accounted for 36.64%. In the patents category for the same period, CU held a 54.17% share. In the fourth category (ERC grants), there were no outputs from Slovakia during the evaluated period.
"I am proud that we have achieved such exceptional results in this evaluation. It is the outcome of systematic support for science at Comenius University, particularly through funding for excellent research teams, CU grants for full-time doctoral students, and the introduction of postdoctoral fellowships. This confirms that emphasizing quality and international research collaboration leads to global recognition and visibility. We do not want to be just Slovakia’s oldest, largest, and best university – our ambition is to be among the universities that contribute excellent research on a global scale," said Jozef Masarik, Vice-Rector for Science and Doctoral Studies.
The fields in which Comenius University achieved excellent research results include physical sciences, chemistry, biological sciences, mathematics, medical sciences, psychology, and Earth and environmental sciences.
"In the scientific community, we prioritise cooperation, and we see even competing institutions more as partners. Nevertheless, I am proud that, out of the 20 public universities in Slovakia, researchers at Comenius University generated the majority of all research output in our country. In the Nature Index category, our university contributed an impressive 76.22% of the total publications. I sincerely thank our research teams for their immense dedication and outstanding achievements, often under challenging conditions while simultaneously fulfilling their teaching responsibilities. I hope that this new form of subsidy will serve as both motivation for continued top-level research and inspiration for others," emphasised CU Rector Marek Števček.
Starting in 2025, Ministry of Education has introduced a new financial instrument to support excellent scientific research at Slovak universities. This is an immediate, automatic, and ongoing reward system for outstanding scientific achievements and innovations. Three times a year (31 January, 31 May, and 30 September), the ministry collects data from international databases and automatically allocates funds to universities based on their results.
According to the ministry's methodology, universities are required to allocate half of the subsidy directly to the authors of excellent outputs and innovations, while the other half can be used to develop the excellent research institutions where these outputs were produced.

Nuclear Seminar - Branislav Sitár (12.3.2025)

Wednesday 12.3.2025 at 14:00, Lecture rook F1/364

prof. RNDr. Branislav Sitár, DrSc.:
30 nuclear physics discoveries on the FRS at GSI Darmstadt with a substantial contribution of the FMFI UK Bratislava group

Abstract:
On the Fragment separator FRS at GSI Darmstadt the FMFI UK Bratislava group since 1995 developed and gradually exchanged German detectors MWPC by the TPC detectors. TPC detectors ensured considerably higher precision and other characteristics, which improved the quality of the FRS spectrometer. The FMFI UK group provided a complex tracking of nuclei at the FRS. New tracking detectors enabled international teams in 1995-2020 years to discover tens of new exotic nuclei with neutron or proton halos. Experimental discoveries brought creating of new theoretical models including corrections of nuclear magic numbers near neutron and proton drip lines. The discoveries allowed better understanding of quantum features of the nuclear force and physical processes connected with nuclear gluon bonds. FMFI UK group is since 2010 a member of NUSTAR and Super FRS collaborations in the European laboratory FAIR at Darmstadt. The group developed for Super FRS a new, more powerful detector - Twin TPC.
