COMENIUS UNIVERSITY WILL CONTINUE TO HONOUR 17 NOVEMBER AS A HOLIDAY

Bratislava, 9 June 2025: The academic community perceives 17 November as an extraordinary day. The...

The announced cancellation of the day of rest on 17 November, known as the Day of the Fight for Freedom and Democracy and International Students' Day, has already drawn criticism from some student and youth organizations. Although the discussion about the economic impact of rest days is fully legitimate and the argument about the financial burden of an excessive number of such general holidays is generally acceptable, the academic community nevertheless considers 17 November to be a day whose extraordinary character deserves a specific approach. As part of a public debate, the management of Comenius University Bratislava is advocating to keep 17 November in the catalogue of public holidays as a day of rest.
“On 17 November 1939 the Nazis closed Czech universities, executed nine students, and sent more than a thousand others to concentration camps. 17 November 1989 is the day on which the process leading to the fall of the communist totalitarian regime was launched. It is the day when we began to build academic self-government. Therefore, it deserves our attention, recognition and respect across the entire society,” said Comenius University Rector Marek Števček.
"The day of 17 November goes to the very core of Comenius University. Several events of November 1989 took place in our premises, and were driven by our students. From the legendary student march of 16 November to the discussions in our Auditorium, it was the courage of young people that sparked the societal change. Because of it, we can now freely create, study, and travel. That is why I plan to declare a rector's day off on 17 November, 2025, in order to commemorate the legacy of the November events, regardless of the formal form of the holiday. I hope that Comenius University will maintain this tradition in the future, and the instances of student resistance from 1939 and 1989 will be preserved in our collective academic memory," added Števček.

FORGENOM Open Office: A New Space Connecting Science, Education, and Innovation in Biomedicine

Bratislava, [30 May 2025]
A new office is being established at the Science Park of Comenius...

Bratislava, [30 May 2025]
A new office is being established at the Science Park of Comenius University in Bratislava, aimed at connecting academic research, innovative companies, and the public in the fields of bioinformatics, genetics, and biomedicine – the FORGENOM Open Office. This initiative emerges as an outcome of the international project FORGENOM II and responds to the growing need to make scientific careers more attractive to young researchers in Slovakia.
The FORGENOM Open Office will serve as an open space for the general public, students, researchers, and professionals. It will regularly host open days, science cafés, presentations by successful researchers, discussions on current science topics, and career events designed to connect students with biomedical and bioinformatics companies and start-ups.
Special emphasis will be placed on increasing the visibility of women in science by sharing inspiring stories of female scientists. To boost interest in PhD studies and research in areas such as bioinformatics, genomics, and proteomics, activities will be carried out in collaboration with experts from the University of Milano-Bicocca (UNIMIB) and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL).
The project also includes a public communication campaign to raise interest in science and strengthen trust in its benefits. The FORGENOM Open Office also addresses the need for clear communication of current scientific findings in biomedicine and personalized medicine. These fields are increasingly important for future healthcare – for example, through the development of non-invasive diagnostic tests and targeted treatments. The goal is to support informed public decision-making and foster an environment of open dialogue between science and society.
The strategic goal of the FORGENOM II project (Fostering Excellence in Genomics and Proteomics Research at Comenius University in Bratislava) is to improve access to excellence at the Comenius University in Bratislava and enhance the research profile of the institution and its staff in genomics, bioinformatics, and proteomics. This will be achieved through targeted collaboration, mentoring, and educational activities with leading international research institutions in these fields – the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and the University of Milano-Bicocca (UNIMIB).

The first novel written in Slovak has now been translated into English

The book René mládenca príhody a skúsenosti (René, or: A Young Man’s Adventures and Experiences) by...

