Seminar of Graph Theory - Davide Mattiolo (9.10.2025)

Thursday 9.10.2025 at 9:50, Lecture room M 213

Davide Mattiolo (KU Leuven, Kortrijk, Belgium):
Pairwise disjoint perfect matchings in r-edge-connected r-graphs
Abstract:
Thomassen [Factorizing regular graphs, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 141 (2020), pp. 343–351] asked whether every r-edge-connected r-regular graph of even order has r-2 pairwise disjoint perfect matchings. We show that this is not the case when r is even.
It turns out that our methods are limited to the even case of Thomassen's problem. We discuss the odd case and relate statements on the existence of pairwise disjoint perfect matchings in 5-edge- connected 5-regular graphs to well-known conjectures on cubic graphs, such as the Fan–Raspaud conjecture, the Berge–Fulkerson conjecture, and the 5-cycle double cover conjecture.
The talk is based on joint works with Y. Ma, E. Steffen and I. H. Wolf.

Doctoral colloquium - Peter Anthony (6.10.2025)

Monday 6.10.2025 at 13:10 hod., Lecture room I 9

Peter Anthony:
Rule Extraction and Interaction-Aware Explainability for AI-Driven Malware Detection
Abstract:
As machine learning becomes integral to malware detection, the demand for interpretability has become critical, not only to understand model decisions, but also to support actionable insights for analysts. While post-hoc techniques like SHAP, LIME, and Anchor offer feature attributions or instance-level rules, they fail to capture generalised semantic patterns across malware samples. To address this, we propose a unified and extensible explainability framework for binarized malware features, offering three levels of interpretability: (1) first-order explanations (individual feature effects), (2) second-order explanations (pairwise interactions revealing nonlinear dependencies), and (3) higher-order, rule-based explanations that formalize joint feature contributions for deeper analytical insight.
Our framework builds on an MLP-based detector trained on the EMBER dataset. It first uses SHAP to assess global feature relevance and then introduces two key extensions: (i) a SHAP-based interaction formalism that reveals synergistic and antagonistic effects among features, and (ii) a generalized Anchor algorithm that extracts symbolic, reusable rules to illuminate model behavior and malware patterns. Our global rules achieve an F1 score of 83\% on EMBER and perfectly reconstructing nonlinear decision boundaries in synthetic benchmarks (100\% F1 on the XoR dataset). Analysis of EMBER’s extracted rules reveals that the black-box model’s logic often relies on structural anomalies, prioritizing statistical patterns rather than capturing meaningful behavioral patterns indicative of known malware tactics.

Study stay of Professor Anna Maria Maugeri at PraF Comenius University

On October 1, 2025, the Faculty of Law of Comenius University

In the week of 22–29 September 2025, Professor of Criminal Law Anna Maria Maugeri from the University of Catania undertook a study visit at the Faculty of Law of Comenius University in Bratislava (hereinafter “PraF UK”), primarily at the Department of Criminal Law, Criminology and Criminalistics (hereinafter “the Department”). Prof. Maugeri serves as a professore ordinario (full professor) of criminal law, and her scholarly work focuses on the fundamental principles of criminal law—including the principles of legality, proportionality, the prohibition of retroactivity, and ne bis in idem—as well as offences against the order in public affairs, prevention, and the use of protective measures.
During her visit, Prof. Maugeri delivered lectures to students and internal doctoral candidates at PraF UK on the topics “Criminal Law in Italy” “Current Challenges Related to the Case Law of the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court of Italy.” She also presented the Italian concept of combating organized crime, which has become an important basis for the Europeanization of criminal law in the area of the fight against organized crime.
While on the study visit, Prof. Maugeri held a working meeting with Prof. Čentéš, Head of the Department, in the presence of Prof. Strémy and the Department’s internal doctoral students. The meeting addressed current challenges in Italy’s criminal policy from the standpoint of legal regulation and the decision-making activity of judicial authorities. Prof. Maugeri’s lectures attracted strong interest from students and the Department’s academic staff, sparked intensive discussion, and contributed to the development of knowledge about Italian criminal law in terms of both legislation and judicial practice. They also helped establish concrete cooperation between the Department and the University of Catania.

Nuclear Seminar - Anton Repko (8.10.2025)

Wednesday 8.10.2025 at 14:00, Lecture room F1/364

RNDr. Anton Repko, Ph.D. (Department of Nuclear Physics, Institute of Physics SAS):
Calculations of low-lying excited states in atomic nuclei by Skyrme QRPA method

Abstract:
Density functionals (of Skyrme, Gogny or Relativistic Mean Field type) are commonly employed for the theoretical description of ground and excited states of nuclei. They are based on phenomenological interactions, and provide a microscopic description mainly for even-even nuclei along the whole nuclear chart, including deformation. The first step consists in the calculation of ground state by HFB (Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov) or HF+BCS, and can be followed by GCM (Generator Coordinate Method) or QRPA (Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation). My research is focused on the implementation of QRPA on top of spherical and axially-deformed ground states computed by Skyrme HF+BCS. I developed also corrections for spuriosity, which are crucial for low-lying excitations of multipolarity 1– (E1) and 0+ (E0), where we predict isoscalar vortical currents (24Mg,58Ni: 1–) and pairing vibrations (254No: 0+).

Top Award from the Literary Fund for Assoc. Prof. Tibor Macko

In the category of Technical and Mathematical Sciences, Assoc. Prof. Tibor Macko and Prof. Wolfgang...

According to the official media release: „Bratislava, September 25 (TASR) – On Thursday in Bratislava, the Scientific and Technical Literature and Computer Programs Section of the Literary Fund (LF) presented awards for the best works in the field of scientific and technical literature for 2024.”…
In the Technical and Mathematical Sciences category, Wolfgang Lück and Tibor Macko were recognized for their outstanding contribution Surgery Theory. The monograph offers a comprehensive overview of the current state of a modern branch of mathematics that also provides tools for addressing classical mathematical problems. „Its title could be translated as the "Theory of Surgery." It summarizes mathematical methods used to solve problems related to manifolds – abstract spaces resembling multidimensional surfaces," the Literary Fund noted.

The laudatory address at the award ceremony was delivered by Assoc. Prof. Tomáš Plachetka, Chair of the Jury. This exceptional publication appeared as Volume 362 in one of the world’s most prestigious mathematical series, Surgery Theory: Foundations (Grundlehren der mathematischen Wissenschaften, 362). As highlighted by Amazon: „This book has been written for learning surgery theory and includes numerous exercises. With full proofs and detailed explanations, it also provides an invaluable reference for working mathematicians. Each chapter has been designed to be largely self-contained and includes a guide to help readers navigate the material, making the book highly suitable for lecture courses, seminars, and reading courses.“ This monumental work comprises 961 pages.
A review in zbMATH (Karl Heinz Dovermann, zbMATH 1551.57001, 2025) states: "It is nice that so much about surgery is collected in one volume. The book brings together topics that are scattered over the literature, and sometimes difficult to find. Even the experienced reader may find something new. The extensive bibliography is great to have.”
We warmly congratulate Assoc. Prof. Tibor Macko on this distinguished recognition.
