Seminar of Department of Theoretical Physics - Andrej Gendiar (8.4.2025)

Tuesday 8.4.2025 at 14:00, Lecture room F2/125

Mgr. Andrej Gendiar, PhD. (Institute of Physics SAS, Research Center for Quantum Information):
Entanglement in Tensor Networks

Abstract:
Tensor Networks are special classes of variational quantum states typically applied to study strongly correlated many-body systems. They were developed to calculate ground and excited states of higher-dimensional systems originating in the one-dimensional matrix product states (equivalent to the density matrix renormalization group). We aim to explain their mathematical background rooted in maximizing quantum entanglement. We show the main principles in the simplest examples. Due to a so-called quantum-classical correspondence (imaginary time evolution), we analyze two identical representations of the Tensor Networks: 1) the vertex representation (commonly used in the quantum states) and 2) the weight representation (well-known from classical statistical mechanics). We explain two-dimensional classical spin models exhibiting equivalent partition functions. Although the equivalency of all observables and correlations for both representations, entanglement entropy is always lower for the vertex representation of the Tensor Networks for finite and infinite systems, irrespective of the spin-lattice model, the number of spin degrees of freedom, and the underlying lattice geometry. We consider various types of tensor networks to investigate why the discrepancy persists within all phase-transition types generated in a wide range of spin Hamiltonians.

Seminar of Graph Theory - Matúš Matok (3.4.2025)

Thursday 3.4.2025 at 9:50, Lecture room M 213

Matúš Matok:
(Mostly) total colouring of (sub)cubic Halin graphs
Abstract:
A Halin graph is a planar graph consisting of a tree and an additional cycle connecting all the leaves in such manner that no two edges are crossing. We will be interested in (sub)cubic Halin graphs. Total colouring of a graph is a mapping from the set of vertices and edges to a set of colours such that no two neighbouring objects receive the same colour. We will be (mostly) talking about total colouring, but we will also briefly mention two very related colourings, namely AVD-colouring and SND-colouring. As there were only 3 known cubic Halin graphs with total chromatic index greater than 4, a natural open question was informally posed by Borut Lužar on whether the number of such graphs is finite. We managed to prove that the set of cubic Halin graphs with total chromatic index greater than 4 is finite, containing only the cubic Halin graphs known before-hand. By a slight modification of our approach, we managed to establish similar results for total and AVD-colouring of subcubic Halin graphs. Lastly, we observed that the set of subcubic Halin graphs with SND-chromatic index greater than 4 is infinite and its precise characterisation is currently a work in progress.

Doctoral colloquium - Marek Šuppa (31.3.2025)

Monday 31.3.2025 at 13:10, Lecture room I/9

Marek Šuppa:
One Year Later: Did LLMs Solve Multilingual NLP or (Simply) Redefine the Problem?

Abstract:
The continued proliferation and advancement of Large Language Models (LLMs) over the past year, marked by releases like Claude 3.7 Sonnet, Gemini 2.5 Pro, GPT-4o, Grok 3 and Llama 3, have further solidified their transformative impact on Natural Language Processing. Tasks once considered challenging are frequently handled with remarkable proficiency. Concurrently, a significant focus has emerged on enhancing reasoning capabilities, exemplified by models such as OpenAI's o3 series and DeepSeek-R1. Despite these strides, the initial observation persists: impressive performance, often benchmarked in English, raises questions about equitable capabilities across the linguistic spectrum, particularly for less-resourced languages.
This presentation revisits the state-of-the-art, specifically asking whether LLMs have truly 'solved' multilingual NLP or if their primary effect has been to redefine the challenges. We will examine the tangible progress observed for languages like Slovak, where new models and dedicated resources have yielded notable improvements, suggesting a brighter outlook, potentially including Slovak-specific models. Our recent findings evaluating these newer LLMs on (not only) Slovak tasks will be presented, illustrating both advancements and persistent gaps. Ultimately, we argue that while LLM capabilities are undeniable, the multilingual NLP problem is far from solved; rather, it has been reshaped, demanding new evaluation paradigms, focus on lower-resource languages, and nuanced approaches beyond simple capability scaling.

Foreign Students Learn to Cook Bryndzové Halušky from Professionals

As part of integration activities for Comenius University students, the Department of International...

The course, conducted in English, took place in a professional cooking school. Foreign students from Ukraine, Lithuania, France, Russia, Syria, Cuba, Zimbabwe, India, and Colombia participated, along with several domestic students. Various faculties were represented, with the largest number of participants coming from the Faculty of Management and the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences at Comenius University.
Divided into four stations, the students, under the guidance of two professional chefs, went through the entire process of preparing halušky—from peeling and grating potatoes to making the dough, shaping the dumplings by hand, and finally cooking and serving them. As a bonus, they also learned to prepare a simple dessert: lava cakes. The workshop concluded with participants enjoying the meals they had prepared.
"Foreigners sometimes approach our national dish with caution, but all the participants really enjoyed their own creations. We are delighted to have contributed not only to raising awareness of our cultural and culinary traditions but also to helping students form new international friendships," said Ivana Dzúriková, a member of the organizing team.
The Department of International Relations is planning more engaging integration activities for both foreign and Slovak students. Currently, students can attend holistic yoga classes every Thursday, led by Amit, a doctoral student at the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences and a certified yoga instructor.

Nuclear Seminar - RNDr. Marek Hupian (2.4.2025)

Wednesday 2.4.2025 at 14:00, Lecture room F1/364

RNDr. Marek Hupian (Department of Nuclear Chemistry Faculty of Natural Sciences CU):
Validation of spectrophotometric method for Ni-63 activity determination in radioactive waste
Abstract:
Radiochemical analysis plays a crucial role in environmental monitoring, nuclear facility decommissioning, and radioactive waste processing. Ni-63 is an activation product with a relatively long half-life and is classified as a difficult-to-measure radionuclide. Traditional separation methods for activity determination of such radionuclides are often time-consuming and resource-intensive. The presented results demonstrate the validation of a spectrophotometric method that replaces conventional gravimetric yield determination, significantly reducing the total analysis time and chemical consumption. By combining ion-exchange and extraction chromatography with cuvette-based spectrophotometric yield measurement and liquid scintillation counting, the accurate activity of Ni-63 was determined in both a certified reference material and radioactive waste. The method was validated using NPL-certified material and subsequently applied to a real sample of radioactive waste leachate. Compared to gravimetry, the method resulted in approximately 80% time savings while maintaining comparable accuracy.