The English edition, titled René, or: A Young Man’s Adventures and Experiences, has been published by Liverpool University Press as part of the Oxford University Studies in the Enlightenment series. The publication was initiated by English studies specialist Dobrota Pucherová from the Institute of World Literature of SAV. “This novel is unique in that it is not only the first novel written in the Slovak language, and also the first novel written in a small language of the Habsburg Monarchy, and the first Enlightenment novel in our region,” she explains. She approached Bohemist David Short, an experienced translator from Czech, to undertake the translation, as the language Bajza used between 1783 and 1785 shares many similarities with Czech. The original is difficult for contemporary readers to understand. “Bajza created his own idiolect. As an Enlightenment thinker, he aimed to convey verified knowledge about the world to readers. For him, language was a tool for education, and the national language was a more effective medium than the Latin used previously,” explains an expert on older Slovak literature, Associate Professor Erika Brtáňová from the Department of Slovak Language, Literature and Didactics, of CU's Faculty of Education.
René, or: A Young Man’s Adventures and Experiences is a Bildungsroman, a novel genre that follows the spiritual, psychological and social development of the protagonist during adolescence or a journey through the world. At the time of writing René, Jozef Ignác Bajza was a young chaplain who was well-versed in ancient authors as well as contemporary German and French texts, which he drew on in his novel. “The significance of Bajza’s text does not lie in the originality of its subject matter, but rather in how he was able to combine diverse elements,” says Assoc. Prof. Anikó Dušíková from the Department of Hungarian Language and Literature at the Faculty of Arts of CU. She authored a study for the English edition that places the novel in the context of its time and of the literary environment of Central Europe. A similar work on the theme of world travel appeared in Hungarian at the time: Tarimenes’ Journey by György Bessenyei. “Enlightenment authors aimed to bring the wider world closer to the reader and to write in the language their audience understood best. It was a very modern decision for the period,” says Dušíková.
Only the first volume was published during Bajza’s lifetime, as the second was blocked by ecclesiastical censorship. Although the novel is now primarily associated with mandatory reading for the secondary school final exams, it lives on in a theatrical adaptation by Milan Lasica and Július Satinský. Their play Our Friend René (Náš priateľ René), written in 1980, was also banned by communist censors shortly before its premiere and could only be performed after the Velvet Revolution in 1989. Today, it is successfully staged at the Štúdio L+S Theatre by actors Lukáš Latinák and Juraj Kemka.

Doctoral colloquium - Jana Černíková (9.6.2025)

Monday 9.6.2025 at 13:10 hod., Lecture room I 9

Jana Černíková:
Computational analysis of bacterial plasmids
Abstract:
Plasmids are small, circular, extrachromosomal DNA molecules commonly found in bacteria. They can be transferred between different bacterial cells through horizontal gene transfer and often carry genes conferring antimicrobial resistance (AMR), making them a critical focus in the study of antibiotic resistance. The goal of our work is to develop new bioinformatics methods for plasmid detection and comparison, leveraging techniques from machine learning and comparative genomics.
We explore computational approaches for classifying plasmid sequences based on high-throughput sequencing data. Using k-mer profiles and various sequence-derived features, we are training machine learning models to distinguish plasmid reads from chromosomal ones.
Our dataset, consisting of multiple E. coli isolates, presents significant challenges due to class imbalance – plasmid reads are markedly underrepresented. Experimental results demonstrate that data partitioning strategies and isolate-specific differences play a substantial role in classification performance.

Seminar of Department of Theoretical Physics - Eugenia Boffo (10.6.2025)

Tuesday 29.4.2025 at 15:30, Lecture room F2/125

Eugenia Boffo (Charles University in Prague):
On Kodaira-Spencer theory

Abstract:
Topological strings have moduli that are either Kähler h1,1 or complex structure h2,1. The deformation problem of complex structures, as customary for deformation problems, consists of a Maurer-Cartan equation, in this case involving the Dolbeault differential and the Schouten bracket. Unfortunately, various issues (lack of a suitable bilinear symmetric 2-form, or use of a divergence operator in the working expression for the Schouten bracket) concur to prevent an action functional in MC form (i.e. whose field equations are the MC equations). Therefore the original proposals of an action in the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism, known as Kodaira-Spencer theory of gravity or BCOV theory, involve either a non-local kinetic term [Bershadsky-Cecotti-Ooguri-Vafa ’93] or a constrained variation [Barannikov-Kontsevich ’97]. We propose a fix to this, borrowing structures from superstring field theory. Based on a work with Hulík and Sachs to appear soon.

Representing Paths in Digraphs - Alex Popa (3.6.2025)

Tuesday 3.6.2025 at 11:00, Lecture room VIII

Alex Popa (Professor, Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Bucharest, Romania):
Representing Paths in Digraphs
Abstract:
We consider two combinatorial problems related to graph string matching, motivated by recent approaches in computational genomics. Given a DAG where each node is labeled by a symbol, the problems aim to find a path in the DAG whose nodes contain all (or the maximum number of) symbols of the alphabet. We introduce a decision problem, Σ-Representing Path, that asks whether there exists a path that contains all the symbols of the alphabet, and an optimization problem, called Maximum Representing Path, that asks for a path that contains the maximum number of symbols. We analyze the complexity of the problems, showing the NP-completeness of Σ-Representing Path when each symbol labels at most three nodes in the DAG, and showing the APX-hardness of Maximum Representing Path when each symbol labels at most two nodes in the DAG. We complement the first result by giving a polynomial-time algorithm for Σ-Representing Path when each symbol labels at most two nodes in the DAG. Then we investigate the parameterized complexity of the two problems when the DAG has a limited distance from a set of disjoint paths and we show that both problems are W[1]-hard for this parameter. We consider the approximation of Maximum Representing Path, giving an approximation algorithm of factor sqrt{OPT} , where OPT is the value of an optimal solution of the problem. We also show a hardness of approximation result for the Maximum Representing Path problem.
