Hackathon with ÚVO: Students Experienced Public Procurement in Practice

29 April 2025, Comenius University, Faculty of Law

Employees of the Public Procurement Office (ÚVO) are actively involved in teaching undergraduate students at the Faculty of Law of Comenius University, particularly in the subject of Economic Law, which focuses on public procurement.
On 25 April, the Public Procurement Office organised a Student Hackathon, giving students the opportunity to face real-life challenges. Divided into three teams, they worked on two types of assignments:

setting the conditions of a procurement procedure from the perspective of contracting authority,

identifying errors in model contracts in the role of an inspector.

Additional assignments included proposing new financial limits for below-threshold contracts and suggesting innovative methods for reviewing the Office’s decisions.
The students demonstrated a solid understanding of public procurement and brought fresh, unbiased insights to the process. The Office considers promoting young professionals’ interest in this field a key priority and plans to organise similar activities in the future.

April 2025 at the International Office

At the Faculty of Management Comenius University at the end of April, we welcomed colleagues from...

In April, as part of Erasmus teaching mobilities, we sent our colleagues to several countries across Europe. We had representation in Poland (Warsaw), France at the Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA), Romania at the West University of Timișoara, in Paris at ECE University, Germany at the Brandenburg University of Applied Sciences, and also at the Iriarte University College in Tenerife, Spain.
In addition to teaching mobilities, we also sent PhD students for short-term internships, as well as students together with academic staff to Blended Intensive Programmes (BIP). A larger group recently returned from a BIP held in Prague, accompanied by our colleague Holienko.
Our international activities didn’t stop in Europe – the Dean of the Faculty of Management, Comenius University, along with the Vice-Dean for International Relations, successfully represented us at education fairs in India.
We bring you short reports from some of our colleagues, which we hope will serve as motivation for your own Erasmus journeys. Follow our updates and don’t hesitate to get involved – mobility is not just for students, but also for staff and teachers!

Teaching in Tenerife – the biscuits brand Horalky

Thanks to the Erasmus+ STA mobility I had the opportunity in the first half of April to visit Iriarte University College in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, Spain. It is a smaller private university with a student population equal to our faculty. The school was initially profiled for tourism, but now offers a wide range of courses of a classical business school. Due to the attractiveness of the destination, most of the students are foreign exchange students. During my stay at the university, I had the rare opportunity to get to know the students and faculty. During lectures and tutorials, I introduced the topic of consumer behaviour to the students in the Marketing course. Using the example of the Slovak biscuit brand Horalky, I discussed with the students the possibility of expanding this brand to the local market. Students proposed evaluation criteria to compare Slovak biscuit Horalky with potential competitors on the local market. After tasting the product, the students proposed concrete recommendations for its adaptation when entering a new market. It was an interesting opportunity to meet people and get to know the unique places of this diverse island.

Short-term PhD Internship in Bosnia and Herzegovina – Ivan Skaloš

“Within the framework of the Erasmus+ mobility program for doctoral students, I had the valuable opportunity to spend two weeks at the Faculty of Economics, University of Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina — a higher education institution distinguished by its welcoming, family-like atmosphere and situated in a remarkably beautiful region of the country.
This experience enabled me to engage in meaningful academic exchange with both students and faculty members outside the European Union, within a national context still navigating complex internal challenges rooted in its difficult historical legacy.
From the perspectives of teaching, academic leadership, and personal growth, this stay proved immensely enriching. It allowed me not only to broaden my professional horizons but also to deepen my understanding of the cultural, social, and economic dynamics in a region marked by resilience and transformation.”

STA West University of Timisoara, Romania

Our colleague doc. Copuš from the Department of Management took part in an international teaching week at the West University of Timisoara, Romania, at the beginning of April, together with participants from 20 other countries. As part of his teaching activities, he contributed to the course Intercultural Management. The participants also enjoyed a rich program filled with both academic and social events. As someone beautifully put it during the week: “After a week abroad, a teacher always comes back changed – even if just a little, but always better.

India - Puna and Mumbai

The Faculty of Management, Comenius University, was represented at student fairs in Pune and Mumbai, India, by Dean Prof. Peter Štarchoň and Vice Dean for International Relations, Lucia Vilčeková. The aim of the visit was to present the faculty’s English study programs, explore opportunities for academic cooperation, and engage with prospective students from the region.

Doctoral colloquium - Vladimír Macko (5.5.2025)

Monday 5.5.2025, at 13:10 hod. v miestnosti I/9

Vladimír Macko:
Advances in Neural Network Pruning and Quantization: Theory, Practice, and Sparse Computation
Abstract:
As neural networks grow in depth and parameter count, the development of efficient compression techniques has become a central research focus in machine learning. Among these, pruning and quantization have emerged as prominent strategies to reduce model complexity and computational cost while preserving predictive accuracy. However, significant open questions remain regarding the theoretical foundations, algorithmic trade-offs, and practical implementation challenges of these methods.
This talk surveys recent progress in neural network pruning and quantization from an academic perspective, with emphasis on algorithmic innovations, formal guarantees, and empirical performance across diverse model architectures and tasks. We further examine the computational implications of sparsity induced by pruning, particularly in the context of inference-time acceleration.
In addition, we present recent work on developing custom GPU kernels for sparse matrix multiplication, highlighting how low-level optimization can align with high-level model compression objectives. Through a combination of theoretical insights and experimental evaluation, we aim to shed light on the current state and future directions of efficient neural network research.
