Seminar of Graph Theory - Gejza Jenča (24.4.2025)

Thursday 24.4.2025 at 9:50, Lecture room M 213

Gejza Jenča (Slovak University of Technology, Bratislava:
Voltage Lifts of Graphs from a Category Theory Viewpoint
Abstract:
A voltage graph is a graph (symmetric multidigraph) in which every dart is labeled with an element of a group in a way that respects the involutive symmetry. A group labelled graph is a graph in which every vertex is labelled by a element of a group.
In 1974, Gross introduced a construction of a derived graph of a voltage graph. Nowadays, this construction is called voltage graph lift.
In the talk, we give a category theoretical background of this construction by showing that the voltage graph lift is a functor that is right adjoint to a (very naturally defined) functor from the category of group labelled graphs to the category of voltage graphs.
We then show that it is possible to describe the lift construction as a pullback in the category of graphs. This allows us to consider a wider category of voltage graphs, for which the underlying group in not fixed.

Tuesday 29.4.2025 at 14:00, Lecture room F2/125

Samuel Kováčik:
The Fuzzy Onion
Abstract:
Recently, a matrix formulation of a three-dimensional quantum space was proposed. The basic idea is that an (in)finite number of fuzzy spheres can be glued together in a specific way. During the seminar, we will discuss the construction of the model with some recent examples from field theory, quantum mechanics and classical physics.

Supporting Young Researchers: Comenius University Allocates a Record Sum Through its CU Grants Scheme

Bratislava, 16 April 2024 – For the twenty-ninth time, Comenius University Bratislava (CU) has...

Each project will receive funding from the CU Development Fund, with funds available for use until 15 December 2025. To promote the work of young researchers, the grant amount for Group A projects was increased by as much as 25%.
As in previous years, the Faculty of Natural Sciences came first in both the number of submitted and supported projects. It submitted 96 grant applications, 49 of which were approved, receiving a total of €59,850. The Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics received funding for 38 projects out of 74 submissions, with total funding of €45,800. The Faculty of Medicine came third, having submitted 60 projects, of which 31 were approved for a total of €38,750.
One of CU Grants recipients this year is Filip Janák from the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics, whose project explores the structure of the Milky Way's disc, focusing specifically on the galactic warp and flare. According to the project, better understanding of these structures has great potential to improve our knowledge of galactic and cosmic evolution, refine cosmological models, and provide new evidence relating to the long-standing issue of "missing" mass in the universe.
Dušan Gold from the Faculty of Natural Sciences received a grant for his project on the use of mobile network location data in spatial analysis. His work focuses on defining and analysing the phenomenon of weekend locations in Slovakia, comparing population behaviour during the working week and at weekends.
Another recipient, Daša Švecová from the Faculty of Education, is studying the emotional responses of pupils with autism spectrum disorders during physical education and sport classes. Her research will offer practical recommendations for teachers, specialists, and parents, helping to increase participation of these pupils in physical education and foster a more inclusive learning environment.
In the field of the humanities, Fátima del Rosario Tec Pool from the Faculty of Arts received a grant for a project documenting the motifs of rock art in the Kaua cave in Yucatán, Mexico, using LiDAR technology. The project will result in a catalogue of the paintings, including a typology of the motifs and a proposed timeline of their development.
“It has been nearly thirty years since the leadership of Comenius University began supporting the creative scientific work of the young staff of our alma mater through its own grant scheme. This initiative allows them to gain experience in submitting research projects, carrying them out, and managing them. We see this type of grant competition as the most effective way to develop the essential skills of early-career researchers, which is why we intend to continue supporting and promoting it as much as possible,” said CU Rector Marek Števček.
CU Grants support scientific, educational, and artistic projects led by internal doctoral students. They serve to partially or fully cover the financial costs of research projects. The Rector of Comenius University awards the grants for one calendar year based on the recommendations of the CU Grant Committee, appointed by the Rector. The scheme is managed by the Office for Research and Doctoral Studies of the Rectorate.

Nuclear Seminar - prof. Jozef Masarik (23.4.2025)

Wednesday 23.4.2025 at 14:00, Lecture room F1/364

prof. RNDr. Jozef Masarik, DrSc.:
Cosmogenic nuclides and some of their applications

Abstract:
Seminar will be devoted to the simulation of cosmogenic nuclide production. Some specific applications will be given. Production rates for the cosmogenic radionuclides 10Be, 14C, 26Al, 36Cl, 41Ca, 53Mn, and 60Fe in a large variety of meteorites, i.e., ordinary chondrites (H, L, LL), carbonaceous chondrites, HED meteorites, ureilites, Martian meteorites, iron meteorites, and in the uppermost 2 m of the lunar surface are modeled. The new model, which covers a wide range of pre-atmospheric radii and shielding conditions, is the first version to fully implement primary and secondary α-particles. Model was applied also to samples from surface of Benu asteroid. The OSIRIS-REx mission deployed contact pad samplers to collect 28 regolith from the uppermost surface of Bennu that was exposed to the space environment. Cosmogenic noble gases and radionuclides suggest that the upper meter of Bennu’s regolith has been exposed to cosmic rays for 2–7 million years, consistent with remote sensing observations indicating that the asteroid’s surface is dynamic and regularly modified by mass movement.

Seminar on Qualitative Theory of Differential Equations - Radoslav Hurtiš (24.4.2025)

Thursday 24.4.2025 at 14:00, Lecture room M 223

Radoslav Hurtiš:
Micro-continuum modelling of chemical erosion in porous media

Abstract:
The exposure of soluble rocks, such as salt, gypsum, or limestone, to fluid flow often triggers chemical interactions between the fluid and the solid minerals. These interactions degrade the mechanical properties of the rock, leading to the formation of distinct geomorphological patterns, including rillenkarren, tsingys, and scallops. This study focuses on the formation of scallops, i.e., cup-shaped depressions with sharp crests that develop on dissolving rock surfaces. We employ a micro-continuum modelling technique, coupled with a volume-of-solid approach for mineral dissolution, to investigate the two-dimensional pattern formation for the characteristic properties of salt. The numerical simulations reproduce the formation of sharp shapes observed in both natural settings and laboratory experiments, corresponding to the emergence of tip singularities in the evolution of the interface. We also present three-dimensional simulations that capture the early stages of surface pattern development, providing insights into the dynamics of dissolution-driven morphogenesis.
This is a joint work with G. Richard and C. Soulaine.

Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure Code in the context of public procurement

14 April, 2025, Public Procurement Office (UVO)

Employees of the Public Procurement Office participated in a training session on criminal law, with a focus on the Office’s competencies. The training was led by Professor JUDr. Jozef Čentéš, DrSc., Head of the Department of Criminal Law, Criminology, and Criminalistics at the Faculty of Law, Comenius University.
The training was initiated by the President of the Office, JUDr. Peter Kubovič, with the aim of deepening expert knowledge at the highest professional level in terms of specific provisions of the Criminal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure that are relevant to the Office’s activities—particularly in the context of supporting law enforcement authorities.
In practise, the Office has received complaints from investigators related to older public procurement procedures. However, due to the expiration of statutory deadlines for imposing sanctions or the end of mandatory documentation retention periods, these cases often prove ineffective from a supervisory standpoint. In addition, they place an undue administrative burden on the public institutions involved.
The Office recognizes the need for more effective cooperation with law enforcement authorities and plans to establish clear rules and mechanisms for collaboration, based on insights gained from this training.
At the same time, the Public Procurement Office considers it appropriate to re-examine the legal definition of the criminal offence of public procurement manipulation. This area would benefit from legislative reform to better reflect practical application and to meet the needs of effective competition protection, which plays a central role in the public procurement process.
The President of the Office expressed his sincere thanks to Professor JUDr. Jozef Čentéš, DrSc., for his insightful and scholarly lecture. Professor Čentéš provided a clear presentation of the key legal concepts in criminal law and offered valuable perspectives on their application in the decision-making practices of criminal courts.
